I hate Umbridge more than Voldemort

When reading Umbridge parts my kinda skin curled and i wanted to scream every time she appeared. Voldy never made me physically hate him and want him dead. He was bad and horrible and stuff... but after HBP i understood his character a bit more. I actually felt sorry for him. I dunno. What's your opinion?

Put Umbridge in a locked room with Bellatrix Lestrange and watch the fun begin.

I hated, loathed and despised Umbridge. Period. Every time she reared her ugly head I wanted to reach through the page and strangle her. She was downright mean to the kids at school except for those in Slytherin. What she did to Harry increased how much I didn't care for her. I think she was the single villain who made me feel this intense.

I think Umbridge was JKR's view of those who advocate censoring her books because they're "too dark" for kids.

OMG Umbridge has issues she is soooooooooooo mean and i just hate her. Voldemort is bad and evil but he is not in my opinion really that bad.Umbridge could be the new and unimproved Voldemort.I wish somebody but a really nasty spell on her.

I actually don't think that Umbridge was this clever well developed villain. I think Umbridge was a stereotype, a hosh posh of the meanest things that Rowling could think of. Because of that, she had no depth or substance apart from her evil acts. Voldemort on the other hand was well developed, with a fascinating back story and a higher principle born of philosophy, theory and circumstance. In other words, we hate Umbridge more because we weren't given much else to go on other than hate. Just my opinion.

I think the reason for this is really because Umbridge was ultimately more "involved" with the novels than Voldemort.

Voldemort might have been the big baddie, but he was always ephemeral and off screen using other characters as catpaws. Umbridge was there in your face and rather than being subtle, her dark deeds were far more evident and tangible than Voldemort's.

I hated them equally. Along with Bellatrix.

Um..well I actually HATED reading OOTP because of Umbridge.. and now she's back in Deathly Hallows?? God I hate that woman! I would love to lock her in a room with Voldemort and say "have fun" and coodos to the person that said Umbridge and Bellatrix should be locked in a room together because personally I get the feeling Bellatrix would win and in this case I support Bellatrix (even though I hate all of the death eaters)

I really didn't mind Umbridge that much...

...said no one.

...No one currently alive, at any rate.

Definitely.
I don't really hate Voldemort at all. I rather pity him, instead, for he is simply physically incapable of experiencing love, due to him being conceived under the effects of a love potion.

Umbridge, on the other hand, is simply detestable.

Umbridge is very corrupt. I mean in the movie she was going to perform an unforgivable curse on Harry to get him to talk. I can't remember if that actually happened in the book, but still. That puts her on the same level as Voldemort. I will also never get over the ink and the pen she used to punish children. Using their blood? This woman is cruel. I hated her and probably even more than Voldemort.

I think NOBODY doesn't HATE Umbridge. But she's terrific as a villain! >_<

Umbridge reminds me of people who want to be "big wigs". They hang around with or work for"important" people and it makes them feel "important", and they act like they're "important". Then it's their turn to be the "important" person , and they just look a damn fool. During it all though they think they are just the cat's meow. When really deep down they're shallow, hateful, a nobody, and a just all around bad person. There are people like Umbridge in everyday walks of life. Most of the time talking too loudly on a cell phone, wanting everybody to hear his/her side of the conversation; so we can see how important they are. Ha!

umbridge is the worst person in the whole series! i hate to say that the person who killed harry's parents isnt my least fav person.

Agree!
I HATE HER!
I love Voldemort as a character, there's so much more to him than his evil image. Umbridge is just.. a fucking bitch (pardon my language!) reading her parts in the book, I can't relate or feel sorry for her the same way I feel when reading Voldemorts parts. Maybe it's because we never get her story like we get Voldemorts?? Anyway, whatever it is, i can't take her..

Your right that woman is so so evil!!!

I think the main difference between both of them is that Voldemort knows he is evil, and he does't pretend to be anything else. He doesn't lie to himself. He's got style xD. I mean, if you're going to be bad... don't wear a pink dress.

This is a funny topic. I agree. Oddly my husband and I were actually talking about this the other day. Who is actually a worse villain: Voldemort who is obviously evil, honestly evil and doesn't pretend he's not OR Umbridge who pretends to be good. She basically uses the law to be legal about her discrimination and torture of people.

Obviously Voldemort is evil, he's a bad guy. I don't like him. BUT It strikes me as a more serious offense to know that what you are doing is wrong, to pretend you are doing the wrong thing for the right reason and to be using a political system to get your way. ...

Hats off to Rowling for creating such a perfect villain. Her character is quite complex and vile.

Voldemort is much worse. The difference is that Voldemort is the fun villain. Darth Vader or Ming the Merciless are fun villains. They are fun in fiction, but are the stuff of nightmares in reality. Umbridge isn't fun. She's just mean. In real life, there are true monsters like Hitler and Pol Pot. But they tend to be distant. It's the mundane meanness of an Umbridge that is the most direct threat most of us, because it is something we might well actually experience.

I'm glad people understand.

Umbridge was terrible. I hate her. I hate her so much. I want to punish her. I want to make her write the words "I am an evil pink toad" in her hand for "as long as it takes for the message to sink in." Just leave. I wish the centaurs had never returned her to see daylight. If I didn't know that she isn't, I could easily see her as a descendant of Slytherin evil enough to wear the stupid locket.

What's infuriating about Umbridge is that she is right at the top of the Ministry, pretending to be "righteous." Voldemort is honest about his intentions, however crazy he may be, so it's almost easier to deal with. Also, as a future teacher, it pisses me off to no end to see a teacher abusing her students so much.

I hate umbridge because she acted all kind and loving and didn't show her cruelness.

Umbridge is a wicked evil woman , and so is voldmort

Actually Umbridge is the only character I hate.

AGREED A MILLION TIMES!!!! i want to skin umbrige dip her in honey then put her in a pit full of fire ants, than light he put on fire, (pulling out the ant's before of course no innocent lives should be hurt in this process)

I feel like Umbridge represented someone that we've all had experience with in our lives. Like, someone doesn't have to look mean and ugly to be evil there are other characteristics that make them so too. We could have all had a person in our life who was horrible but when other people see them they think they're the nicest person ever. It just depends on how they treat you and how they treat others.

My personal reaction is that Umbridge is much more real than Lord Voldemort. EG, Umbridge is the everyday racist, sexist, discriminatory person that you could meet at the supermarket, whereas Voldemort tries to wipe out an entire group of people because they are different from him. Yes, I know that several groups have done this and its horrible and a BIG DEAL. But it is a big deal and that is precisely why it is less real in a way. You could meet Umbridge in your day to day life but not Voldemort. Also, cut it out with the kittens lady.

I think Umbridge is like Hillary Clinton (she reminds me of a toad about to catch a fly too) and Voldemort is like Donald Trump. Those are the choices we get: it's no wonder the comedian said 'Nobody for President, 2016.'

I hate the evil little cat lady more than snake face (this is the summary of the rant my parents had to listen too after I read this book)

Its true. umbridge is the worst character JK Rowling could invent. Even rita skeeter couldnt match her. Voldemort is bearable. In fact I think He is one the best fictious Villains. But I loathe Umbridge and Skeeter. Ugh I cant believe Umbridge was still in the ministry after The Order of the phoenix.

I almost couldn't finish the book BECAUSE OF HER

Honestly, Umbridge made me so aggravated I had to put the book down and allow myself to cool off. Hate her so much!

Yes, I couldn't wait for Umbridge to be gone in this book. I haven't read any of the books before or seen the movies so I was really surprised in my feelings for her.

Well yeah, You-know-Who was just one of those poor people who couldn't handle life as it was, and took to bad deeds to have revenge on the people he so much hated. Though, you shouldn't feel sorry for a guy who goes around killing or murdering people for any reason.
As for Umbridge, she is one irritating and gross character, an egoistic woman who probably for frustrated with life and vented that on all others, especially kids who become helpless victims. In the book, I hated Umbridge, and all the bureaucrats of her organisation.

Ya I hated Umbridge more than Voldemort. I mean Voldemort did try and kill Harry and stuff and he killed a bunch of other people and his parents, but everytime Umbridge appeared innthe book, I wanted to like kill and strangle her! I just hate her much!!!!!!

I hated Umbridge sooooo much. I had two HP dreams, one about Umbridge and one about Voldemort/Quirrel and the Umbridge one scared me more

I love Umbridge, in the "villain you love to hate" sense. She's a fantastic villain. And it's great fun to see her get what's coming to her in the end.

I think it's reasonable to hate Umbridge more than Voldemort because, when she is Headmaster, she shows cruelty daily to young people, students. Yes, Voldemort is evil, but we don't really see his daily cruelty. He's more of a figure on the sidelines, waiting till the final battle to emerge. Umbridge was a fantastic villain, though! Whenever she figured in a scene, I absolutely seethed with anger!

Umbridge is the worst kind of person. Voldy is evil and unbalanced and acts evil without excuse. Umbridge is wicked. She tries to make believe she is a decent person enforcing rules, but in the end is as wicked as Riddle, but worse because she's also foolishly prejudiced. My only regret was that they only left her unconscious. It is true however that there are people like this in all walks. Sirus got it right, life isn't just separated into people that are good and Death Eaters and she's the perfect example.

I hate Umbridge.... she just annoyed the crap outta me... with her pink clothes and kitten crap... Come on give me a break.... I absolutely LOVE Voldemort.... best character EVER!!! LOL

I think the difference between these two villians was that Voldemort knew he was doing evil and made no excuses for his behavior. Whereas Umbridge was delusional in thinking that the evils she did were actually good and right. That is what made her more terrifying and detestable in my opinion.

For me, Umbridge stands for hypocrisy, self-righteous wickedness and just pure loathsomeness. Love to hate her. :)

I used to teach and at one point I worked for a principal who was a lot like Umbridge. Now I'm a writer. I think you can guess why.

Umbridge is definitely worse than Voldemort. With Voldemort, you know where you stand. He's pure evil, and if you don't agree with his philosophies, he is going to kill you. Painfully. But with Umbridge, you never know. She smiles at you while she watches you suffer the dementor's kiss. I think her outward appearance of an old auntie is very misleading, too. Voldemort even looks evil.

OoOhHoOh

I would strangle Umbridge, and Avada Kedavra her without a second thought.

I hate her too. She has the most idiotic rules I've ever read...

Ridiculous. Voldemort is evil to the core. Umbridge is just stubbornly wrong, and a little sadistic about it. She may remind one of certain groups of devoutly religious people - but not the ones who usually devote themselves to helping the poor.

Oddly enough, the characterization of J. Edgar Hoover in the movie 'J. Edgar' is very similar to the character of Dolores Umbridge. They have the same rigidness of belief, the same sense of moral superiority, the same level of denial and repression.

I don't hate Dolores Umbridge - or J. Edgar Hoover - or Voldemort, for that matter. I just feel sorry for them. They're all pathetic.

(mild spoiler for future book in series) If any female character in the series truly deserved the horrible comeuppance she got, it was Bellatrix LeStrange.

Something else to think about: if you find you consistently judge female characters more harshly than male characters, question whether that might be ingrained sexism.

I almost could not finish that book because I kept getting so angry at her.

Ditto the OP. I HATE Umbridge. Every time I see her, I want to punch a wall. She made me scream so often while reading book five. I'm just sorry she didn't meet some terrible demise. =P
