Stacy | 72 comments Looking for a chapter book that may have been a series. Read in the late 70's / early 80's. Believe it was set around 1900, in the U.S. It's about two or maybe three sisters. I remember three things. 1. The main character (who I think was the middle sister) gives lemmon drop candies to her friend who has the mumps. 2. The main character goes to a school where the teachers might be nuns. The students are walking in town and are allowed to buy ice cream cones. But the teacher / nun won't let the students eat the cone, they can only eat the ice cream, because she thinks the cones are bad for the complexion. 3. The sisters are at home and there is a thunderstorm. They are not allowed to sew because the needle might attract a lightning strike.
These may all be one book, or a series, or I might have dreamed part of it.
Also I think the main character might have had an old-fashioned name Hattie or Millie.

Chris | 68 comments This sounds a little like "All Of A Kind Family" by Sydney Taylor.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Probably not, because there were lots, I think 6, sisters in Taylor's books, and they were Jewish, so no nuns. It does sound like something I've heard of but not read, so I doubt I'll be much help, but I'll keep thinking. Be sure to come back and 'bump' this in a couple of months if you don't find it, or let us know if you do find it! :)

Stacy | 72 comments Nope. Not All of a Kind Family. Catholic not Jewish and small town not New York. Thank you for trying.
Also I think our school librarian read this to us in third or four grade which would have been 1976 - 1977 or so.

Cathy | 111 comments Stacy, the ice-cream thing is definitely from one of my favorites as a kid: Luvvy & the Girls Luvvy is the youngest sister and goes off to boarding school with nuns (I think her older sisters are already pupils there) and has all kind of wonderful times. As one would at a boarding school run by nuns!

Stacy | 72 comments Cathy that IS the book I was looking for. Thank you! The prequel is The Half-Sisters. Not sure if the lemon drops were from these books or something totally different. Will have to read them and see. But will move this to SOLVED.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments I'll shelve it. Thanks, Stacey, Cathy, and all.
