Re having read both my picks...I understand, which is why you probably won't vote for either of mine, but the read isn't JUST for us, and will be voted on (and hopefully read) by everybody. It's just our little bully pulpit.

Another book that I have not read but which looks very intriguing is Fingersmith by Sarah Waters.

So sorry to hear that your husband is unwell. I've read both of the books you mention. I agree: 'The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet' is better than 'Cloud Atlas'.
'Fingersmith' is excellent!
