Also, Task 25.3 - The most popular edition is 734 pages, which is what we count, so the bonus is 6 points

Christina - Message 164 - Bonus points are applied per book, so in order for the graphic novels to be eligible, they would have to be at least 200 pages each, not combined. As they are less than 200 pages each, the page bonus isn't counted. But you get 5 points for reviewing each book, so your total is 20 points, not 17 in the end. (10 for the task, and 5 each review)

Task 100.1 (3/3 finished)

Ready to claim points:

The Last Queen by C.W. Gortner Set on the continent of Europe, in Spain and Belgium. I chose this because I knew almost nothing about Spanish royal history. I learned that Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's first wife, had a sister who is the main character of the book.

Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood set on the continent of North America in the country of Canada. I chose this book because I've read no HF set in mid 19th century Canada that I can recall. I was unaware of Canada's discontent with the US just before the Civil War, if the author's portrayal of attitudes is accurate.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments 25.4 Read 2 HF books one set in a country you lived or visited and one you never visited-

Book 1 Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir by Alison Weir

This book takes place in England where I visited in 1998.

Bonus +4 (416)
HF +1
Review +5

This is my first Alison Weir book I have read. I have read other books about this time period. I liked how the author blended fact with fiction. I found I was sympathic to both Jane Grey and Mary Tudor. I usually don't like Mary Tudor. I felt Jane was a victim of circumstance and her parents ambitions and because of this, she lost her life. I found her mother to be unusually strict even for the time period. Jane had too many expectations put on her. She never wanted the responsibility of Queen. It is a sad end to a young girl's life. We will never know what Jane could have truly accomplished.

Book 2
Briar Rose by Jane Yolen by Jane Yolen

Part of this book takes place in Poland which I have never visited.

Bonus +2 (239pp)
HF +1
Review +5

I read this book for another challenge. I thought it was going to be a retelling of Sleeping Beauty and it is in a way about that. It is a story told about one woman's experiences of the Holocaust in Poland during 1942-1944.
Becca always heard the story of Sleeping Beauty when she was growing up but always thought it was just a story until her grandmother died. On a deathbed promise, Becca finds out the history of her family and what happened to her grandmother before she came to America. The story is heartwarming but has the sinister aspect of World War II underneath. It is worth the read.
