ARCHIVE ONE: PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF ~

My name is Svetlana and I'm working on a historical fiction set in 1945-1946 Germany with flashbacks to the Eastern Front and Nazi-occupied Ukraine. This calls for a lot of research, which shows in my reading list.
My main areas of interest at this point are:
- The Eastern Front;
- The Battle of Berlin;
- The Battle of Stalingrad;
- The Third Reich;
- Nazi-occupied Ukraine and the partisan war;
- The Allied occupation of Germany;
- Displaced persons in postwar Germany.
I hope to find here discussions and threads covering non-fiction on the Third Reich (not Holocaust), the Eastern Front and postwar Germany. At this point my list of books already read has over 100 titles which I will add here gradually.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

My name is William Burton McCormick, which sounds pretty pompous so you all can just call me Bill.
I am an American writer who has lived Latvia, Russia, Estonia and Ukraine. I presently split my time between Europe and Nevada.
I love history of most eras (I have a degree in Ancient Studies) and I recently spent a lot of time studying Eastern Europe during the years of 1850 to 1950 or so. That's where I primarily write my fiction too.
Anyway, I will imagine I will be popping up in the discussion groups on the World Wars, Russian Revolution, Latvian Independence Wars, and several others eras. Also love historical mysteries.
To give you a feel for my tastes my favorite non-fiction historical books were Allan Bullock's "Hitler and Stalin Parallel Lives", Livy's "The War with Hannibal", and Edmund Morris's TR books.
Take care, and I look forward to some great chats.
Best Wishes,
Bill

Thank you all. I have read the self-promotion rule, I didn't think I violated it. Just talked about where I lived and my interests. That's sort of fundamental to an introduction. Sorry to cause trouble.

Hi Svetlana! Those are very interesting subjects! Welcome (I am even newer to this board than you.) The Nazi-occupied Ukraine interests me a lot too (I lived in Kharkov). I look forward to hearing your findings/theories in the discussion groups.
Best, Bill

Thanks Rick! I look forward to it!

I did take a little stroll around some of your sunny forums and shady piazzas before deciding to join, it looks as if you have a great deal of vibrant discussion and debate going on.
A little about me, I'm an ex-pat Brit living in Madison, WI, where I lead a team which designs wind farms and gather large amounts of data to show how successful those farms will be once we've built them. I'm originally a physicist, but also have an engineering doctorate which made finding a job a little easier.
History has become something of a passion and a hobby of mine over the last ten years. Having started off reading many books on both World Wars, the English Civil War, and British Naval history, I then found myself wandering off into lesser charted territory such as Mike Dash's Tulipmania, or Peter Hopkirk's The Great Game.
My most-read authors: Niall Ferguson, David Starkey, Paul Johnson, Robert Massie, Eric Hobsbawm and Paul Kennedy. I enjoy reading the work of authors I don't necessarily agree with.
I try to read widely as well as deeply but am conscious that I've hardly begun to explore and understand the history of the US, hence my current reading around the Civil War and particularly Sandburg's biography of Lincoln.
I'm looking forward to meeting with you and discussing and sharing our thoughts on divers and sundry topics.
Chris Ziesler

Ooops, I see from previous comments I'm supposed to cite books differently, let's give it a go:
Tulipomania : The Story of the World's Most Coveted Flower & the Extraordinary Passions It Aroused
The Great Game: The Struggle for Empire in Central Asia
Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years and the War Years
And Authors:
David Starkey
Eric Hobshbawn
Niall Ferguson
Paul Kennedy
Paul Johnson
Robert K Massie
let's see if that works.

Robert Massie Freeman
Eric Hobsbawn
Paul Kennedy

I wasn't sure which Paul Johnson you were referring to so did not include it: demonstrating one of the reasons we ask people to follow this guideline.

Alisa,
Thanks, I realized after they appeared as links that I needed to press the other button. Also a few of my authors point to the wrong people.
Ah well, I'm sure that practice will make perfect.
No point in my getting all Wild Things about it :-)

You'll get there. It's book cover, author photo (when available) and author link. :-)

cheers ~

I'll get there:

thanks for your patience.

I hope you find many topics here that will pique your interest. Enjoy!

I live in Johannesburg, South Africa.
I come from a family of historians, and the only thing I ever really did do exceptionally well in academically was history! My sister is a very successful history teacher and re-wrote most of the country's history text books when SA became a democracy in 2004. I developed a particular interest in SA history after assisting in the research, stunned at how a whole history of a country could lie buried and hidden.
It didn't make history, but a few years ago, I came across an 8000 piece jigsaw puzzle, which mapped all the events of history from the birth of Christ to the new millenium. I decided to build it as a gift to my sister. It took three months of buiding each of the 500 blocks, which were labelled in French, which forced me to have to look up each event. It was all in comic charactures. It still hangs at the school where my sister taught at the time. It was a Guiness world record but I stupidly didn't register it.
That's me and thanks to my friend Chris for leading me to this group, I'm grateful.

Your introduction was truly interesting.....but darn, you should have registered that jigsaw puzzle with Guiness!!

You can read about the jigsaw and it's origins at this website
http://www.historiacomica.com/accueil...
I was glad to hear there is a second one (opus 2) from the Big Bang to the birth of Christ - its only 4000 pieces however. I have written to the creator - perhaps madness will drive me to do a second one! Or loneliness. There were only 200 squares, not 500 as I originally posted.
In the meantime I'll visit Guiness and see what the record is...
As we say in SA...
Viva Opus 2 Viva!
