Even though he is one of my favourite characters, Barrie's story does not make it clear if he uses fairy dust. He definitely does things differently to the other boys at times. I will read the other book for the challenge, just to be sure.

One of my favourite Peter Pan things is the movie, Finding Neverland. Johny Depp plays James Barrie and it is the story of how he came to write the play Peter Pan. I also love the kid who plays Peter.

I have that movie. It is a good movie. It is a great example of the fact that Johnny Depp can also do serious roles and is a better actor than soem poeple give him credit for.

Well if it is unclear use the book. Lu said you could and she is the boss :)

I'm on leave so have plenty of time and want to read the other one anyway...

Lauren Smith Would you say that Railsea is an oxymoron? In the sense that you can travel by rail or by sea and you cannot use both at the same time, thus they contradict each other?

message 105: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I actually have clue. But if it is, that would be great. :)

Task 5 - something sweet in the title. Does it have to be edible or will a flower - rose - do?

I think the person that nominated it meant it to be edible :(

Lauren Smith Lu (The Muggle) wrote: "I think the person that nominated it meant it to be edible :( "

I nominated it, and yes Lu is right - sweet in terms of taste, not something cute or sentimental.
However, I would accept something that has a sweet taste but is poisonous.

message 112: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Anyone else have an opinion on Railsea as an oxymoron?

message 113: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Well I checked what an oxymoron is and I am leaning towards no, but I am not sure and that is why I didn't say anything. If someone says yes you can use it I won't object, because I am just not sure.
who nominate the task? Doesn't she/he have something to say?

Scratched around and found Honey for Tea and Sugar Candy Cottage. I enjoy her books so it will be nice light reading for a weekend some time soon.

Lauren Smith I have another question (starting to feel like a nag, but anyway).
I read a book set almost entirely in a mental institution. There's only one scene where the characters leave the institution for a few hours. The mental institution is in Queens, a this does play into the story a bit in terms of culture and economic status. Queens is in New York.
So does this count for the New York task?

message 117: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I'd say there's a loophole in that one - it didn't specify New York, New York - only New York. :P

message 118: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith That's what I was thinking too :D
I'm just a bit unsure because of the bit about walking the streets of New York...

message 119: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Maybe I missed something, but doesn't New York City consists of 5 boroughs and they are Brooklyn, Manhatten, the Bronx, Queens and Staten island. So Queens is part of New York City and New York City is in new York State. So either way you're covered.

message 120: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith There's no doubt that the novel takes place in New York, I was just unsure since almost the entire story takes place inside one building.

message 121: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I has to be set in New York and as long as the building is in New York I say it counts. :)

Would When the Sea is Rising Red by Cat Hellisen count as a red head?

message 125: by Varla Fiona (new)

Varla Fiona (dory_42) | 1332 comments Mod
The task states the main character must be red head or red head on cover. Is the main character a red head? If yes, then obviously it counts regardless of the cover... If not, I'm not sure. Who nominated the task? Get them to approve it...

Do you think Worldsoul (Worldsoul Trilogy, #1) by Liz Williams those count as clouds on the cover so that I can use it for the cloud task? I battled my way through the book and feel it should be useful for something at least.

message 128: by Varla Fiona (new)

There are clouds on the cover, so it should be fine in my opinion!

Looks like clouds :)

Thanks. So that at least get me to halfway with the challenge. I still need to find a redhead, but I need to clean up some bookshelves so I will keep my eyes open for some forgotten tome. I sat down the other evening to check what I still need to read to finish some of the A-Z challenges and managed to find the outstanding bits and pieces in my shelves.

Cool! I must say that I found more books on my shelves this year than I thought. My first impulse with new challenges is to buy books that fit the tasks, but due to my budget this year I wasn't able to do that and it surprised me how many books I had on my shelves that I hadn't read yet and that I could use for various tasks.

message 133: by Carolien (new)

Carolien (carolien_s) | 2729 comments Mod
We're buying a new house so the luxury I had this year of buying books for challenges is going to disappear soon. I am also able to raid my mother and mother-in-law's bookshelves for certain types of books which helps. I also still have a library subscription which I use regularly. I've introduced my toddlers to the libabry early on. I am quite good at reading stuff which I buy, but I can probably support my reading habit for at least two years without buying anything based on my bookshelves (of which we have 15 in teh house!)

message 134: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Well a new house is worth not buying books. especially since that gives you the opportunity to rearrange your books exactly to your liking. :)
I have always bought more than I read. I probably have about 4 years worth of reading still on my shelves. Not counting the books I am going to give to charity. I just have to make room for the books I really want to keep and read. But there are a lot of non-fiction and biographies in there.
Unfortunately I don't have the luxury to raid other peoples bookshelves. I have always been a bit special in my reading compared to family and friends. They don't read as much as I do or if they do erad it is stuff that I don't read and that is saying something since I read almost anything. :)
When I was very young I had a library subscription but got mad at the librarian, because I wasn't allowed to check out the books I wanted, because they were for older children. Nowadays it just isn't worth my while since most books in the Dutch libraries are translations and I much rather read the original.

Rofl anyone else have an idea?

message 139: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I swear I posted an answer here yesterday... Power failures must have eaten it.

You asked this question before Lu, when we were nominating tasks, I think. My answer then was no, it's not an oxymoron, because blood can be blue, it's just not common, therefore the terms aren't self-contradictory.

This time however, I googled it, and the term appears on one or two lists of oxymorons, so I guess you could use it.

message 140: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Ah I forget about that! Thanks for googling it :) Anyone else agree?

Then I'll use it :)

message 142: by Varla Fiona (new)

I haven't read it, but it was my task. The majority of the book needs to be set at sea, so more than half.

Lauren Smith Does anyone have suggestions for:

- a cover with a musical instrument

- a book published under different titles (my current option is Black Man/Thirteen by Richard Morgan, but it's long and I might not have the time. I won't read Harry Potter, and I've already read The Northern Lights/The Golden Compass)

No romance please. Thanks!
