Hermione (booksandtea20) | 11 comments I didn't know what folder to put this in, so I guessed. :)

I was looking for a "what should I read next?" group on goodreads but the one's I did find weren't very active, and since I value Ann and Michael's and all their listeners opinions very much, I thought I'd ask all of you.... WHAT SHOULD I READ NEXT????

Let me give you some background first. I'm an avid reader and finished Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children yesterday and that book just erked me. I didn't like it at all. I haven't read a book I didn't like in a LONG time. Now I'm kind of "timid" on what I should read next. I've gone thru my TBR pile a bunch of times (which miss Peregrine's was in) and can't figure out what to read. I've kind of narrowed it down to these:
Tethered
The Night Strangers
Sharp Objects
The Illumination
Damned

Any help or a "vote" would be appreciated. Maybe we can help other BOTNS listeners that are in the same boat as me... :) Thanks everyone!!

LK

Jen (jenlb) | 51 comments Skippy Dies, if you haven't read it yet. It starts off as a cross between John Irving and Douglas Adams- I'm still not finished, and I'm not sure where it's going to end up. It was on my TBR list for quite a while. I haven't read Damned, but the others on your list left me a bit cold.

I also just finished Divergent- not my usual cup of tea, but it was fun.

Kathy Hi, Lauren--

I haven't read any of the titles in your TBR pile, so I can't advise there. However, on looking at the top titles in your Read list, I'd suggest that you try the next three volumes of Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce series. (Read them in order because he introduces new characters in each.) I'll hazard a guess that you'd probably also like Marilyn Johnson's The Dead Beat Lost Souls, Lucky Stiffs, and the Perverse Pleasures of Obituaries by Marilyn Johnson , which I enjoyed a lot.

Prepare for the avalanche of recommendations that are sure to follow your query here. Happy reading!

Kathy H.

I'm reading Skippy Dies by Paul Murray too, and am finding it very Pynchon-esque.

I read The Night Strangers and thought it was just ok. I also have most of the other books you listed on my to-read list. I can second Divergent. I really liked it.

Also, LOVE your Gryffindor scarf in your photo!

I also did not love MPHFPC! From your list, I've read The Illumination and Damned, and I would recommend The Illumination. The concept is really interesting. I'll tell you that it is more like a collection of short stories (each segment focuses on a different person) rather than one story- if I had known that going in, I probably would have liked it even more!

Louise | 279 comments Well, I haven't read any of those you list, but
I see you liked The Graveyard Book, how about Coraline or Neverwhere? They're such great reads!

The Darkest Room I also enjoyed very much :-)

Vanessa (saltnvanessa) Definitely Tethered or Sharp Objects from your list. Unfortunately I haven't read any of the other ones from your list.

Mark I'm midway through Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and like you...am struggling through it. Just not keeping my interst. but i will see it through. It is certainly not the page turner that the Hunger Games is.

Haven't read any book on your list.

I just finished it. Definitely liked the second half better than the first. Hope it gets more enjoyable for you.

Carol (carolguttery) | 14 comments I just finished listening to The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern ( Ann's suggestion) and really loved it. The book's imagery is enchanting and the audio performance is great. I also recently finished Reamde by Neal Stephenson (Michael's suggestion). I liked the modern gamer aspect mingled with a classic spy thriller sensibility.

Liz Brown | 15 comments I just started the impossible lives of greta wells by Andrew sean greer, it is really good. I read a story of a marriage by him. I would recommend this book.

FYI, deleted a message from KyleB ... he raved about a book in a way that sounded a bit odd to me, so I looked into his profile and saw that he joined this group and several others just before posting similar messages to all of them about this one book. And the only messages he posted on any GR groups was promoting that book. So I'm calling it spam, and deleted the message.
