Yes, it was some kind of romance. I believe they meet each other (somewhere) and then get together, they have a "romantic" scene, they have a fight, and I think they separate, I'm not sure.
Do you remember anything about where it takes place? Fantasy land, europe/america/arabian deserts/north pole? =) Is this fairly well-known? Sometimes you can have a sense of these things...
Since it was only "She _ed. He _ed." I didn't get a sense of the setting. I have no clue if it's well known or not...Sorry :)
Any clue about when you may have read it and whether it seemed new at the time or not?The other thing that came to mind totally doesn't fit your description. The nonsense poem in Alice in Wonderland, "They Told Me You Had Been to Her".
A short story that has an interesting use of pronouns and lack of proper nouns is also "Born of Man and Woman" by Richard Matheson. It's an older, scifi piece.
I read it in about 07, 08 and I believe it was a couple years old, (ten? twenty at most). It's none of those, but thanks.
Does the name Amy Hempel ring a bell? I'm pretty sure there was a story in At the Gates of the Animal Kingdom: Stories that did this, but I can't remember the name of it and can't find the table of contents.
Knots is like that - a little book of poems that illustrate relationship problems in simple sentences of he and she, repetitive but complex.
Natalie--if you bump your thread up every 30 to 60 days, you'll have a better chance of getting ID'ed.
