Great Middle Grade Reads discussion

NEW MEMBERS: Hi everyone, I've joined the GMGR group. I'm ......
Hi everybody! My name is Sophie, I am 13, and I like to read Sharon Creech books. I am a teachers kid and middle school books are just about the only books I will read
(mostly because I am in middle school myself)so i was more than overjoyed to find a group like this.
Hey all!
Just wanted to say this group seems most welcoming and blissfully free of negativity. Like everyone else here I love MG books even though I haven't been in the middle grades for . . . wow, longer than I realized. I've read Rowling and Clare and--I reluctantly admit--Meyer, but I have to say, Barrie's Peter Pan is the best. It's a children's book, sure, but definitely also MG.

Hi Scotty, glad you picked up on our 'freedom from negativity'. We're a friendly and relaxed bunch. Our Group Rules of Respect. Tolerance. Good vibes. Support. Poignant, sparkling, and witty conversations about middle grade books seem to have found a good balance.

Though there are long periods when I don't feel sparkling or witty, forcing me to go sit quietly in the back of the room :)

Hi everyone,My name is Bronwen Webb. I'm from Adelaide, South Australia, and I'm the author of The Legend of Wild Horse Beach.
I'm pleased to join this Goodreads group -it looks like it will be a great resource.
Hello all! My name is Scott and I've got two boys, 8 and 10, who both love to read. What better way to share in their experience than to read the books with them. I love discussing what they found interesting/scary/exciting and going to the library to pick out our next book.
As a teacher, mother, grandmother, and children's book author, I'm so glad to hear that you love to read books with your kids. I was saddened when I asked my fourth grade class how often their parents took them to the public library, and several stated they had never been there! My hats off to all parents who read with their children. K.L. Pickett

Will look forward to hearing about the books you've been reading on the threads here at GMGR.
Hi! My name is Bana and, while I made a Goodreads account about a year ago, I recently got more into it. Since I love children and middle school books I thought this would be a nice group to follow and hopefully participate in.

We have a great group here, glad you can join us.
Just wrapped up Blood Diaries: Tales of a 6th-Grade Vampire, a book my 10 year-old just finished. Cute book, quick read for me. I'm looking forward to discussing it with him tomorrow. :)

I think you'll find a lot of great recommendations on the threads -- check out the LIBRARY folder for Sci Fi recommendations.
Hi Everyone! My name is Darya and I'm a motivational speaker and self-defense teacher in middle school. My life is about stories: I live, breathe and love stories, especially kidlit, which I've never stopped reading and which I believe can change lives for kids and adults alike. I thought this would be a great group to follow as I'd love to connect with people who are passionate about children's literature. Cheers!
Hello everyone. I am an indie author/blogger and in virtual world I'm known by my penname JUScribe (love my aliases) but for those that know me personally I go by Joe or Joseph. I may be one of the youngest ones here being a recent college graduate in my 20s although I'm still a kid at heart. I personally enjoy YA and middle grade books, with a recently published book out for the middle grade audience. Books I read back in middle school like The Giver are what inspired me to write with adolescents in mind and all those that are young at heart.

Hi J.U., It's a great thing to be a kid at heart. It's a time where we have great memories that are good to relive from time to time (away from the pressures of being grown up). I hope you connect with plenty of like minded kids-at-heart in the group.

Hi Darya! Hi! J.U.!Glad you've found us and hope you find a great community of people who are as passionate about children's literature as you are : )
I just wanted to say "Hi" to everyone who has joined since I last posted, which was far too long ago. I do read all the posts daily, since I get the digest from Goodreads in my email, but haven't been around posting for a bit. Sorry and all that - now back to either reading or writing ;)
Hi, I'm from Lawrence, KS and am happy to discover this group! I loved middle grade novels when I was in the middle grades and never got over it. I am especially interested in discovering great books with spunky, creative, independent female protagonists. I am also just starting to write creatively again, something I enjoyed tremendously as a child. I hope to one day write and publish fiction and/or creative non-fiction for this age group. As a recovering academic I have years of practice writing for that audience. So I know I will need lots of practice writing, as well as reading excellent examples from the middle grade genre, to undo the damage!
Hi Kristine,I fell in love with middle-grade novels in school, too, and like you, never got over it. That's why I write for the middle-grade reader (I also teach 4th grade). Good luck with your writing. Middle-grade rocks!
Hi to all the new people.I grew out of middle grade novels when I was about 13, 14, but I guess I grew back into them in the last 2-3 years. I think it also helps that there's a lot more to read now than when I was a kid.... C. Alexander London, Megan McDonald, John Connolly, Brandon Mull. Kids books were pretty good when I was growing up(I have fond memories of Dear America and American Girl), but now there's a lot more variety, from historical fiction to contemporary fiction to child entrepreneurs who make cupcakes.
Hi, I'm Betsy Haynes, and I've just published my 81st book, mostly traditional but new to ebooks. I love that there is a place for us mg writers to get to know each other. I've pubbed contemporary girls' stories, mysteries, paranormal, fantasy and historical fiction. My first novel, historical fiction, was just republished on Kindle and Create Space to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act on July 2, 1964.

Welcome, all! Yeah, we've been a little slow this month (I was out of the country, so I wasn't helping!), but I'm looking forward to more discussions as school starts up. My teens start on August 12, so I'm already looking at the end of summer (and about time I got back to writing!).

Hi! I just joined and look forward to being a part of the group. I love middle grade fiction (more than adult fiction honestly). Maybe because I never grew up...or maybe just because I find the simple honesty of a good children's book refreshing. I am a writer (mostly YA, children's and nonfiction) and artist myself as well.
Hello! I just joined this group a week or so ago and hadn't taken the time to introduce myself yet. I have two middle-grade readers: a third grader (girl) and a 7th grader (boy). I also enjoy reading many middle grade books myself. I am currently reading "The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963" which is great.
Can't wait to get in on some discussions and find some great books for my family to read.
Hi Maranda and Ruth! Welcome to the group. You'll find lots of great recommendations here. I suggest jumping into our monthly group reads, too. Happily, those discussions stay open for six months, so people like me who often fall behind can still participate.
Hi everyone!I have an 11-year-old son who loves middle-grade nonfiction and likes middle-grade fiction. Watching him read and occasionally picking up his books reminded me how much I thoroughly enjoyed reading when I was his age, begging my parents to take me to the library and waiting for the bookmobile to come to our house. Now, I write middle-grade nonfiction (four-book deal), and I'm curious to see what everyone is recommending for my son to read and to see what else is out there.
Looking forward to checking out (and reading) all your favorites!
Hi John! We have some great threads going right now on things like books for boys, so come on in and root around.
Well, The Toki-Girl and the Sparrow-Boy, of course. MG readers are at an age when the sexes don't naturally mix all that well, I think. It is hard to write for this age group and include protagonists who will appeal to both boys and girls. I don't want to write specifically for girls or boys, partially because I am writing in a past period, and I want to show all sides of a largely sex-segregated society. It will be interesting to see if the reader base will trend one way or the other over time. What differentiates "girls'" fiction from "boys'" fiction besides the sex of the protagonist? Does writing for one sex or the other take us in directions we might not want to go?
Hi Everyone! So glad to have found you all and I can't wait to "meet" you all. I am a new (squee!) middle grade author. I love to read...well, anything with words on it and I love writing children's books and bringing out a piece of my youthful self and throwing it on the page.

Hello, I agree that it's nice to find a middle grade fiction group. I've self-published two books in my Katie Marie Series, editing the third and fourth. I write simple stories about borders and boundaries in the spiritual realm. I look forward to reading posts about your work.Thank you.
Kind regards,

Hi Everyone! I am a PreK - Grade 6 school librarian from Nebraska. I found goodreads several years ago and refer to it often when considering books for my school (& personal) library. I just happened upon this group because one of my "friends" commented and I followed the trail. I am very excited about the group because it can be a tricky age to buy for and because I have read a lot of these books and now I'll finally have someone to talk to them about... outside of 4th, 5th & 6th graders.
