Alisa (mstaz) Welcome Paul and Marla! Glad you found us and hope you participate in the discussions.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the books you mentioned should look:

Rubicon The Last Years of the Roman Republic by Tom Holland Tom Holland Tom Holland
The Thirty Years War Europe's Tragedy by Peter H. Wilson Peter H. Wilson
Byzantium The Surprising Life of a Medieval Empire by Judith Herrin Judith Herrin Judith Herrin

Paul Perry (pezski) Scott wrote: "The Thirty Years War fascinates me. Maybe we can start a Buddy Read on "The Thirty Years War: A European Tradegy". And I do want to be part of the discussion on Byzantium."

I put the 30 Year's War book on order after listening to a BBC Radio 4 programme about Germany (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0167zl1 - not sure if it's available outside the UK) which referenced it.

edit: and I've just found a copy of the Byzantium book for £3.75 online. Sweet.

Welcome Matt to the History Book Club. There are quite a few folks from the UK in the group so you should find a lot in common with your fellow group members aside from the love of good non fiction books and those with an historical framework.

Hello Paul. I am Chris and some years ago I read Rubicon The Last Years of the Roman Republic by Tom Holland by Tom Holland and that is definitely a great introduction to the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Imperial era. If you're interested in Roman history, I also recommend you look up Cicero The Life and Times of Rome's Greatest Politician by Anthony Everitt and Augustus The Life of Rome's First Emperor by Anthony Everitt by Anthony Everitt , Caesar Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy by Adrian Goldsworthy , and The Classical World An Epic History from Homer to Hadrian by Robin Lane Fox by Robin Lane Fox . These will give you a great idea of the Roman world during its heyday. If you are interested in the end of the Roman Empire, The Fall of the Roman Empire A New History of Rome and the Barbarians by Peter Heather by Peter Heather is a very good place to start before you try to tackle Gibbons.

Also, I hope you don't mind if I send you a friend request. I am relatively new to Goodreads and I am always looking to expand my group of friends on here.

Hello Christopher,

Thank you for welcoming Paul. However, it is best to send the member a note requesting that they be a friend or a friend request versus using the introduction thread. That way they can reply in private.

Also, please make sure when doing citations to add the links as well:

bookcover, author's photo (when available) and also the author's link

You got most of it right and I applaud you for trying.

I have taken the liberty to show you how they should be cited for future reference.

Lee Walker | 1 comments Hi all. I enjoy reading history from many periods but lately I have been focusing on late antiquity and the early medieval era. I am currently reading:

The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon by Edward Gibbon Edward Gibbon.

I recently finished Volume I, and I am up to the first part of Chapter XVIII, where it deals with the character of Constantine. So far I have very much enjoyed the work, except for Chapters XV and XVI (last chapter of Volume I and first chapter of Volume II), which broke off the narrative flow to drone on about Christianity for about 130 pages. In the edition I have (freely available from University of Adelaide eBooks site, as it is out of copyright), there are many notes by some 18th century editors who appear to be quite zealous Christians. They make a big deal of Chapters XVI and XVII, as if they are really controversial and shocking. Just goes to show how times change, because all I found them to be was boring. I don't think I will have time to finish this before you all start the Byzantium book in December. In fact I know I won't. So I might break off from Gibbon for a bit to join in the Herrin reading. At least I will see how I go. It seems to me that once Gibbon gets to Heraclius (610AD-641AD) he grows tired of treating the Empire per se, and begins to descant on the Franks, Arabs, Normans, Turks, and various other peoples who consumed the territory of the old empire. So it may be that, despite being much shorter, Herrin's work will flesh out more of the Byzantine Empire than I will encounter in Gibbon.

Lee, are you aware that we had a discussion of that book awhile ago. It is a real classic but it like reading any old classic: daunting yet of great value.

It is the kind of book where a break can be handy. So hope you can join in on the other. This thread is reserved for introductions but glad to have your hi all here and welcome to the group.

You seem to have the citations down so congrats on that one.

I have subscribed to GR for a while, but decided to join the History Group as I have recently semi-retired, and I can't play golf all the time, can I .....? I have also read through the posting guidelines already, to save the moderators the trouble of reminding me. I am looking forward to the Federalist Papers discussion when it resumes, although from looking at past threads there really doesn't seem to be a lot of discussion going on, or am I missing something? Each paper seemed to generate less than a dozen posts, but perhaps that is due to the excellent explanations provided by the moderators.... In any event, looking forward to catching up when the discussions resume.

Hello Phil,

It looks like you have done your homework. I look forward to your posts on the Federalist Papers threads. Some folks post on them and some folks read the posts that other people write like a blog. Hard to tell; but the more folks post the better the discussions become as you can probably see. But whenever someone posts; our moderating team will always post back and acknowledge you. Thank you for the kind words about the excellent explanations. And you can start now by reading and commenting on the first 31. We will be starting on paper 32 on Feb 6th.

Glad to have you with us.
