What Joseph Campbell is basically saying in this quote is it is basically a blueprint on what to do and not to do when going on a quest in ancient times. Also it kind of explains what heroes have done in the past to ruin their quest. “We have not to even risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us.” What this quote basically says is that the hero now already stands more of a chance against the trials of the universe than the previous people because we know not to make the same mistakes as they did. This is a good idea because revenge is very bad it blurs the line of good and evil and can end up destroying you and the people around you that you love. Also because ambition can also be very bad sometimes in certain situations it is good to be a little ambitious but usually it leads to going too far. Being to competitive is one of the most common things in males especially the ones in Greek mythology this can lead to the demise of many innocent people just to get what you want.
This idea of finding things you didn’t know about one’s self when not expecting it is very often what happens when you try to obtain a goal or accomplishment. This is very good to keep in mind so you can embrace it when it happens and not brush it aside. Because you never know when you might need something that you already discovered.
This relates to mythology by including gods in the quote and warning heroes of ambition, revenge, and discovering yourself. These themes such as ambition, revenge, greed, jealousy, and power plague the heroes of Greek mythology and other mythology also. But what separates Greek mythology from other religions and myths is that the gods are just as greedy, ambitious, power hungry, vengeful, jealous, and corruptible as the heroes and villains of Greek mythology. That is what entices and makes this the most popular mythology to study.
This quote means the reader does not have to do things alone and can ask for help with those around him. The quote states that the path of life is well known and that the reader only has to follow the path of the people who have changed the world. The quote mentions that people should try and help others and not to judge others because of what they have done. I agree with the concept of the quote applying to mythology. Myths have been told through time to teach things like morals, compassion, and humanity. The quote by Joseph Campbell applies to the modern reader because it talks about the good and bad in life. The quote states that “the labyrinth is thoroughly known” meaning that people have faced and are going through similar problems as the ones people currently are. That people all have different ways of dealing with emotions and way of life. The quote mentions that “we have not even risk the adventure alone,” which means that the reader does not have to face his or her problems alone, that there will be someone that has gone through the exact same problem before or is currently facing it. I agree with the quote for the reason that it shows the reader how life is, or how it can be. The quote holds a deeper understanding that a person never really has to face one thing alone. The quote states “where we have thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence,” meaning that the reader is not trying to figure out his story but trying to look at the story of others around us and in the end the reader ends up discovering his story under that.

This applies to mythology in how the stories are put together. “And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god.” This is a common pattern, for example, in some stories heroes looking for something bad to defeat or concur find the journey to be a self-learning experience that changes them for the good and makes them stronger. “And where we had thought to slay another, we slay ourselves.” This also is a trend we see in villains in mythological stories; the villain tries to hurt the hero when in reality they are defeating themselves, so when he tries to become greater than another he ends up breaking himself down one by one only concurring himself.
This concept is very true, often the journey is what makes us who we are, when we gossip we are only hurting ourselves, and when we think we are alone we stumble upon those who are similar to us. Even today we follow the trends from old mythological characters, it is how we learn and become who we are, that is what Joseph Campbell wanted us to remember.
This quote by Joseph Campbell has very many references to life. Every single line is filled with many hidden examples of how Campbell sees life. The very first line, for example, states that "we have not to even risk the adventure alone for the heroes of all time have gone before us". This line is showing that even when an individual is alone and trying to accomplish a task, they will still have that knowledge that there was once someone before them who had previously achieved the same task or a task very similar to the task the individual is attempting to endure. Nothing in this world is impossible if an individual is willing to motivate and push themselves to achieve the goal they have set for themselves. This quote is very meaningful to the young readers of our time by showing them examples of following a hero and not having to risk anything by themselves. This quote relates very much to the study of Mythology. There are many hidden aspects of life within this quote in which the reader has to focus on finding; just like in Mythology the audience or the readers take time to focus on thoroughly studying the Mythological story to find hidden terms and lessons within the words. As the audience, I agree very much with the concept. From the day people appeared on this earth, there have been myths after myths being passed down from generation to generation and from culture to culture; although Myths are not always true and don't always cure the ill, I think the idea of them is very beneficial to many.

All risks have been taken, all adventures have been experienced, and all labyrinths have been journeyed. Campbell shows that very few will be the first to face a problem because many others have gone through it before and that an individual’s thoughts don’t always predict the outcome. His wise words bring comfort, ease, and reassurance to the reader. This quote most certainly applies to the study of mythology. Since mythology deals with the themes of goodness and evil and the danger of hubris, this quote relates to mythology quite nicely. The heroic figure is prominent in most of mythology and the idea of bravery and overcoming trials and facing fears is common in much of mythological stories. As a reader, I agree with this concept and believe that myths are very important in teaching lessons and illustrating man's journey through the challenges that life brings.

This sentence could also express where one sees sadness and suffering, there could potentially be a phenomenal triumph. For instance, as one individual sees someone who is blind and deaf as a hopeless failure, another might see the potential and beauty that this person possesses. This sentence tells readers that their expectations can oftentimes be different than the reality.

Or, when one is pointing out flaws in another, they are just realizing what they don’t like in themselves. In many ways, this quote is applicable to the lives of every human being on this planet, many of the hidden meaning found only when read throughly. In a simple summary, this quote is a basic meaning to finding depth in your life through knowing that you are not the first or the only person to have gone through the trials that seem devious at the moment. Everybody placed on this earth must realize that problems will come their way, no matter what, and to know that the path has already been tread for each and every person on this planet to follow is quite a comfortable thought. Knowing that others have gone through similar problems is compared to not having to risk the adventure alone, as if we are being lead by the strongest people the universe has to offer.
From there, the quote goes on to say, “And where we have thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god.” Abomination meaning a person who is loathsome or disgusting whereas a god is someone superior with supernatural qualities. Through the eyes of Campbell, every person when in times of trouble has the capability to become something much greater just because of the process and how it gradually makes us stronger. One may not think that going through something terribly wrong could turn them into a powerful being, but through Campbell's eyes its all possible, and that is a very strong thought.
A favorite line of the whole quote, “And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves” rings the most truth in my opinion for my personal life. Many people seem to be bringing down others around them through hurtful words, actions, or exclusion for the plain purpose of bringing themselves up. What this part of the quote points out is the fact that not only do the words bring the person purposely being hurt down, but they tear the owner of the words down also. What we think are insults personalized specifically for the person we would like to hurt, end up just being a weakness in disguise. Nothing is worse than an insecurity, and many people believe that the best way to solve that is through hurting another human being, and that is simply wrong.
The quote continues following the same theme, dissecting a human's mind to bring comfort and reassurance. Coming directly from the mouth of a wise man with much experience with myths, things about it should specifically relate to what a myth is. Mythology is very generalized, yet personalized for every being ever to lay foot on earth. Bringing a new perspective on how life works is how mythology works, which is exactly what this quote is doing. It has the ability to open your mind to a whole new side of life, allowing your mind to become much more opened to life as a whole.
Joseph Campbell's statements in The Power of Myth has really quite an obvious meaning. The beginning and end both convey the same concept: that no matter what one endeavors to do, there is always someone who has already done the same thing. Or, at the very least, that someone has done something of similar nature and amplitude.Another idea expressed in the passage is that oftentimes you'll be surprised by what you find. If one looks more deeply, however, one could conclude that another idea conveyed is that what one is truly trying to accomplish can be different from what they think they are.
This relates to the study of mythology in that most (if not all) collections of myths deal with the same set of things: creation from a void, explanation of natural phenomena, and the rewarding of good and the punishment of evil. These issues recur in today's "new mythologies," and therefore the quote connects the modern era to that of the mythologies of the past.
These concepts are legitimate, to an extent. Although it is true that there is little one could do that is radically uncommon, every person's live and all the actions contained within have some aspect of uniqueness. Even though one is able to obtain help and advice from others who have trodden a similar path, ultimately each person has their own singular path, and can ultimately be alone in their endeavors.

We have only to follow the thread of the hero path.” It means that no matter what individual shall attempt that person’s feat was not the first and most certainly won’t be the last. The metaphor is comparing how even though an individual's task may be difficult and unique, the task has still been accomplished in the past.

The modern relevance is tremendous, through how when an individual is heading through a difficult time and having a negative aspect on things but when they arrive through the event they find that it wasn’t as bad as they thought it would be. The next sentence “Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to center of out own existence.” Follows the same guidelines as the sentence stated before. This show modern relevance by if an individual gets their hopes set for a too high of a standard, one might be let down of what that person can accomplish. The previous two sentences foil each other by saying that how a negative aspect can turn out as a positive experience and/or the other way around. The last sentence stated in the quote tells one that their will always be someone there for you.
The quote as a whole relates to today by comparing how a event can appear in a positive or negative way but end up as a completely different experience then what an individual would have intended.

These examples are not always going to lead one straight to her desire. In the thread of the hero path, there are struggles and obstacles they must overcome. Very rarely does a hero easily achieve an accomplishment. So if one looks at what she wants to do, then she must look toward past heroes and figure out what obstacles she might have to learn to face along the way.

If this person lets the fact that she is too worried about others and what they are doing get to her, then she has put her ultimate goal of making a difference in jeopardy. Slaying another must not mean to literally kill a person or necessarily slay them. It infers that “slaying” another can be letting go of one’s pride, thinking of oneself as superior to others, or intentionally putting someone below themselves to make her rise above. This will lead to one’s own demise.

What they don’t realize is that everyone is rooting for them. There are many people in our world today that would not want our country and lives to become better. When someone is struggling, losing hope, feeling discouraged and thinking that they will never reach their goal, they have to remember that we are all here standing beside them and supporting them, waiting for their inner hero to surface changing our lives.
In conclusion, Joseph Campbell’s quote can connect to mythology. In mythology there are many life lessons that it teaches. This quote talks about becoming a hero. In all myths that include heroes, they face obstacles before they become a hero. This quote is referring to the lessons in mythology that a hero might learn along the way to their crowning moment. The quote is also bringing a more modern view on mythology, showing you how the life lessons that are found in myths can relate to your life, and becoming who you really want to be.
Mythology is about humans. Human fears, desires, pain, and love. Mythology is a way that people tried to explain things they didn't understand such as death and the after world. It also lets people show the things they fear or want. Joseph Campbell's quote relates to mythology in the way that it also is about the human mind. This quote just makes me feel like even if I think I’m doing something on my own there are still so many people helping me. No one can do everything on your own it takes a group of people.Each sentence in this quote has a different meaning and advice. Joseph Campbell wrote this to show that what you want might not be as much of a blessing as you think it is, and that bad things can end up being a good experience for you. Life is a double edged sword so make a good experience out of the bad and the good.
I do agree with the concept of what he wrote. We are not alone in this world which means we don't have to face our battles alone. What I most strongly agree with is that what may seem like a blessing can be a curse, and what may seem like a punishment could actually be a positive life changing experience. Humans can not predict how something will affect our life.Joseph Campbell really understands life and you can tell but what he wrote.

Humans have used Myths to relate to their lives because they are so similar in many ways.“We have only to follow the thread of the hero path.” To become the best of our ability this tells of the importance of following in someone’s footsteps, in this case a hero. People can use the “thread” or mentality of a hero to help them through life as a guide to help achieve your goal.

Joseph Campbells complex quote is very agreeable to me. The standards he sets in this quote are ones that can help anyone through their troubled life or quest. Campbell beatifully Incorporates the stories and emotions of mythological characters and how very similar there personalities are like the typical human, of our day.

The point of is that even if you are lost in life and feel there's no escape, you can never turn back and go to the dark or evil side, that even if your dying of hunger and you want to eat you shouldn't steal, you should look for a better way to deal with things and stay on a good path which would be the hero path in this case.
This applys to the study of Mythology because when you look back at legendary Mythical heroes they were always honest and sacrified themselfs for what they thought was right. Hercules is a great example because he was a great hereo and he was born with a poor farm family not knowing that he was the son of Zues the god of all Mythical creatures and he never stole one single thing even though he was poor but he never stole and what he wants you to do is if your ever in that occasion to look for a way out because everyone has a destiny in this world.
I do accept the concept of never doing the wrong thing that people have gone what you have gone through and that as bad as things get that always try to stay on the "hereo path" and always do good. "The labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path."
This famous quote by Joseph Campbell is stating that we as mortal humans cannot simply try something once and become a professional, "We have not to even risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us." This part of the quote states that we as people are able to accomplish great successes, not because of ourselves, but because of the heroes and role models that have paved the way for us. “We have only to follow the thread of the hero path", further describes the concept that we follow people of the past. A good example of this is cultures in different countries where we see that traditions and sometimes difficult methods of success and survival are passed down from generation to generation. When you think about causing revenge on others, you might never think of the impact that may have on you, but the truth is “And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves.” This line is a very good example of all the evil and revenge that is in the world if someone calls you a name in front of the class and you decide to get revenge by punching them in the face the person in trouble is you.
Many people that cause revenge to others don’t get dealt trouble personally, but they will have to live with the haunting pain and remorse for the rest of their life. Those who slay will be slain.
This quote overall can refer to all walks of life, although it is part of mythology, it still has a very deep meaning on modern life. I think this quote shows that no matter what time period we are in humans will act similar and portray common emotions and ethics.

Joseph Campbell’s quote is a symbol of the unknown path we are all set upon to eventually conquer our fear. Someone has walked this road before, which creates and almost comforting feeling to know you are not alone on this journey and people before you have faced the same difficulties you will.
The study of mythology is pretty much stories of heroes, villains, creatures and monsters that can be related to things and/or situations around us or within us. This quote digs deep into to everyone’s hopes and fears in life just as mythology does for the past and present. Mythology is rich in telling heroic stories, and as the quote states, “For the heroes of all time have gone before us,” we all will eventually be heroes to those who will walk this path in the future.
Mythology is based on fear and how people over come it. Sometimes to over come your fear, you must think deeply and overcome the monster in yourself. Yes, this concept is highly believed in because if you already knew how to overcome fear it would not exist. It takes myths, heroes and mythology to motivate and to bring the hero out in all of us.
I really like Joseph Campbell's quote from the Power of Myth and this is what the quote means to me. “We have not to even risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us”. This is saying that the generations before us have pathed pathways before our generation enabling us to do anything in life, that one isn’t alone in struggles every one of us face in life.“The labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path”. This is saying the same thing in the last quote. Life is well know, people have mastered it, Hero’s have set pathways with threads making it possible to follow the hero’s example in life.

This is saying that by turning against one another on the journey of life, then we just make our own harder, instead you and I should bring and support each other.

This quote makes me think of life like a maze that we are all walking in, heroes have left threads that we can choose to follow. There are other people around you like your friends and family to support you. You may get lost but there are many other people that are lost to so you are never alone.

I think that these lines are saying that we may not always find what we expect, but something greater. The troubles we shape in life can shape who we become. “And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world”. There are some people who are always negative, and they are always expecting to fail. Then they face the miracle of success and it is like finally finding god. When going away and distancing yourself from other people and all everybody’s problems, you really get to know yourself and come to face with your own difficulties in your life.

The first step in the hero’s path is the mundane world. The mundane world is a place where the hero does not feel comfortable or just doesn’t seem to belong. In the book the Odyssey by Homer book five is a perfect example of the mundane world. Although Odysseus has everything a mortal man could want such as a beautiful goddess, delicious food, and an island that is sublime, and he still isn’t satisfied. Odysseus is uncomfortable and longs to go home to his mortal family. Odysseus, just like any hero is not satisfied with such predictability and comfort. The message in book five is that a hero must give up comfort to discover their own true greatness.The next step in the hero’s journey is the call to adventure. Odysseus gets the call to adventure in book five when Zeus sends Hermes to order Calypso to let Odysseus go so he can make the adventure back home to his mortal family. Calypso lets him go but not without trying to persuade him with her fancy food and wine. The message in this book is that no matter how long you have to wait, with hard work and dedication you will get your way.

Calypsos island and decides to go back home to his mortal wife. This shows that he is a loyal man and can resist even the greatest challenges as all heroes do. If you are going to follow the thread of the hero’s path you have to be able to resist challenges and overcome challenges. In the real world when you take that first sip of alcohol you can either overcome the challenge or fall into the addiction.
The next step in the hero’s path is the path of trials, new enemies, friends, challenges, skills and new knowledge. In book eleven an enemy that Odysseus makes is the Cyclopes. The Cyclopes is symbols for a challenge that you create yourself because you are too cocky, when they get into the Cyclopes den they could have just stole the cheese and some sheep and left without having to face the Cyclopes but because of Odysseus’s huberous six of his men get killed and eaten. Although it is difficult for Odysseus to defeat the Cyclopes he overcomes the challenge that he created by outsmarting the Cyclopes and using his sheep to escape.
We have not to even risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us. The labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path. And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god. And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves. Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to center of our own existence. And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.
