Started: An Object of Beauty on audiobook. Yay!

Still reading on kindle: The Origin by Wilette Youkey....I like its potential but I'm not sure I'm really liking where it's going... I'll slog through it though.

Lined up: The Fall

I have seven books in various stages of having been read, but haven't decided which my next main paper book read will be. Hoping to power through the end of Lady of Devices on Kindle tonight and make my mind up about the other in the morning. It's...meh. I still can't quite get a handle on it. Or maybe I'm just not meant to read YA.

D-Ray (the_wood) | 11 comments Right now I am about twenty pages intoNight in the Lonesome October by Richard Laymon. I started with .Cuts (IT WAS OK), .The Traveling Vampire Show (LOVED), now I am moving onto this. I don't know what started the Richard Laymon kick. Will probably move onto something else for a bit after this one.

But just not being able to read it in a day which is usually how long it takes me to read a book has made me wonder if it will be worthwhile by the end of the book because so far im on page 271 and im still not feeling it.Matched

Jenn Saam | 7 comments Currently I am reading Lincoln: A Photobiography. It is a Newbery award winner. My goal is to read all of the Newbery award winners. So far it is pretty good for a nonfiction book. I typically don't like nonfiction since it is difficult to stay focused when reading nonfiction.

message 109: by Rach (new)

Rach (lolaade) Currently reading American Gods i like it so far, also reading 6 other books in rotation as well as The Invisibles, Vol. 1: Say You Want a Revolution which is probably the best graphic novel i've ever read...so far.

message 110: by Christy (new)

Jess (bettyjuggs) | 10 comments Per the suggestion of the amazing nerds at my local bookstore I am reading Ready Player One which is full of gaming & 80's nostalgia. Totally in love with the main character.
And I am also reading John Dies at the End, this book has me grossing out, scared at demonic agendas and laughing out loud at the immature locker room type jokes.

ZOMG. I loved John Dies at the End. Your bookstore sounds awesome!

I finished the short story When Sysadmins Ruled The World last night. Not Doctorow's finest work, but okay.

I also finished Lady of Devices. More fun, but not amazing. Review here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I'm part way through four others, including Slaughterhouse-Five for the first CR Group Read, starting 30 June. Also, Derek is going to be picking out a book for me to read for the Apocalypse Whenever Group's Book Challenge.

I've also had a bunch of books I ordered turn up at once, including Iron Council & Ghosts. Plus Blackout should be here any day now, which I may drop everything else for. Phew! So...many...books.....!

*Just a reminder to everyone-Please use the book title links in your posts. Kthx :)

Theo | 159 comments Starting Sense and Sensibility. I absolutely adore Persuasion and Pride and Prejudice, so I feel like I should read all of Jane Austen's novels (there's only six, it's not like it's a huge committment).

Mike | 18 comments Almost finished with Last stand in a dead land.

message 120: by Devin (new)

Devin | 1 comments Just finished The Andromeda Strain, yesterday I read through The Road, the day before finished A Dance With Dragons (not in one day like the other two).

The Road was pretty visceral. It left me feeling upset and drained. I loved it. Then I read a Michael Crichton book because that always distracts me for like 12 hours.

I just started The Fault in Our Stars. I've been putting it off because it sounds so powerfully sad. Not that being powerfully sad is a bad thing, I just don't want my roommate to see me cry over the Kindle or anything.

I'm roaring through Slaughterhouse-Five, which is a good thing, since I've just been assigned this as a reading challenge:
Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader
A book of essays. About reading.
Let's just say it's definitely not something I would have picked up on my own!

message 123: by Kinch (new)

Kinch (kinchski) | 15 comments As usual I'm reading too many books: I just started Sexing the Cherry which is beautifully written (at least on the two pages I've read!) and American Gods which is a little dry stylistically - so far at least - but I'm only up to pg. 13 and I've heard good things, so gonna give it time. I'm about half way through The Fate of Africa: A History of Fifty Years of Independence, pretty damned awesome both for a general overview of how things got to where they are now, and for fascinating profiles of crazy mofos like Mobutu and Haile Selassie. Also about half way through Another Country which is stylistically and structurally magnificent, and thematically pretty ahead of its time and still confronting and relevant. About a quarter of the way into Nick Cave's first novel And the Ass Saw the Angel but kinda stalled, as it is written with a built in Southern drawl that just doesn't work, and is distracting to me.

pfft, anyway, I should finish Another Country soon, and I'll let y'all know what I think.

message 124: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) | 457 comments I loved both Sexing the Cherry and American Gods.

Ruby - that book of essays sounds good! You'll have to let us know what you think.

I'm still working on The Yiddish Policemen's Union.

Joseph wrote: "About a quarter of the way into Nick Cave's first novel And the Ass Saw the Angel but kinda stalled, as it is written with a built in Southern drawl that just doesn't work, and is distracting to me."

My partner read it and liked it, and I'm really keen to read it, but last time I went to pick it up he told me about a Nick Cave interview he saw. Apparently Nick wrote it during his trashy German period and literally sat there with a thesaurus purposefully putting in the biggest and most interesting words he could find. It really bothers me just knowing that!
Being Australian, I also cringe at the thought of him trying to pull off a US southern drawl. Trying to write accents you don't really know never works!

I loved American Gods, BTW.

Riona - I'll let you know how it goes. Having spent all day trying to source a copy (my fault for not having used the library service here before), I am somewhat less than enthused! That's the point of a book challenge though - being pushed to try something I wouldn't normally read. And Derek has pretty good taste :)

message 128: by Rose (new)

Rose (threesnails) Riona: that's good to hear! I have a hard time with it because I read most often on the bus, and I find its not an appropriate bus read. Too gory, makes me cringe at times. But I stick with it and I am hoping to get through it in one good sit.

I also enjoyed American Gods. I'm a huge Neil Gaiman fan. His writing is dry but I find, that he usually has good pay offs at the end of his stories.

If you are not feeling it for Matcheddo not continue. I liked it but then really did not care for Crossed at all. It takes turns going back and forth in the two character's points of view. It got tiresome.

Mary Anne (patkneazle) I am reading The Magician King by Lev Grossman. It is WAY better than the first in the series, The Magicians. I am almost done, but I think Grossman is setting me up for a sequel. Sigh.

It is billed as the adult Harry Potter, but I don't think it quite rises to that height. :)

Re Slaughterhouse-Five: Excellent! This should be a great group read.
Re John Dies at the End: If you're looking for more by the cracked.com writers (like I was when I finished that one), I loved Rx - Episode 1: The Blackouts by Robert Brockway. Problem being, he's serialised it and part two is nowhere to be seen yet. Sigh.

Dying to read House of Leaves, but it's one of those "I have to have a hardcopy" books I think. And I can't afford another BookDepository order this month!

Frozenwaffle | 163 comments Currently I'm getting to the middle of The Catcher in the Rye and although I'm liking the main character train-of-thought, his way of talking is really annoying. everyone is "old whats-his-name" and that kind of thing.

Until now I don´t see what made it an internationally acclaimed classic tho, honestly. But its a good read so far.

Also started on Slaughterhouse-Five yesterday, I bought the kindle version. I went to the summer book fair thats taking place here this month, and asked around in hopes of buying it. Sadly, Slaughterhouse 5 has been sold-out without reposition for 30 years now, here in Portugal. Wow. xD I did get some good deals on a couple of other books, to make up for it :D
