Or - in honour of Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street - read a children's book (not necessarily young adult)!

LOL I think most of Diana Palmer's books would fit this category. Maybe throw some Catherine Coulter historicals in it too. Should actually fit any alpha jerk hero book. :)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Just putting this out there-I didn't read the whole thread to know if it was suggested or not.

But how about a series related tournament? Pts could be based on how many of a certain series you read, the # of the book in the series, finishing dead series etc..,

Just an idea becuase I really need some sort of series related challenge. I've got too many going.

Hi Mary!
Here is a thread to a series challenge that gives you a year from your start date to finish. It really helped me go through my tbr list. I hope this helps!

message 1157: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I looked at that but I don't want to have to read specific categories like New To Me Author and Chick-lit.

I'm looking to finish up series I've already started. I joined another one that's more basic.

I found a lot of series related challenges in various groups. But I don't want to read based on words in the title, the book cover etcc..., Those challenges keep increasing my TBR instead of reducing it :-)

message 1158: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Mary - a lot of ppl use the annual 'Create Your Own Challenge' to finish off their series... DG took the whole idea to another level with a very detailed point system, probably along the line of what you are thinking...

Have a look at DG's posts and points.

But the idea has legs - maybe PM Yz... It would probably work best as an annual challenge, but maybe it could be broken down into 4 quarters with each quarter addressing a different romance stream or series...

No probs Lacy - It's in the Yearly Challenge segment. Only DG did the point system... My challenge was simply to read 20 books that had been on my TBR list for ages... (I didn't want to over-commit!!) You basically just make up a challenge to satisfy your own needs! :)

message 1161: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i know last december rossy all did a series clean-up challenge, where the goal was to get caught up on those various series. I want to say it was in the dare you to read section. The only requirement was that when you were done, you had to say how did it add to the series and will you continue the series (or something like that)

message 1162: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I joined a series challenge in the Nothing But Reading Challenges group. I forget what it's called but it's pretty loose. Most of the other ones involve catagories that I'd have to acquire a book somewhere for and I want to use books I already own.

I just can't keep acquiring books to fit a challenge catagory I don't have anymore. The TBR of owned books is out of control.

I will see what challenges start in 2012. Maybe there will be something that fits my needs.

message 1163: by Lacy (new)

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 1966 comments I really like this 'Create your own Challenge' challenge. Does anyone know if this will be done next year?

message 1164: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I suspect so, as I'm pretty sure it was also done in 2010...

message 1165: by Lacy (new)

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 1966 comments Thanks, Jane.

It is too late in the year for me to start one, but next year I'm going to do one like yours. I need to stop buying books and start reading the ones that I have!

message 1166: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I'm pretty sure I'm be doing some sort of repeat of my 2011 challenge, but maybe with a theme of some sort... We'll see what inspires me when I go through my piles of books!!!

message 1167: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments I'm scared to go through my piles of book. I sometimes actually get a little bit depressed after. Mainly, it's the inability(!!) to decide what I'm going to read next.

message 1168: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments LOL - too many treats to choose from, Vi??!! You should be squirming around in excitement ;)

message 1169: by Lacy (last edited Oct 03, 2011 09:22AM) (new)

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 1966 comments I'm going to try to come up with a theme too. We will see. I get excited as I go through them to make the list. Then, halfway through reading the books on the list I am getting sick of following it!

Short and sweet is my solution! I only committed to read 12 books initially - then upgraded to 20 books when I knocked off a few quite quickly. We have a whole year, so I figured that 1-2/mth was achievable :)

message 1171: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments Oh yeah, it's like a sugar high. I see so many books and I get excited. Then when it keeps on coming, I.. don't know what to do. It takes a while for my high to come to normal. :P

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 1966 comments I don't know if I'm allowed to do this, so let me know if I step on any toes! I'm bored and can't sleep, so I thought I would start the November discussion.

In the United States, it has recently become known as No-Shave November or Noshember[3] with growing participation from men and women alike to raise awareness of a variety of charities, and men's health issues, mainly testicular and prostate cancer.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Since this is ostensibly a romance reading group, I think we need a romance and love based challenge. I'm thinking I might have a month long challenge idea. It has to do with the morphology and life cycle of a relationship. It would be an 8 - 12 book challenge and could be extended to a quarterly easily. I'm seeing the relationship being divided into three categories and at least a dozen sub-categories.

The Beginning:
-instant attraction
-blind date
-friends first

The Middle:
-marriage
-children
-career
-home

The End:
-loss
-widow/widower
-divorce

This is just a very rough outline and I have some ideas on rules and more categories but want to see if there is any interest before I put it together.

message 1180: by Penney (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments Oooooo! I like that idea Jim! Could you make it a quarterly challenge?

message 1181: by Lacy (new)

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 1966 comments Jim, this sounds promising. I would be interested in reading more about it!

message 1182: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments Me too! I like the idea. I'm in whenever the challenge comes up.

message 1183: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Yeah Jim! I like it! But I think I would want TIME to read a book for each category as inevitably, many of the books I read tend to be quite similar (especially if I hook myself on a theme, as I am at the moment ;). And I hardly ever read books in some of your outlined categories... (depending on how you word the requirements) Would I be a complete pooh-bar if I requested it was a 6 month challenge?

message 1184: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (last edited Oct 25, 2011 07:19PM) (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Love the idea, Jim.

I'm with Jane on a longer time-period, six months sound good.

The group is in the market for a challenge that has a specified time-period instead of a specific end date. Meaning its going to be an ongoing challenge, like the Romance 101 and the Serial Reader Challenge, and anyone can participate anytime as long as they complete it within the time period.

Would you be interested in developing your idea further? It would be fun to have it for the group. :)

On that same note, I'm on the look-out for a good series-based challenge. We have our ongoing Serial-Reader Challenge, but I have received several requests for more.

If you have an idea, please post it here or send me a pm. :)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Yz, I'll develop the idea and see about putting it out there this weekend. Six months definitely seems too long for me but how does 120 days sound? If it is a full 12 books for the challenge that's one every week and a half. Since those books will overlap with other challenges, this should be eminently doable by many.

I'm cool with your chosen time frame.

Looking forward to the challenge. : )

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Yz, I got way busy this weekend and I'm starting a new job today so I didn't have a chance to put it together yet. But I will put it up sometime this week.

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments haha, that is all it said too, I was wondering the same.
What is with all the food for the month of December, jeez

I am thinking we could read a childrens book for the Barbie and Barney Backlash Day.

put on your own shoes - aiy aiy aiy, anybody have any other options for December ??

message 1198: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments OK, I didn't get notification for this thread.

Hm, for all the food related stuff - maybe we can have a category with food on the cover or character is a chef or the book is centered around food. (Ex: Like Water for Chocolate)

Civil Aviation Day - one of the lead character is a pilot or involved in air crash

Letter Writing Day - a book where there are letters written by the lead characters to anyone or use sticky notes/email or a book where traditional narration is not present (nice idea but will be very tough to find books - I have one YA series that fit)

That was some of the more absurd ideas that come into my mind right now. I'll post some again later

PS: I really want to use the Whiner's day somehow but I don't know how. I don't think anyone will read a lead character who is a whiner! :P

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments Looking for a volunteer!

The person who was supposed to host our Pick It for Me for December had an emergency, and will not be able to do it. If one of you is familiar with the rules of the challenge, and would like to host it. Also if you have a good idea for a "christmas theme", for the pairing, that would be the cherry on top!

Please send me a PM if interested!

Courtney K (cklueh) | 510 comments A to Z: Super Series Challenge
Duration: January 1st 2012 to December 31st 2012

Read 1 book for each letter of the alphabet from a series beginning with that letter. You may read any number from the series. If you are in the middle of the series, read the next book. If you haven't started one yet, read the first. If a new book is coming out this year, read it.

There are a couple of levels to this challenge.

Citizen: Read 1 book for each letter/series. 26 total.

Sidekick: Read 2 books from each letter/series. 52 total.

Superhero: Read the whole series. If you've already started a series, that counts. You do not have to go back and re-read the beginning. You need to finish the series from whatever point you started at through this year. Totals will vary.

Supervillain: Just read the last book from each series. You get extra villainy points if you haven't read any previous books in the series. You are so BAD!!! 26 total.

What do you think? Would this fit under the Yearly Challenge category?
