A new feature this month, the MOD group read. No, we're not reading slick 60's fiction (although that's kind of a cool genre) but beginning this month, one of the two group reads is voted on by everybody, but the nominations are ONLY from the mods..and not only that, but mods get up to TWO book picks. The usual rules about year published and quality apply. So Mods, pick two!

Obviously, there's only 5 people who can vote, a max then of 10 books, but somehow I suspect there will be 6. Anyway, here's my two:
The Corrections written by Jonathan Franzen considered by many to be his best book to date, I wouldn't know, since I've never read any, and I'd like to start...and did I mention that Oprah kicked him off her show? And it can't come as a shocker:
Blankets written by Craig Thompson a graphic novel yes, you've gotten tired of hearing me preach that a graphic novel can be art, and doesn't have superheros or tights. I've gotten several people in this group to read it despite it coming short in polls time and time again. I'll try again, because it's the good fight.
Paperboy: A Dysfunctional Novel by Bob ThurberYou all must have seen it coming. It feels important to advance the fine, but unknown writer and the small press.
Just the one nomination this time. Though if it wins you may all be traumatized and never forgive me.
Two books I've not read:An Episode in the Life of a Landscape Painter
by César Aira and
Arthur and George
by Julian Barnes
Sounds good! There's a week for Maggie or Logophile to add their picks if they choose, but it doesn't seem like either will get involved anymore.

It's on my 'to read list' - thanks to your recommendation some time back!

Do we need to consider signing up some more?
well, unless you feel we're falling short in moderation (there's a pun there), otherwise no.Re having read both my picks...I understand, which is why you probably won't vote for either of mine, but the read isn't JUST for us, and will be voted on (and hopefully read) by everybody. It's just our little bully pulpit.

Hi. I am not dead and I have not forgotten. I will think hard over this today. But my husband is ill and I don't have time to be a moderator.Sorry :(
Hi Maggie! As before, we understand you don't have time, but we're delighted to hear from you! If you can think of 1-2 books to nominate here, and/or an additional book to nominate for the open poll (in a different thread) you have until the 8th or so to do so. You can be as involved or as little involved as you feel you have time or inclination to.
This one I have read. It is by David Mitchel so you may wany to save it for later. It is better than Cloud Atlas in my opinion. And I liked Cloud very much. It is The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. I can't recommend enough, although I think it has been recommended (by me) before.Another book that I have not read but which looks very intriguing is Fingersmith by Sarah Waters.
Hallo Maggie,So sorry to hear that your husband is unwell. I've read both of the books you mention. I agree: 'The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet' is better than 'Cloud Atlas'.
'Fingersmith' is excellent!
I think this new mod pick is fascinating, and it will be interesting to see what the general members vote for, and indeed how many will vote on this poll at all. I hope everybody votes on both though.
