I agree. I went through some of the ones I remembered a couple of weeks ago, and there have been quite a few. I guess it comes up because THG is SO similar to BR.

Yep. The similarities are just too many and too clear to ignore. Also, some of us are bitter because some people we know spent decades trying to make an American "Battle Royale" film and now it will never get made because the studios don't want it dismissed as a "Hunger Games rip-off".
Also, I mentioned "Surviving The Game" because it's a delightfully-cheesy re-imagining of "The Most Dangerous Game".
And this: http://www.theonion.com/articles/mave...

Yeah, I have the ridiculous regular TBR (well over 1,000 books -- I tend to put anything that sounds vaguely interesting on it), and then to prioritize I had to make a bucket-list shelf, which mostly contains the books I keep hearing about and really have to get around to someday, or else. I try to keep that one under 100.
On topic: I lied in my last post, I ended up reading The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents cause I felt like I needed something light and fun after The Flame Alphabet.

Dear gods WHY? Can't you people just watch the damn original? Seriously, this one of my big pet peeves!

BAHAHA! I kinda lied too. I ignored the recommendations in the help-me-choose thread and started Sh*t My Dad Says instead. :)

I must have ADD or something, because I'm always reading a couple different books at once. I start one, and then part way through, I start another, and I read whichever sounds good at the moment. Right now, I'm in the middle of Other Worlds (which seriously rocks, by the way), Do the World a Favour, and Other Stories, A Kingdom Strange: The Brief and Tragic History of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, Fahrenheit 451, and technically, I'm re-reading House of Leaves, but I haven't even touched it in months. I'm also in the middle of a couple others, but it's probably been at least a year since I've read anything of them, so in my opinion, they don't count. I'm pretty much going to have to start back from the beginning, pretty much. >_< The worst part is, I'm thinking of starting a new one. A nice romance novel that requires no thinking, maybe.

Well, as Amber mentioned, the original adaptation wasn't available in the US until pretty recently. Also, the original is a good film, but there are some elements that could use some improvement... Also, do you have any idea how many times other nations re-make American films? ALL THE DANG TIME! And sometimes they're even better than ours! A re-make can be an improvement, as the American version of "The Ring" shows, rather than a lazy cash-grab (a la US "The Grudge").
Also, i decided to go with Zoroastrianism: A Guide For The Perplexed since the first week is on Zoroastrianism.

I finished Slaughterhouse-Five

My main reads right now are:
Boneshaker - It's well written, and the concept is great, but...... it's just a little dull so far.
Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader and Sh*t My Dad Says.
I've far exceeded my quota of arguing with people for the day, so I might have to bookmark some of those discussions for another day :)

I'm also reading Class A by Robert Muchamore, which is going well so far (before I got distracted) and I'm also reading A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin, but that one's slow going as I keep reading it and loving it, but then have to psyche myself up to read more because of how he breaks my poor little heart.

Oooh, that sounds interesting!..."
Me too.

And War Behind The Wire: Australian Prisoners Of War, Fingersmith and Alexander Pushkin's fairy tales."
What do you think of Doctor Zhivago...I wasn't crazy about it. Had to push my way through it.

Have spent the last few days trying to listen to Tigana by G.G. Kay. Not getting anywhere, though (a flag must go up as soon as I try to listen- I'm immediatly interrupted by kids/husband/puppy). arg

now into a little light viking escapism The Whale Road which is also enjoyable but for other reasons to Gatsby

Next-ups:
Threats: A Novel
The Corpse Walker: Real Life Stories: China from the Bottom Up
It looks like both of these are going to fall under the literary genre "Things I wish could be un-read."

Sorry, I just realized how unclearly my last post was worded. I'm enjoying The Leftovers. I meant that the next ones in my queue both look like they're going to be extremely unsettling.

I've been meaning to pick that one up as well (similarly late to the party). Any first impressions?

Right on.
Also:
Holy fxxk you guys, Threats: A Novel is intense.

I quite like it so far! A lot of "Huh, I never would have thought that, but it makes sense..." moments.
Nicholas wrote: "Holy fxxk you guys, Threats: A Novel is intense. " I'm itching to buy a copy of that.
I just finished Boneshaker, and it had a lot of promise, but didn't really do it for me. My review here if you're interested: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I have finally started Ghosts by César Aira - against Riona's advice. Sorry Riona! When it came down to it, I just couldn't do another steampunk novel in a row :(
I'm also reading Four in the Morning on Kindle. So far it's a reasonable waiting-in-line read.

Gotcha!

Finished this and LOVED it-gave 5 stars which i rarely do. I love a good twisted screwed up marriage story with lies, missing people, murder and betrayal all in one!

Well really its way more I just have 27 I have taken time to type in good reads as to read!
I'm almost halfway through Ghosts, and I started less than 24hours ago. It's so strange how 130 pages can go really quickly or painfully slowly! It's beautifully written though, and an easy style to read.

I love that book. Such an interesting combination of humour/Lovecraftian horror/bizarro.

I finished Ghosts last night, spent the night thinking about it, and still changed my rating 4 times while writing the review!

And that's kinda why I thought I'd really like it, but something's not clicking with me for some reason and I can't really put my finger on it. It's really frustrating.
I'm really dragging my heels with this one, so much so that I've started another one: When I Was Five I Killed Myself, which has blown me away thus far.
But as for John Dies at the end, I'm not sure whether to put it down and comeback to it (which I hate doing) or carry on chipping away with at it.

I loved every word of JDatE, so as much as I'd agree that putting a book down and coming back sucks, I'd say this one deserves a fresh start. Maybe after you've read the ones that are really calling you.
Who knows? At least if you find that your first impression was right, you'll know it wasn't because you were just in the wrong frame of mind or something.

That's hilarious - I've started that book twice and not gotten into it! I'll have to give it another go at some point though. It has been a while.

... yes, I have to trick myself into discovering what I feel like reading most. Decision making isnt my strongest suit. "
I have found myself doing that too! I put my "unread-but-acquired" shelf on random and tried forcing myself to read the first one that popped up. I like the idea in theory, but always end up reading the one that jumps into my head too!
There is also another thread Riona started to get others to pick a book from your short list for you. That method sometimes works for me!
