Joanne | 195 comments A couple of other ideas:

National Wear Red Day (Heart Awareness Day) - Book with red cover.

February is also Black History Month (or African-American History Month) in the US and National Bird-Feeding Month.

message 802: by Kami (new)

Kami (aidansmama) | 988 comments February has Valentine's Day, so something associated with Valentine's Day: the color red, flowers, hearts?

Maybe some kind of challenge that has to do with those sayings on those conversation heart candies? "Be Mine", "Kiss Me", "Call Me", and "Miss You"

Wikipedia has this to say: February is the second month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. It is the shortest month and the only month with less than 30 days. February was named after the Latin term februum, which means purification, via the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 in the old Roman calendar. Having only 28 days in common years, it is the only month of the year that can pass without a single full moon. Its birth flower is the Viola (plant) and the Primrose. Its birthstone is the amethyst. It symbolizes piety, humility, spiritual wisdom, and sincerity.

message 803: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Ok - back to on my zodiac theme. Aquarius is predominantly in February. How about a book which is set next to the ocean or a lake, or involves travel over a large body of water? ...Or we could make it really easy and read a book where a character has a shower or bath (*joke*)...

Hmmm - makes Picses hard 'cos fishing would also need the large body of water requirement...

Perhaps we just use the zodiac selectively if required...

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Second month, second chances? A book that has H/H that have are going through a second chance or are on a second marriage.

Black history month - a book with a black h/h or author.

Groundhog Day - a book with fortune teller or psychic or animal totems

Charles Dickens Day - a book by Dickens or inspired by Dickens

Mardi Gras - A book with or about a big party or celebration

And perhaps most importantly....

Jim's birthday - a book with a character named Jim, someone with a significant birthday in the book, a photographer, or a middle aged guy would all work for this one. (yeah, I'm mostly kidding about this one)

message 805: by Kami (last edited Dec 31, 2010 12:24AM) (new)

Kami (aidansmama) | 988 comments Oh yeah Mardi Gras. Maybe some kind of challenge that could reflect the different parades: the Zulu parade and the Rex parade. Except Mardi Gras actually falls on March 8th this year. It's in February again in 2012.

message 806: by Kami (new)

Kami (aidansmama) | 988 comments Since groundhog day is February 2nd, 2/2, maybe something with "two" in the title? The next leap year is 2012 in case anyone was curious. So there will be 28 days in February.

Short books (less than 300 pgs.) as Feb. is the shortest month.

I like the second book in a series idea.

message 808: by Michelle (new)

Michelle K (anotherlookbook) Thank you for all the hard work you put into these challenges. I love to get the updates on my feed.

Just curious if you have (and sorry if I missed it) but do you have a challenge "Read a Debut Author" or "Read a New Author" challenge? I think it would be cool to give a brand new author the exposure. BTW I am not an author so I am not pimping myself.

message 809: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments @ Michelle...we had in this past month read a new to you author and read a first book in a series...but its sort of up to us if it was someone more established (for example, I read Georgette Heyer for my one because i'd never read her before)...

we used to have a spend the week with an author, but I don't know what happened to it...where we could ask authors various questions through-out the week

Katharina | 802 comments Kami wrote: "Its birth flower is the Viola (plant)"
I like this. Read a book with the color violet on part of cover. Would also fit birthstone amethyst.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's Birthday: Read a book that takes place during the pioneer days.

Love your pet day: Read a book with an animal on the cover or has an animal featured in the book.

Get a different name day: Read a book where one of the characters has a hidden identity.

Valentines day: read a book with a title or author's name (first or last) that starts with V.

Or maybe a book with violet, purple, lilac or amethyst in the title? We could read The Color Purple for instance. Other titles I found: The Purple Emperor (Faerie Wars #2)by Herbie Brennan, Violet & Claire by Francesca Lia Block, Through Violet Eyes (Violet Eyes, #1)by Stephen Woodworth, Amethyst by Lauren Royal, Amethyst Bound by L. Shannon, Amethyst by Kathryn Quick, Amethyst
by Joshua Dagon. (Who knew there were so many books titled Amethyst?)

message 812: by Katharina (new)

Katharina | 802 comments There are also authors with the name Violet ie. Violet Winspear.

message 813: by Kami (new)

Kami (aidansmama) | 988 comments Bleeding Violet (Portero #1) by Dia Reeves. Ultraviolet (Jane Kelly #3)by Nancy Bush. Violet Fire (Bragg Saga #3)by Brenda Joyce. There is an author named Silvia Violet.

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments Question Yz... Will the "Read The Month" challenges be italian all year or are you going to change the language every month?

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Penney wrote: "Question Yz... Will the "Read The Month" challenges be italian all year or are you going to change the language every month?"

I think we are going to keep it in one language all-year long.

message 816: by Penney (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments Fun! Thanks Yz :)

message 817: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 1058 comments I had a question: For January we had read a first book in series or debut novel. For February we had read a second in series or two-word title. Do I see a trend forming? Is it possible we can continue in this fashion? Just wondering because I need a lot of pre-planning for December. LOL.

Thanks for all your hard work Yz!

LOL.... Do you want the trend to continue? Wouldn't it be too hard to find a book that is 12th in a series or a book with a 12-word title?

message 819: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Open for suggestions for March categories!

message 820: by Penney (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments There's always a book set in Ireland or with an Irish character, green cover etc...

message 821: by Daffodil (new)

:D Pretty sure you're right. It might be fun 'til about July or August, but then it would get progressively harder.

message 822: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments when we get to the higher months...maybe letters in the title or letters in the authors name...could be an interesting twist...I don't think i'm involved in too many series that have up to 12 books...that i'm not already into

message 823: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Reread DDee! (Nice syncopation!)

Well, JD Robb has has the series covered to book 31 (or something ridiculous), along with Christine Feehan (Carpathians) and Laurell Hamilton (Anita Blake). The Arcane Society series by Jayne Ann Krentz and her many other names, and Nalini Singh (Psy) and Kresley Cole (IAD) must be getting up there too. But we could let ppl opt out along DDee lines after June? or open the category up to authors who have published more than 7 titles (eg for July). Sarah MacLean is helping everyone out with some long titles too!

message 824: by Dee (last edited Jan 27, 2011 04:20PM) (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments too many books too little time to re-read...lol! unless its a totally awesome book...I know I had to find a 7 word title one for a challenge adn it was harder than I thought

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments We all know the March Hare was mad. Perhaps a book with mental illness or perhaps just heavy drug use or maybe even tea parties.

People march off to war. Something with marching - armies or that sort of thing. "This one time at band camp..."

The vernal or autumnal equinox (depending on location) occurs in March. Something with druids, astrology, or early religious practices would be an interesting category.

How about something with a puppy on the cover? Not because it has anything to do with puppies, but because people like dogs.

message 826: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Because it is 'love your dog month' Jim? Actually, dog backwards - god (employing the March hare madmess)... Either a dog book, christian romance ('cos SO many ppl seem to be falling over backwards to read one! not!) or one of the books with gods in them - there are only a hundred oe so in the PNR genre with Sherrilyn Kenyon etc...

Sorry - I know this post was not at all helpful!! :)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Jane, did you hear about the agnostic dyslexic insomniac? They stayed up all night wondering if there really was a dog.

message 828: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments LOL, Jim! I've heard that one.

I like Jane's idea! I have a Hitchens book to read before April so it work out well for me.

message 829: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Hahaha Jim - I think I've heard it too, but I'm hopeless with jokes (and nursery rhymes) so I always enjoy them a second time around. (Hope I haven't got Alzheimers!)

Nice light reading DG! I was thinking of you and your comments (and DDee's) from the 101 Romance challenge!

message 830: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Jane (PS) wrote: "Nice light reading DG!"

LOL, Jane. I've heard that Hitchens is a bit strident so I'm not sure how much I'd like the book even if I'm sympathetic to his views. :)

message 831: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I haven't read him, but the first title that popped up alone was enough to work out the jist of the book :)

message 832: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1287 comments March is the month of that wonderful ritual called Spring Break. Some prefer a ski trip during this time, but here in snowy Minneapolis I am dreaming of sun, sand and surf. One of the categories could be Beach Read: Read a book with a beach setting; read a book set in a hot climate; read a book set during the summer; read something light/fluffy/brain candy. :-)

message 833: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments I have a few - To start with it is the month with some interesting bithdays,
Dr.Suess - read a funny book
Prince Edward - read a book with royalty in it
Fabio - read a book with one of those cheesey Fabio-type cover
Louis L'Amour - read a western romance

message 834: by Kim (new)

Kim (catmommie) March 15th - the Ides of March. A book about bad luck, Julius Ceaser (non-fiction or historical fiction), or Shakespeare?

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 561 comments The Royalty theme might be better for April (Prince Williams wedding).

message 836: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments such a good point about the royalty thing, I forgot about that.

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments April 29th, don't know how I forgot since it is my b-day also. lol :)

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 561 comments I only remember because it's around Easter!! It's been so long since we had a real Royal Wedding in the UK. I like William, he deserves to be happy.

message 840: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments Glad you like him Charlotte, he always comes across as a nice guy. Glad to hear he is a nice guy and I'll be watching the big event, just like his mothers.

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 561 comments He reminds me of his mother so much.

message 842: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments yeah he does...he's like 6 weeks younger than me - a little girls childhood dreaming marrying a prince - Kate suits him

message 843: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Geez Dee! You are making me feel my age!

message 844: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellelisa) | 65 comments OK don't know if anyone suggested it already but how about a royalty theme in April in honor of the royal wedding of William and Kate.It could be a bio, romance novel or something involving King Henry 8th seeing how 400 years ago he ascended the throne.Just a thought.

March 3rd is National Anthem Day- a book with star-crossed lovers or stars on the cover or a flag on the cover

March 8th is Fat Tuesday- a book set in New Orleans/Louisiana or a book with a "fat" character (I'm partial to the "Size 12 is not Fat" series) or a Mardi Gras book or a book with costumes or costume party or with a mask on the cover

March 12th is Girl Scout Day- a book with a baker or setting as a bakery (cookies--YUM)

March 14th is Albert Einstein's Birthday- a book with a sexy scientist or a book with a hairstylist (he needed some help with his hair, LOL) or set in a beauty shop

March 21st is World Poetry Day- a book with a title from a poem or a title that rhymes

March 30th is Doctor's Day- a book with a hospital in it or a Dr. McDreamy character

If anyone has other suggestions for the same days, please shout them out!
