Phair (sphair) Here are some more books needing covers, please:

American Costume 1840-1920

And a question- why, when I use the add book/author pop-up to add a link to a book from the comment box am I sometimes unable to pull up a book I know is in there? For example- Medieval & Tudor Costume by Cunnington (one of the titles above) did not show when I queried that title via 'add book' - only Tudor Costume and Fashion by Norris came up.

Sandra | 31498 comments Yes, Paula, I was just doing them. And sorry Sandra, I don't know the answer to your question. That's the sort of question best asked in Goodreads Feedback.

I tried it and had the same thing happen, but when I added the author's last name to the title for the search the book came up. not sure why it's happening in the first place, but here's a way to get around the problem anyway. The other possible fix I found was to put quotation marks around the title, and then the correct book comes up.

Also, I am having difficulty adding the Kindle version:

Libby, next time please link to the edition and/or provide an ISBN. (I was able to find and fix the one in question.)

There already is a Kindle edition listed.

message 110: by Libby (new)

Libby Cone | 3 comments Thanks for fixing the cover.

The Kindle edition listed is the old self-published one. This is the new one, published by Duckworth:http://www.amazon.com/War-on-the-Marg...

To clarify: does this Kindle edition replace the old one? Or do both need to be listed?

message 112: by Libby (new)

Libby Cone | 3 comments This Kindle edition does replace the old one. Thanks!

Libby

message 128: by Andy (new)

Andy | 136 comments 'lo there. I really like the ability to scroll through the cover view of my collection and see the books I own. So, I'd REALly like to help by trying to improve the quality of the images, upload the ones that don't exist, and create alternate listings for the covers that are different from the ones that are already there. I've searched and read and read and searched and looked at the properties of dozens of images, but didn't find an answer anywhere. What are the desired dimensions for images? It looks like 475 pixels high is the only thing that's close to a standard. Thanks for your help, and thanks for having me. ;-)

message 130: by Martin Lamb (new)

Martin Lamb | 11 comments Thanks, got it!

message 131: by [ JT ] (new)

[ JT ] | 51 comments Andy: with regard to cover images-- I always upload the highest quality, largest pixel-size I can find! The bigger the better. ;) Obviously, 1000 pixels tall is a bit much.... but I'd say around 500 is perfectly reasonable!

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments GoodReads automatically reduces the size of over large images so if you overshoot the max size, it's not a big deal.

message 133: by Andy (new)

Andy | 136 comments Amanda, Michael Not: Thanks for the advice. I don't know why I didn't see the updates, but... I'm a very literal (anal?) person, so I was hoping to see some "official" standards. (wry grin) After checking the properties of a couple more dozen images, 29? x 475 still seems to be the most common.

Somebody else: I'm pretty sure that Island by Aldous Huxley shouldn't have a Perry Mason cover. I'd try to edit it, but I saw someplace that there was something odd about getting rid of an existing photo. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32...

When a) it's Amazon's fault (85% of the time) and b) Amazon has not since fixed it, there's not much that can be done, unless you have the correct cover. Fortunately, while a was true, b was not. So simply deleting the cover fixed it.

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments Has anyone noticed that there seem to be a lot more "broken" image links coming from Amazon lately? I think they've changed their cover logic/storage again in some way and GoodReads hasn't quite kept up.

Yup. Again. (IIRC, Amazon changes this every year or so.)

message 138: by Andy (new)

Andy | 136 comments I've noticed something weird on several books/editions. I'll be looking at an edition detail page with an image, but when I click on the image, I get a blank page. The frame, the ad, the menu are all there, but there's no full size image. Is there something I could look for (besides the URL) to help pin down this problem, or am I the only one getting it?

message 139: by vicki_girl (new)

vicki_girl | 2764 comments I've had it happen too, but I don't have any suggestions as to the cause.

IIRC, it means that certain sizes of the image exist, but not others. (All book covers exist in three sizes, used on different views/locations.) Can you link to an example?

message 141: by Andy (new)

Andy | 136 comments rivka: That little piece of information just put a BIG grin on my face. The question, on the other hand, wiped it back off again. I finally got most of my books uploaded, so that elusive example might be a little while in coming. I'll post it as soon as I find another one.

I'm guessing that the program behind the upload for images automatically creates the appropriate size images from what we upload? I mean, I HOPE so.

Andy wrote: "I'm guessing that the program behind the upload for images automatically creates the appropriate size images from what we upload?"

Absolutely. However, sometimes the image(s) get corrupted (or something), and many times that affects only some of the sizes, which results in the oddness you noticed. (IIRC)

message 143: by Andy (new)

Andy | 136 comments rivka: This one of the ones that I was talking about; I just found it a couple seconds ago. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12...

This is where I saw the three pictures you were talking about before, right? ;-)
http://www.goodreads.com/book/edit_ph...

There's really nothing we can do about this, is there? I mean aside from uploading new scans if/when we can find them.

message 144: by Andy (new)

Andy | 136 comments Here's another one. Looks like the system thinks there's an image there, someplace. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/14...

Amazon has a ... crummy image. Would just deleting the "existing" one do anything useful? No way the new kid on the block is gonna experiment. ;-)

Andy wrote: "There's really nothing we can do about this, is there? I mean aside from uploading new scans if/when we can find them."

If the image is hosted on Amazon (which I check by looking at the Amazon link), then deleting the image (or refreshing via the refresh link, if the image already shows as being from Amazon) will refresh all three versions of the image. If not, I save the largest available image, delete what's there, and re-upload what I saved. (Assuming B&N or another source doesn't have a good full-size image.)

Your first example was hosted by Amazon, so I deleted. Now it's properly hosted by Amazon, and showing properly. I did the same thing with the second example. However, you might wish to download the image, crop the black space, and upload.

message 146: by Andy (new)

Andy | 136 comments Here's two with broken links to Amazon:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/62...
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/63...

The only refresh link I saw (Refresh book data from Amazon) seemed like it would replace ALL data that was coming from Amazon. Did I miss something? Looking at them again, I guess that's the only option since there is no [Delete:] button. Still, I'll err on the side of caution and kick it back to the professionals.

message 147: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
Refresh & override replaces all data; the plain refresh fills in empty fields and fixes things like broken images.

I got the first one. Why don't you try the second.

message 148: by Andy (new)

Andy | 136 comments Sorry for being a pain, but I don't want to inadvertently undo someone else's work. Maybe we could get a tool tip explaining what the links do? hmmm... Maybe that's not possible. The tool tips for the fields don't show up until you click into them.

Thanks rivka. I promise, given time, I'll come up with bigger and better questions.
