Greetings to everyone. My name is William (though I often go by "Bil") and I teach, research, and write about Early American History. It is nice to find a GoodReads group that is so large and active that reads and discusses serious, good history. I am particularly interested in the antebellum period and the trans-appalachian frontier, which have been the focus of my research over the last decade. But my next project is taking me back into the Colonial and Revolutionary era, and has an Atlantic World and maritime aspect. Finally, as courses on the Civil War are among the most popular among students, I am always reading new Civil War books, and especially interested in titles that will capture the interest of undergraduates.

Whenever I read Civil War books I always have the thought that if I could 'time travel' to any time or place, it would be 19th century USA. I am a lifetime resident of Georgia and sometimes regret that I have to work for a living and can't just travel around the state and take in all the history that's here. Hello – I am new to this group - just found out about it yesterday. I am a 57 year old accountant from the Southwestern United States and I've always enjoyed learning about history but only started doing it in earnest recently. Hope to make my way through US history first, and then go more global (eventually looking forward to Asia). For now - I’m just finishing up Philbrick’s book on the Mayflower and have been pretty astounded at the things I never knew or appreciated about the native culture in colonial America. There are aspects of it I’m sure I’ll never fully understand but some of what I’ve read, seen and heard through the years makes more sense now. Reading the book made me realize that I should probably have started at the beginning - so James Horn’s book on the Lost Colony of Roanoke is up next.

"Theodore Rex" is one of my very favorite books!! I got it by accident - I am a member of the History Book Club, and I forgot to "decline" my featured selection one month .....when the package arrived, I opened it just to see what it was. I intended to send it back, but decided to go ahead and keep it - best decision I could have made!! The book was amazing!!

Hello - I'm Sharon, an administrative assistant from southwest Ohio. I have been fascinated by history for as long as I can remember. I love political history, social/cultural history, and some military history. I am currently reading a fascinating book by Marc Levinson entitled, "The Great A&P and the Struggle for Small Business in America," which is the history of the A&P chain of grocery stores in America (late 19th century into the mid-20th century) and its subsequent effect on small independent grocers as well as how it revolutionized consumer shopping. (Will try to cite the book properly...)

I'm really excited about being here and look forward to the book discussions and adding to my book pile!

My name is Paul and I am an avid reader of US History. Attempting to read one book about every president, I am currently reading books on William McKinley and Grover Cleveland. I have worked my way throught most of the Robber Barons of the late 1800's and have read numerous books from Chernow, Philbrick, McCullough and Ambrose. I thought this group would expand the authors and books someone would not normally find out about. Most of the people I know do not read nonfiction.

My name is Michael(or Mike!)
I joined up because I read mostly non-fiction – twentieth century history, biographies – got a bunch at Christmas, like the final volume of William Manchester’s Churchill series. Also like those expensive and beautiful looking art books – which are really a form of history. Also do read some fiction from time to time – mostly to relax!

I am a little intimidated by the size of this group– hard to know where to start and participate!

I love the writing of William Manchester, who is one of the greats from my alma mater. During WWII he served with the Marine Corps and he also wrote a frank tale of his wartime experiences titled "Goodbye, Darkness: A Memoir of the Pacific War". I’m thankful Manchester survived the war to author his books.
