Chaos Reading discussion
It's all about you

What are you reading right now?
I finally finished House of Leaves this week, and it was wonderful. I haven't posted the review yet, since I think I'll need to take some time to collect my thoughts!
I'm thinking that since we haven't picked a theme for the next group read yet, maybe we can do a random discussion on HoL next instead? What do we think?
I haven't been able to participate in the last few group reads, so I'd love the chance to discuss something!
Also read One Bloody Thing After Another which I loved too. Funny, since the style is almost the precise opposite to HoL! Again, I've yet to write the review, but it's a really unique book. Very simple and direct writing style, but pretty graphic at the same time. It's like YA hardcore horror!
Not sure what to read next, but it's between Vurt, Scorch Atlas and Varamo I think.

Excellent! I'll put the HoL group read details up shortly.
I ended up going with Scorch Atlas, BTW. Definitely another unique read.

Still reading The Spook's Curse.
Planning to re-read Slaughterhouse-Five because I hated it when I read it before, as I have hated just about everything I've ever read by Vonnegut, but I'm spending this month doing a lot of re-reading and re-evaluating of my past literary opinions.

Thanks for that, this was the first Bradbury book I tried and I was wondering if this is his style in all his books. Its a relief to hear it isn't so!

I guess I chose the right DM: I'd been wanting to read this author for a while- I was about to order number9dream because I loved the title - and finally ordered Cloud Atlas because of all the rave reviews, and I'm loving it so far.

Wow, really? This was one of my all-time favorite books. But I suppose different strokes for different folks and all that.
Sex and Rockets: The Occult World of Jack Parsons is what I am currently reading. I am about 100 pages into it and nothing has been said of sex, so I am a little disappointed, but I get this feeling it is about to explode with sex for some reason. I suppose it is because the last four or five chapters have been about nothing but rocket science for the most part. I am excited about the intro to Enochian Magick chapter! Has anyone else read this book or read books in a similar vein?
I'm liking Scorch Atlas but it is very downbeat and depressing. And it turns out they're essentially short stories. So this is how i've justified starting another book: Embassytown.
Okay, technically I started that one in July, but I had to leave the book in Normanton because of weight limits on the airline so I had to pause for a bit.

This picture does indeed show what a perfect Sunday morning looks like! I will try to recreate it in my own world tomorrow.

Decided to wash it out of my mouth with a doorstop fantasy in the form of Elantris. Making more progress with The Spook's Curse.

Nice one! My profile pic is what a perfect Monday night in Gulf Country looks like: Lying on the couch with House of Leaves. If you disregard the bugs, lizards and wallabies of course.

Just got around to writing the House of Leaves review if anyone's interested: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I've steered clear of analysis of the story, since we'll be able to discuss that in a couple of weeks in the Group discussion thread. Really, REALLY looking forward to that one!
Now.... back to Embassytown. It's taken me a while to get into it because of the writing style, but I'm starting to get engrossed..

This seems to be a common phenomenon. I was on my third Palahniuk when I realized that I was tired of his books as well.
I hadn't heard of Room until it came up here (I'm a little out of touch these days). It seems to be the book to read, although the premise ooks me out in a big way.

Yep, same for me. I think he's a little one-note.

Honestly, I could never get past about 6 pages of Brett Eaton Ellis. I loved '100 Years', but I haven't read it since I was 18. I probably would have like Ellis a lot more when I was 18.

I was just thinking you might like an author called John Niven- he wrote a book called Kill Your Friends that I thought was great :-)

I* am for it(House of lLeaves). I have been recommending this book to my more advanced students,(on the sly) and some have epiphanies about lit over it. Also to Leo, 100 Years of Solitude is on my top 5 list.. but it's been awhile. I'm about to start J.K. Rowling's "adult" book.

I've just hit the halfway mark on Embassytown and it's finally starting to flow for me now. I haven't loved the style of writing, and the way the plotline has been unfolding has felt too contrived for my tastes. But now that all the exposition and dual time frames have finished, I can see myself loving the second half.
I'm still dipping in & out of Scorch Atlas, but I'll be leaving behind on this week's remote trip. I am probably taking Northern Lights with me though, and am still chipping away at The Seducer on my iPhone/Kindle.

Started Legion and am part-way through Please Save My Earth, Volume 8.

Ruby, any way we can get a topic/discussion thread/whatever you call it on Embassytown? I've been dying to talk about it with somebody! Especially the whole idea of language.

This one has been sitting at the top of my to read list for months, starting just before life got seriously into the way of my reading time. Several friends of mine are reading the sequel now. How's the audiobook version?

Still reading "After Dark".
Started Death Warmed Over.
This is turning out to be a good month for horror/spooky readings!

Sure! I'll post a discussion thread for it in a sec. Good timing, since I just finished it about half an hour ago!
I've just started Califia's Daughters for my next read.

This story tells a tale of isolation and fear ."
I have had the hardcover sitting for a long time on my shelf. Is it good?"
I have mixed feelings about this book. At times I want to abandon it, and then the next moment, I am totally there in the story, and I can't put it away.
I've just had to put down Califia's Daughters for a while. I think the dogs being such a big part of the story are going to hit a bit close to home right now.
So, I'm thinking of either The Golden Compass or Vurt instead. Then again, I am hankering for some sort of epic fantasy. Maybe Son Of Heaven or even caving and starting A Game of Thrones.......? Argh. Too hard.

I've read The Terror and parts of it were just weird but the whole "based on real events" is what kept me reading it. That and I like Simmons' writing. I encourage you to finish it. Not a great read perhaps, but I learned a lot about 19th C. sailing, finding the Northwest passage and being so very cold!

Oooh, The Thirteenth Tale was really, really good. What were your thoughts on it?

Also, finished Death Warmed Over and then Desperate Passage: The Donner Party's Perilous Journey West. Both were great!
Still reading "After Dark".
Started the Tim Curry/Alan Cumming audio version of Dracula.

Oh no! I just started it, and am really getting into it. I really have read a lot of cyberpunk this year. I keep coming back to it without intending to!
Matthew - Is it the first time you've read The Hobbit? I loved it as a child and then as a young adult. I wonder what "pushing-40-me" would make of it...?

I loved Bellis in that book. Such a unique heroine.
Oh, and Bastard John of course! I. LOVE. him.
I wonder if Mieville named him after this guy?
