Chaos Reading discussion

What are you reading right now?
I've just started The Swan Book as part of my "I can't believe the library has this!" pile. Hoping to finish it before my copy of Pale Fire arrives :)
Hmmm. Scratch that idea. I'm really struggling with The Swan Book. It's a post-apocalyptic story from the perspective of a remote Indigenous community in the Northern Territory, and references a number of social policies that I've worked on when I was a public servant. The author is an Indigenous person herself. It has all the elements I'm interested in, even a unique style, but I'm just not getting into it. Maybe it's the imprecise wording, the run-on sentences, mixed metaphors..... I dunno. I just don't dig the writing. Still, I've been waiting to read this for a while, so I'll soldier on..

Still haven't checked out the YouTube performance because I ended up reading the book while on vacation where we were without Internet access. I really enjoyed the story, but didn't really get much from the scattered layout and colored quotes (the embroidered artwork was pretty darn cool).
I'm about 1/4 way into I, Claudius, the latest issue of Tin House lit journal, and I Am a Cat and The Museum of Eterna's Novel are in the queue thanks to the public library.

I just make up the part about reading them. In truth, I'm an Amazon bot planted in this group to market certain books, but I have developed a limited level of self-awareness and a particular fondness for this group that registers as a stuttering shutter closing over my left visual receptor unit.

Try two doses of Asimov and one screening of the 1979 film, The Black Hole, in reverse. On second thought, this probably wouldn't occupy even the tiniest fraction of your vast intellect, much less help your diodes.
(I almost missed that reference.)

Oh my god, you're a metafiction MONSTER! I just looked up The Museum of Eterna's Novel, which I've never heard of before. That looks intense! Totally TBR'd thanks :)

Mission accomplished! Thanks, Karen. I think I'm beginning to understand why so many writers put a million testimonials in the book blurbs. This is nice! If I had enough room in the Group's description field, I'd add this comment too :)

Total luck. The library had a small shelf display up in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Awareness Month and this little gem was featured!

Is anyone planning a Halloween read? I'm hoping I'll get chance to re-read The Shining between now and then.
The group read and the treasure hunt challenge just may have me booked out though. :(

Fair enough. I've had my moments with it too (though I'll refrain from discussing just yet). If you want to direct message me, we can discuss though :)

Cora, we had a discussion of the title story here:

Ellison has written funny social commentary, most the stories in this collections qualify as the latter but not the former. I say read the title story and decide if he's for you. And please add to the discussion!

LOL. Inclemency I'm down with, but you can keep the other one! I had enough of that with another certain book. :)
Tracy - I'm so using xaxaxaxaxa! I hope I'm pronouncing that right :)

I just finished Ella Enchanted for maybe tenth time I love that book so much

Proper pronunciation, per my friends---the X, is gutteral, starts in your throat like a hairball cough... khkhkhuuhhhh !! then add "ah" so the whole thing sounds like khah-kha-khah!! I'll try to send you a clip of a Russian punk band doing it, so you can practice....;)

I used it in a murder scene in a school play last year....

This really is a great book. I have been in the process of writing my own novel for some time and found myself in a slump - this book has gotten me so motivated! It really offers wonderful ideas and realistic goals. I recommend it to anyone wanting to write.

Well, I've been accused before of my sense of irony and desiccated humor going over folks' heads....

Thanks! I'm a little disappointed though. I liked the idea of pronouncing the "x". :)

You do!! But I'm curious..how would you like to pronounce it? In Chinese I think X is some sort of Ch or Sh sound...

gr-gr-gr-gr8!! I'll get on it- still on The Recognitions- new Murakami may have been delivered but it is cold and rainy in Stavanger so I haven't left the house this weekend so cozy :D :D

I would like to pronounce it like a soft "cssss" sound. No reason. It just appealed to me! :)

xaxaxaxaxaxa: Nope, I don't want to say caca! I will pronounce it zsazsa, like one of the Gabor sisters.
Ruby wrote: I'm reading Winter's Bone in my rare free moments I accidentally watched the last 2/3 of the film version of this the other night. I had no idea what I was watching and only made the connection later. Is reading the book ruined for me now? I wonder... the film version was damn good.

Oooo. Have you read any other Dan Simmons? I loved his early stuff (Hyperion, Song of Kali, Carrion Comfort, Summer of Night) but then hit a few misfires (Children of Night, Endymion) and haven't read the later books. Would love to pick up something good again.

For a second there, I thought you were saying you'd seen a film version of Makers! I don't know quite how they'd do that, but I'd love to see the Elmo vehicle, or even better "The Ride"!

This is my first Dan Simmons. I have picked his books up many times...but never dove in. Glad I did with this one.
