The Power of Myth

This is a good idea because revenge is very bad it blurs the line of good and evil and can end up destroying you and the people around you that you love. Also because ambition can also be very bad sometimes in certain situations it is good to be a little ambitious but usually it leads to going too far. Being to competitive is one of the most common things in males especially the ones in Greek mythology this can lead to the demise of many innocent people just to get what you want.
This idea of finding things you didn’t know about one’s self when not expecting it is very often what happens when you try to obtain a goal or accomplishment. This is very good to keep in mind so you can embrace it when it happens and not brush it aside. Because you never know when you might need something that you already discovered.
This relates to mythology by including gods in the quote and warning heroes of ambition, revenge, and discovering yourself. These themes such as ambition, revenge, greed, jealousy, and power plague the heroes of Greek mythology and other mythology also. But what separates Greek mythology from other religions and myths is that the gods are just as greedy, ambitious, power hungry, vengeful, jealous, and corruptible as the heroes and villains of Greek mythology. That is what entices and makes this the most popular mythology to study.

This quote applies to the study of mythology because through generations parents have told their kids stories to frighten them so that the kids won’t do the same things people did in the past. The quote applies to mythology because myths hold morals for the children and people about humanity and compassion. The quote applies to mythology by showing morals of what will happen with power.
I agree with the concept of the quote applying to mythology. Myths have been told through time to teach things like morals, compassion, and humanity. The quote by Joseph Campbell applies to the modern reader because it talks about the good and bad in life. The quote states that “the labyrinth is thoroughly known” meaning that people have faced and are going through similar problems as the ones people currently are. That people all have different ways of dealing with emotions and way of life. The quote mentions that “we have not even risk the adventure alone,” which means that the reader does not have to face his or her problems alone, that there will be someone that has gone through the exact same problem before or is currently facing it. I agree with the quote for the reason that it shows the reader how life is, or how it can be. The quote holds a deeper understanding that a person never really has to face one thing alone. The quote states “where we have thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence,” meaning that the reader is not trying to figure out his story but trying to look at the story of others around us and in the end the reader ends up discovering his story under that.

This applies to mythology in how the stories are put together. “And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god.” This is a common pattern, for example, in some stories heroes looking for something bad to defeat or concur find the journey to be a self-learning experience that changes them for the good and makes them stronger. “And where we had thought to slay another, we slay ourselves.” This also is a trend we see in villains in mythological stories; the villain tries to hurt the hero when in reality they are defeating themselves, so when he tries to become greater than another he ends up breaking himself down one by one only concurring himself.
This concept is very true, often the journey is what makes us who we are, when we gossip we are only hurting ourselves, and when we think we are alone we stumble upon those who are similar to us. Even today we follow the trends from old mythological characters, it is how we learn and become who we are, that is what Joseph Campbell wanted us to remember.

This quote relates very much to the study of Mythology. There are many hidden aspects of life within this quote in which the reader has to focus on finding; just like in Mythology the audience or the readers take time to focus on thoroughly studying the Mythological story to find hidden terms and lessons within the words. As the audience, I agree very much with the concept. From the day people appeared on this earth, there have been myths after myths being passed down from generation to generation and from culture to culture; although Myths are not always true and don't always cure the ill, I think the idea of them is very beneficial to many.

This quote most certainly applies to the study of mythology. Since mythology deals with the themes of goodness and evil and the danger of hubris, this quote relates to mythology quite nicely. The heroic figure is prominent in most of mythology and the idea of bravery and overcoming trials and facing fears is common in much of mythological stories. As a reader, I agree with this concept and believe that myths are very important in teaching lessons and illustrating man's journey through the challenges that life brings.
The first sentence in this quote, “We have not to even risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us” explains that one doesn’t have to take a risk alone, for others in the past have gone before. All troubles that may come one’s way have been faced before. This links together very well with the next sentence stating that “the labyrinth is thoroughly known.” This means that the twists and turns of life are known by many. One is not the only one who has had to confront the many ordeals that life brings. “We have only to follow the thread of the hero path.” This means that many have gone before and one has only to pursue what heroes of the past have. Although there have been many successes and many failures, one is not alone.
Toward the middle of the quote, Campbell says “And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god.” This line is saying that many people go into troubling situations expecting the worst but finding that it was actually a blessing in disguise. This sentence could also express where one sees sadness and suffering, there could potentially be a phenomenal triumph. For instance, as one individual sees someone who is blind and deaf as a hopeless failure, another might see the potential and beauty that this person possesses. This sentence tells readers that their expectations can oftentimes be different than the reality.
The quote goes on to express that when one is judging another, they actually just fear what they might become. Or, when one is pointing out flaws in another, they are just realizing what they don’t like in themselves. Joseph Campbell poetically explains this by saying, “And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves.” The actuality is that many people call attention to others’ imperfections and weaknesses to keep their own faults and weak points from being noticed.
“Where we had thought to travel outwards, we shall come to center of our own existence.” This line explains that when one is looking for answers about who they are and what their purpose is, they start to understand that they need only to search within. Campbell ends the quote by saying, “And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.” This line is saying that the human race is linked together through common experiences that everyone shares. One is not alone because the heroes of the past have shown the way.

The first sentence of it states, “We have not to even risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us.” From even the first line, you can see the comfort Joseph Campbell wants one to see though knowing that the even the world's greatest warriors have had to go through difficulties similar to the ones many face in a modern world, and knowing that they made it through it is a very beautiful thought for such a difficult thing to overtake; life. Knowing that others have gone through similar problems is compared to not having to risk the adventure alone, as if we are being lead by the strongest people the universe has to offer.
From there, the quote goes on to say, “And where we have thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god.” Abomination meaning a person who is loathsome or disgusting whereas a god is someone superior with supernatural qualities. Through the eyes of Campbell, every person when in times of trouble has the capability to become something much greater just because of the process and how it gradually makes us stronger. One may not think that going through something terribly wrong could turn them into a powerful being, but through Campbell's eyes its all possible, and that is a very strong thought.
A favorite line of the whole quote, “And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves” rings the most truth in my opinion for my personal life. Many people seem to be bringing down others around them through hurtful words, actions, or exclusion for the plain purpose of bringing themselves up. What this part of the quote points out is the fact that not only do the words bring the person purposely being hurt down, but they tear the owner of the words down also. What we think are insults personalized specifically for the person we would like to hurt, end up just being a weakness in disguise. Nothing is worse than an insecurity, and many people believe that the best way to solve that is through hurting another human being, and that is simply wrong.
The quote continues following the same theme, dissecting a human's mind to bring comfort and reassurance. Coming directly from the mouth of a wise man with much experience with myths, things about it should specifically relate to what a myth is. Mythology is very generalized, yet personalized for every being ever to lay foot on earth. Bringing a new perspective on how life works is how mythology works, which is exactly what this quote is doing. It has the ability to open your mind to a whole new side of life, allowing your mind to become much more opened to life as a whole.

Another idea expressed in the passage is that oftentimes you'll be surprised by what you find. If one looks more deeply, however, one could conclude that another idea conveyed is that what one is truly trying to accomplish can be different from what they think they are.
This relates to the study of mythology in that most (if not all) collections of myths deal with the same set of things: creation from a void, explanation of natural phenomena, and the rewarding of good and the punishment of evil. These issues recur in today's "new mythologies," and therefore the quote connects the modern era to that of the mythologies of the past.
These concepts are legitimate, to an extent. Although it is true that there is little one could do that is radically uncommon, every person's live and all the actions contained within have some aspect of uniqueness. Even though one is able to obtain help and advice from others who have trodden a similar path, ultimately each person has their own singular path, and can ultimately be alone in their endeavors.

In the three sentences where the quote states that, “We have not to even risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us. The labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path.” It means that no matter what individual shall attempt that person’s feat was not the first and most certainly won’t be the last. The metaphor is comparing how even though an individual's task may be difficult and unique, the task has still been accomplished in the past.
“And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god.” This statement means that where an individual might find treachery and hardship, instead may find a reward or high praise. The modern relevance is tremendous, through how when an individual is heading through a difficult time and having a negative aspect on things but when they arrive through the event they find that it wasn’t as bad as they thought it would be. The next sentence “Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to center of out own existence.” Follows the same guidelines as the sentence stated before. This show modern relevance by if an individual gets their hopes set for a too high of a standard, one might be let down of what that person can accomplish. The previous two sentences foil each other by saying that how a negative aspect can turn out as a positive experience and/or the other way around. The last sentence stated in the quote tells one that their will always be someone there for you.
The quote as a whole relates to today by comparing how a event can appear in a positive or negative way but end up as a completely different experience then what an individual would have intended.

“We have not to even risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us—“ This first line refers to the idea of not fearing making a difference. It means that if one want to become a hero, she is not out there alone. There are many others that have gone before that have shown us that the impossible is most definitely possible. She need not fear being the only one. Risky adventures alone can be scary, intimidating, and can hold a person back from what they truly want to accomplish; but comforting memories of those heroes who have gone on before us to make significant differences, can reassure us.
“We have only to follow the thread of the hero path--” To modern reader that wants to be a hero, there are examples of those who have gone before to whom she can follow and look up. These examples are not always going to lead one straight to her desire. In the thread of the hero path, there are struggles and obstacles they must overcome. Very rarely does a hero easily achieve an accomplishment. So if one looks at what she wants to do, then she must look toward past heroes and figure out what obstacles she might have to learn to face along the way.
“And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves—“ This part of the quote means if a person out to destroy someone else on this path, she will only destroy herself. If this person lets the fact that she is too worried about others and what they are doing get to her, then she has put her ultimate goal of making a difference in jeopardy. Slaying another must not mean to literally kill a person or necessarily slay them. It infers that “slaying” another can be letting go of one’s pride, thinking of oneself as superior to others, or intentionally putting someone below themselves to make her rise above. This will lead to one’s own demise.
“And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world—“ This part of the quote can mean that when someone is struggling on their pathway to becoming a hero, that they could start to lose sight of their goal because they begin to feel alone. What they don’t realize is that everyone is rooting for them. There are many people in our world today that would not want our country and lives to become better. When someone is struggling, losing hope, feeling discouraged and thinking that they will never reach their goal, they have to remember that we are all here standing beside them and supporting them, waiting for their inner hero to surface changing our lives.
In conclusion, Joseph Campbell’s quote can connect to mythology. In mythology there are many life lessons that it teaches. This quote talks about becoming a hero. In all myths that include heroes, they face obstacles before they become a hero. This quote is referring to the lessons in mythology that a hero might learn along the way to their crowning moment. The quote is also bringing a more modern view on mythology, showing you how the life lessons that are found in myths can relate to your life, and becoming who you really want to be.

We have not to even risk the adventure alone, this sentence says, we shouldn’t have to try to
face a trial by ourselves. There will always be someone that understands what you are going through
and can help you.“For the heroes of all time have gone before us,” and “We have only to follow the thread of the hero’s path,” heroes such and Martin Luther King jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Terrisa , and so many more
have given their whole lives to helping others and make a difference so people like you could live an
easier life. They had to face struggles just like the rest of the world, and you must learn from them and
follow the path they have set for us.“The labyrinth is thoroughly known.” Everyone has faced struggles and are the only one that has faced a trial. Millions know what another person is going through and have concurred the battle. People know what to do in a similar situation. Seek the help of someone who has experienced it.“Where we thought to find abomination, we shall find a god,” This sentence shows that bad things can be a double edged sword. What can cause you pain and hard ship could also be one of your greatest
blessings. Having to deal with trials like losing a family can actually help you by making you a stronger
person.“And where we thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves.” Hurting others physically or mentally
tells people more about you then it does about them. Hurting another person could hurt you even more then it will hurt the person you are hurting.“When we thought to be alone, we shall be with the rest of the world.” You are not alone. People are always there to help you, give you advise and help you through trials. This quote just makes me feel like even if I think I’m doing something on my own there are still so many people helping me. No one can do everything on your own it takes a group of people. Each sentence in this quote has a different meaning and advice. Joseph Campbell wrote this to show that what you want might not be as much of a blessing as you think it is, and that bad things can end up being a good experience for you. Life is a double edged sword so make a good experience out of the bad and the good.
I do agree with the concept of what he wrote. We are not alone in this world which means we don't have to face our battles alone. What I most strongly agree with is that what may seem like a blessing can be a curse, and what may seem like a punishment could actually be a positive life changing experience. Humans can not predict how something will affect our life.Joseph Campbell really understands life and you can tell but what he wrote.

“We have only to follow the thread of the hero path.” To become the best of our ability this tells of the importance of following in someone’s footsteps, in this case a hero. People can use the “thread” or mentality of a hero to help them through life as a guide to help achieve your goal.
“And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god.” This part of the quote really helps readers understand that they can grow from their problems that from their abominations they will be rewarded.
“And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves.” Many people in the world judge others far too often. This quote shows that the people that are judged by others today might be the ones who save the world. It shows that everyone has a purpose to fulfill and no one judge the life of another.
“Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence.” Expressing ourselves is important in life and that’s what the quote is referring to that everyone tries to be like others when it pays to be unique.
“And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.” when it seems that no one is on your side your wrong someone is out there with the exact same feelings as you. Everyone has gone through the same thing you have. That is what Joseph Campbell is trying to get readers to realize.
Joseph Campbells complex quote is very agreeable to me. The standards he sets in this quote are ones that can help anyone through their troubled life or quest. Campbell beatifully Incorporates the stories and emotions of mythological characters and how very similar there personalities are like the typical human, of our day.

The second sentence "The labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path." The Labyrinth was a huge maze and was very hard to get out. The point of is that even if you are lost in life and feel there's no escape, you can never turn back and go to the dark or evil side, that even if your dying of hunger and you want to eat you shouldn't steal, you should look for a better way to deal with things and stay on a good path which would be the hero path in this case.
This applys to the study of Mythology because when you look back at legendary Mythical heroes they were always honest and sacrified themselfs for what they thought was right. Hercules is a great example because he was a great hereo and he was born with a poor farm family not knowing that he was the son of Zues the god of all Mythical creatures and he never stole one single thing even though he was poor but he never stole and what he wants you to do is if your ever in that occasion to look for a way out because everyone has a destiny in this world.
I do accept the concept of never doing the wrong thing that people have gone what you have gone through and that as bad as things get that always try to stay on the "hereo path" and always do good. "The labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path."

“We have only to follow the thread of the hero path", further describes the concept that we follow people of the past. A good example of this is cultures in different countries where we see that traditions and sometimes difficult methods of success and survival are passed down from generation to generation. The present generations are learning from their past generations, and taking these traits and methods as some sort of process from "heroes".
The line "And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god.", describes that moment when one might feel that they have done something bad, or that they are going to experience a terrible fate, and end up coming upon something greater than they could have imagined. A lot of times when people get disappointing news, when they have to face a trial that is difficult to overcome. People tend to find that they have more inner strength than they thought, and they can get through difficult experiences if their mindset is in the right place.
When you think about causing revenge on others, you might never think of the impact that may have on you, but the truth is “And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves.” This line is a very good example of all the evil and revenge that is in the world if someone calls you a name in front of the class and you decide to get revenge by punching them in the face the person in trouble is you.
Many people that cause revenge to others don’t get dealt trouble personally, but they will have to live with the haunting pain and remorse for the rest of their life. Those who slay will be slain.
This quote overall can refer to all walks of life, although it is part of mythology, it still has a very deep meaning on modern life. I think this quote shows that no matter what time period we are in humans will act similar and portray common emotions and ethics.

This quote, mythology, and the myths from our past are hidden within everyone. Deep thoughts and fear lurk among us, as did the heroes before our time. The power of myth is what drives us either towards or away from our biggest fear in life, but eventually everyone will face their fear, making us all heroes in the end.
Though often times you feel alone, lost in a labyrinth of uncanny twists and turns, you're not the first traveler of this path. No one is the first to travel a certain path; heroes have been through the struggle and faced the fear in us all.
Joseph Campbell’s quote is a symbol of the unknown path we are all set upon to eventually conquer our fear. Someone has walked this road before, which creates and almost comforting feeling to know you are not alone on this journey and people before you have faced the same difficulties you will.
The study of mythology is pretty much stories of heroes, villains, creatures and monsters that can be related to things and/or situations around us or within us. This quote digs deep into to everyone’s hopes and fears in life just as mythology does for the past and present. Mythology is rich in telling heroic stories, and as the quote states, “For the heroes of all time have gone before us,” we all will eventually be heroes to those who will walk this path in the future.
Mythology is based on fear and how people over come it. Sometimes to over come your fear, you must think deeply and overcome the monster in yourself. Yes, this concept is highly believed in because if you already knew how to overcome fear it would not exist. It takes myths, heroes and mythology to motivate and to bring the hero out in all of us.

“The labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path”. This is saying the same thing in the last quote. Life is well know, people have mastered it, Hero’s have set pathways with threads making it possible to follow the hero’s example in life.
“And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves. Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to center of our existence”. This is saying that by turning against one another on the journey of life, then we just make our own harder, instead you and I should bring and support each other.
“And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world”. This last sentence is my favorite part, everyone feels lost and alone at one point or another. But if we’re all lonely, then really we’re not alone because we’re alone together.
This quote makes me think of life like a maze that we are all walking in, heroes have left threads that we can choose to follow. There are other people around you like your friends and family to support you. You may get lost but there are many other people that are lost to so you are never alone.

This is a truly brilliant quote. It captures the essence of the morals and dilemmas in mythology and let’s us apply them to our own lives. This quote is an excellent guide to live by when going through difficult times and most of life in general. What Joseph Campbell is saying is that through life’s trials, we may not always find what we expect. How we face those trials can determine the person we are. We can use the morals in ancient myths to help teach us and govern our own decisions.

“We have not to even risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us. The labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path.” What Joseph Campbell is saying here is that we have had people before us to pave our pathways for us, so taking the risk of trying to do everything on our own is unnecessary. It is just extra work that is not needed and may take away from time that you could already be finished and living your dreams.
Another quote from Joseph Campbell is “And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves.” People can be very rude to each other so that they can tear that person down, but it turns out that it only tears them down. An example is on facebook, somebody made a fake profile for another girl that went to their school. It said a lot of mean and hurting things about her on it. They were charges a fine under the law and had to pay a lot of money because of the harmful things that they posted. Then as they continued to grow up, they had the burden of hurting a poor innocent girl for the rest of their lives, and it won’t look good when they are trying to apply for a college. Then when they are older, they will look back on when they wren younger and hate all that they were and all that they did. So, in the end it only hurts the person who tries to hurt another.
“Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence.” Trying to somehow get away from ourselves, and become some kind of different person than we already are because we are not satisfied with the person that we already are. It may be looks, personality, clothing, or wanting to be more like somebody else. It’s all coming from the caring of what other people think about, not what you think about. Yet, that’s all that matters, is what your thoughts are about yourself. In the end, even though our reputations may be changed, it will only be a thin mask that at some point will break because you’re true identity will never go away, it is a part of you.
“And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with the entire world.” No matter how the feeling of loneliness haunts about, how its thought there isn’t one person in the world out there. That there’s nobody that understands. Misunderstanding has obviously been made, because that is not true. There is always somebody to be there to catch for a fall, and to dry a tear off of your cheek. And there are always people out there that are suffering more, so to fill that loneliness you must help others through service to find true happiness in yourself.

“We have not even to risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us.” This first sentence means to not be worried about doing something because no matter what it is it has already been done, someone before has attempted to do it. The second sentence “The labyrinth is thoroughly known.” Is stating that it has been done so many times that the outcome is known, nothing can change it. “We have only to follow the thread of the hero path.” Refers to how all that it is that we need to do to do it right is to follow the “right path” when it says “follow the thread” and the “hero” is kind of playing with the idea of god, many think that god will lead them towards the ‘the right path of right and wrong, making wise decisions. The fourth sentence “And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god. “ is stating that when there is hate in the heart attempt to find what little sanity is left. The fifth sentence “And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves. “ is referring to how humans shouldn’t judge or be judgmental towards other humans, because everyone has something wrong with himself or herself, no one is perfect. The sixth sentence “Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence.” It means to first find surrounding issues of one and judge them before getting to conclusion of others. The last sentence “And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world” it is referring to all the greed and cruelty of the world and how people stop caring about each other and how everyone should care and look out for each other no matter the circumstances.
I agree with the concept of this quote. It applies to the study of mythology because it is referring to things which have happened in the past and know serve as an example of what people have tried to accomplish, and how it has gone from right to wrong. Through out the whole quote it is giving out the idea of a myth by showing ethos when it is playing with the idea of destiny and its meant to be kind of thing, the ethos are religious, spiritually, godly type of descriptions that apply to myths when mythological heroes are described in hero stories, which are also portrayed in this quote.

This quote is very inspirational because it gives off a thought in the readers head that if one tries something that feels impossible they know that someone else has tried the exact same thing and has accomplished it so it makes the reader have more confidence.
The quote also talks about how people are very different and unique in their actions and thoughts yet very similar, how superheroes are fake but we look up to them as if they were real inspirations and they help make us better people and want to do exactly what they do, In the second half of the quote it goes into the act of making fun of someone for what they do or how they look. Some people do it to make friends, make people laugh but by making fun of someone doesn’t only hurt their feelings, it hurts your character and most people will think of you differently if they catch you picking on people who are different. The very last part of the quote is telling people that they are never alone to fight your fears or overcome their challenges that there are people who can help them that have own personal experience or that are offering there labor to you.

This applies to the study of mythology because it is referring back to the heroes and people who have succeeded to shape our world today. In mythology for whatever religion they have, those figures that have led them to conquer every obstacle thrown at them. People look up to these people and always want to follow in their path. I agree with this concept, because people have gone through every crevice through the “labyrinth” in the quote. We are really never alone, we always have our supporters and we are always following in someone else’s path. People are always quick to judge the people who are ahead of us, this judgment comes from jealousy and it make us second guess ourselves. There are some people who are always negative, and they are always expecting to fail. Then they face the miracle of success and it is like finally finding god. When going away and distancing yourself from other people and all everybody’s problems, you really get to know yourself and come to face with your own difficulties in your life.
This quote has such strong meaning and depth that it can really help a person stop and evaluate their own life. When people are feeling so terribly alone, they can stop and realize that other people have gone through this, those same people have also conquered this. That feeling of someone else did this, so I can, really drives people and motivates them to do the task that much more. They can also look around and see who is supporting them. Support can always make a person feel better, then that even motivates them to not let everyone down. It helps you and others around you, it shapes the world.

"And where we have thought to have found an abomination, we shall find god." This means that when a person expects to face the worst, they will find a gift there. Every problem a person shall face will come with a lesson as well. A person can learn for that and it will be gifts that will benefits there life. This is true because in some cases a person does not knowledge the greater things until they are faced with a challenge."And where we have thought to slay another we shall slay ourselves." When a person attempts to tear another down it can be for multiple reasons, but it can be assumed that what they say about that person is really what they think of themselves. One may point attention on another to pull it away from their self’s. When a person brings down another they are truly bringing down themselves. "Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence." This means that when an individual finds that they are losing their self’s, they will truly find who they are and what they are meant for. A person will find their place in this world. This can be true because when an individual is faced with challenges it can show them who they are. “And where we have thought to be alone, we shall be with the entire world.” What Joseph Cambelle meant was that no one person is ever alone. And when an individual expects to be abandoned plenty of people are there to support that individual. All a person has to do is ask for help and they shall receive it. This is almost as if it is saying to have faith in other people along with humanity.
This quote relates to mythology because in myths this is all true. Hero’s appear to always start off finding themselves alone, not realizing all of the help around them. Also the path they are about to fallow has already been taken or attempted to be taken. Myths are created to provide reasoning for things that are hard to understand. Such as death, or where one belongs in this world. Myths give people peace of mind about the things that scare them. Myths also give humanity a sense of wrong of right. This quote sums up many myths there for connecting it reality.

This quote tells the reader everyone is on a journey in life, a very similar journey.
This quote relates to mythology because mythology often tells storys of a hero on a journey in life. The quote is about the journey one must take in life whether a hero or not. This quote is very true, life is a journey that everyone must take, along with challenges. In the end one finds who they truly are.

And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find god. Many think of life as embarking upon a challenging adventure but in retrospect achieve greatness through the process of experience which births growth. And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves. With the intent to harm another person one invites personal destruction. The thought to harm another is archaic as a hungry savage over a beast, yet in our modern world the harm done reflects in our selfish imagery; in an attempt to win a battle we lose the war. Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to center our own existence. It is thought to travel outward to escape life but in the end it comes down to the center of one’s life. And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world. An individual is never really alone in this modern civilized world, yet everyone in a billion human beings views themselves as the center of the universe, a product of the selfish gene.
This is a very powerful quote that I do agree with in the fact that you are never alone and there have been others that have come and gone, and lived on the same path. When it says that hurting others only hurts yourself in the end it really just means that what you say reflects and uncovers those insecurities that are within yourself. Never try to see the bad in life or run away from it because you are never alone and there will be someone that knows exactly what is going on.

As humans, we primarily focus on the outward appearance. How fat or skinny we are, what clothes we wear, how our make up and hair is done. To us, this is what matters in life. Judging others is only human nature, but what Campbell is trying to tell us, is that criticising others is only displaying our own feelings and emotions of our insecurities. This is a deep philisophical thought that I believe is true. This quote has opened up my mind and shown me really what and how life works. It has given me comfort as well as a new found passion and curiosity for mythology.

“And where we had thought to find abomination, we shall find a god. And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves.” The writer of this quote talks of how that many may set out on a noble quest towards their goals of discovering what may be good or bad in the world, only to find that they we backwards all along. Some may seek to find reason for their believed abominations, only to find truth and good in their ways. Others may seek to slay another only to destroy themselves in the process, by continuing onwards blindly without the possibility of discovering the err in their ways and destroying themselves by doing so.
“Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence. And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.” Joseph Campbell speaks of how that many people who may set out to travel and discover the world, but succeed in finding themselves along the way at the center of our own existence. Finally, he speaks of how that people find that they may seek solitude; they can find that they thrive among others that we share this planet with.We are all humans and we all seek to reach our goals in life, for life is too short to live without trying to accomplish what we believe is most important.

The first sentence says, “We have not to even risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us.” This is saying that even the best people in this world have gone and passed on, when Joseph uses the word adventure; he is using it to represent life. Life is an adventure and everybody should live life to the fullest, all the heroes have gone before us and showed us a path. Death will eventually arrive in every one’s life at one point or another so you shouldn’t risk the adventure.
The next two sentences state, “The labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path.” The labyrinth is referring to life’s path. There are so many similarities in people’s lives. Love, hardship, happiness, and sorrow, everyone has a taste of each one. The following sentence “We have only to follow the thread of the hero path” is meaning that the people that have gone on before us have laid down a path or example to follow to help us get through our “adventure” or “labyrinth.”
“And where we had thought to have found an abomination, we shall find a god.” This is the next portion of the quote. When we feel as if we are in a dark and terrible place of disgust and hatred, we will find God. When we think that we are hopeless, we will find God. “And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves.” This is the following sentence. It will not build you to destroy another. This is an example of something that happens very frequently. They try to hide their own insecurities by making others known. It will not help but destroy you and break you down.
“Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to center of our own existence.” When we reach out and push our boundaries we will find who we really are. If you lose yourself in service of others and reach out try new things and have new experiences, it will bring you closer to yourself. You will learn things about yourself you never knew.
“And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.” This is the last part of this quote. This is saying when you are at your lowest and you feel so alone you will realize that there are people everywhere. You will never be alone. You will always have a support, somebody will always be there.
This quote speaks very wise well thought out words. It shares things that are applied to the world. We don’t realize, but we all have a lot in common. What Joseph Campbell says are fears that the whole world have.
I completely agree with every word in this quote. It shines hope in matter that individuals would usually not. It shows a whole new perspective that should be held in the best regards. This quote means hope and wisdom.

An example of symbolism from the quote is ”And when we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.” We often find that we feel alone, sad, depressed, and that no one can see us. Someone once said it doesn’t matter whether they are physically alive or spiritually alive but those that matter are always there. Everywhere a person goes there is someone to lift them up when that person is feeling down. There is someone who often feels like they don’t belong and no one can understand what they are going through and no person could ever understand how hurt that person is. This symbolizes so many things in so many ways of how people’s emotions mix with their problems and trials.
“Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence.” This sentence is talking about how when a person chooses to reach out to others in need they shall find themselves unexpectedly. People often look at themselves and say why can’t you be prettier, or taller, or skinnier but when anyone says that they are bringing themselves down instead of helping themselves. When people go through challenges in life they find that if they keep going and don’t give up that they can accomplish anything and everything. If people could have the courage and strength to take tiny steps forward then they could reach their goals and dreams, or they could overcome the fears and find that they have strength they didn’t know they had. People can find that they are more than they thought they were, prettier in their own ways, and that everybody has their own special traits and qualities to practice and love.
This whole quote symbolizes so many things, like how the paths people go down are known by somebody else who has already gone before. When we get into lots of trouble and there are lives on the line we find that the real only helpful person left is the person we love and treasure the most whether they are dead or living. When a person in life goes through trials and hard times, and serve others we find the inner most beauty about ourselves during the process and learn new things about who we are now and who we are to become. In life when jealousy overcomes pride in one another we find in the end that as we bring other people down we are really just bringing ourselves down along with it. In conclusion anyone can connect their everyday lives with this one quote and everybody knows that as people they are never alone.

The quote also states that, “Where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves.” This is true for today’s audience as well. People go out thinking that they will get revenge on someone, but end up hurting themselves in the process. They can injure themselves morally or physically, both of which can be damaging to that person for the rest of their life. If a person goes as far as to kill another person, they just irreversibly damaged their conscience. They will always have to live with the thought that they had killed another human being, and that they can never fix it.
Lastly, the quote says, “Where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.” This means that even when we as humans are feeling at our lowest, or like no one can help, there is always those people that have gone through the same thing that can help us become better. It can also be thought of in a literal way, in how someone is lost in the forest, or a supermarket. There is always someone out there that is with us in heart. Either way, we are always with someone else who has gone through, or is going through, the same thing.
No matter how we look at it, this quote from The Power of Myth has a lot of extremely important meaning that can help us in our modern lives. We are always walking our own “hero path” in everything that we do and say. We are never alone, and we always have people on our side to back us up.

Mythology is all about heroes and creatures. This quote talks about heroes and how they paved the way for the folks around them. For example once a hero kills off a creature from the underworld the people around are suddenly at peace, and don’t have to give up a huge sacrifice (food, shelter, etc). This quote relates to the perspective of a hero in a common mans eyes, noticing that once they have taken on the inevitable it is not longer impossible, let alone a problem.
The concept of the quote can be seen in many different ways, but the quote is lacking certain aspects. One aspect is love. This quote is great for taking on challenges beyond ones reach, which a prime aspect in mythology. I agree with the concept though. We have all been there cause of the ones before us.
Joseph Cambell’s quote relates to the old tales of mythology along with everyday life.

The next step in the hero’s journey is the call to adventure. Odysseus gets the call to adventure in book five when Zeus sends Hermes to order Calypso to let Odysseus go so he can make the adventure back home to his mortal family. Calypso lets him go but not without trying to persuade him with her fancy food and wine. The message in this book is that no matter how long you have to wait, with hard work and dedication you will get your way.
Odysseus crosses the threshold when he leaves
Calypsos island and decides to go back home to his mortal wife. This shows that he is a loyal man and can resist even the greatest challenges as all heroes do. If you are going to follow the thread of the hero’s path you have to be able to resist challenges and overcome challenges. In the real world when you take that first sip of alcohol you can either overcome the challenge or fall into the addiction.
The next step in the hero’s path is the path of trials, new enemies, friends, challenges, skills and new knowledge. In book eleven an enemy that Odysseus makes is the Cyclopes. The Cyclopes is symbols for a challenge that you create yourself because you are too cocky, when they get into the Cyclopes den they could have just stole the cheese and some sheep and left without having to face the Cyclopes but because of Odysseus’s huberous six of his men get killed and eaten. Although it is difficult for Odysseus to defeat the Cyclopes he overcomes the challenge that he created by outsmarting the Cyclopes and using his sheep to escape.
We have not to even risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us. The labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path. And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god. And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves. Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to center of our own existence. And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.
Explain. What does this quote mean? How does it apply to the study of mythology? Do you agree with the concept? Why or why not? (Your response should be no less than two fully developed paragraphs. Be thoughtful and detail your thinking in your response.)
