Joel (joelevard) Fiona, if you want to get rid of anything, I'll take and Diana Wynne Jones off your hands. ;)

Jennifer | 212 comments i got 4 books, plus a nook for my birthday, but since they were gifts that doesnt really count as falling off the wagon, does it? please say it doesnt count!

message 1304: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) 15 books in 3 days?? O_O

message 1305: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) Wow! I fit right in with everyone! I was trying to read through this thread, but there was just too many pages/discussions/etc.

However, the jist I got was that ooooh yeah, I fit!! I too buy way too many books, and have way too many on hand to read. I have a "Friends of the Library" bag. It is filled with bought books to read, and then there is a stack of books next to the bag (these are a combo of bought and library books).

I was going to buy another library bag, but thought this would only perpetuate the problem as then I'd have space to add more books. It's best if my books are kept out in the open, therefore I feel a sense of accountability.

However, I will admit, this does not always stop me. (blushing).

message 1306: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 92 comments I can't buy any new books either. My TBR list is too long.

message 1307: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 92 comments The power that be are keeping my ban in place. Linger hasn't come out in a format my eReader will take yet.
One of the reasons I didn't buy a Kindle is because I didn't want to be tied to getting my books from just Amazon. I didn't buy a Nook either because it's tied to Barnes and Noble. But guess what? Only Amazon and Barnes and Noble are offering the book in ebook format right now. If you have their little gadget, you're good to go. If you didn't succumb to buying their special gadget, you have to wait a while. It's like waiting for a movie to come out on DVD.

message 1308: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Irene, the Nook actually supports ePub, PDB and PDF formats, and will support ebooks from other sources than just through BN - that's one of the things that I looked at when I first started drooling over it. I haven't purchased yet though. I think for my birthday! :D

message 1309: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) (Unless I find something better... heheh)

message 1310: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I broke my ban this weekend at the Pequot Library Sale. I said I was so I don't feel so guilty. I bought 19 books in two trips. So that's it I'm done and back on the ban until September. My library is having a sale this weekend and I'm not even going to drive in the vicinity for fear of making a stop. hehehe.

message 1311: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) I definitely need to stop buying books... I have acquired almost two dozen books since I graduated from college. My bookcase is double-stacked, my DVD case has a shelf of books, and my old VHS case is now going to house books, as well. I have four more books on their way here that I bought last week, and I keep entering giveaways (although I have no problem with that, I'm just out of space).

Must. Not. Buy. More. Books.

message 1312: by Brandon (new)

Brandon (brandonsears) I've only got 11 books on my shelf waiting to be read. I thought I had a lot - I feel much better now!

I think I was 5 last time my TBR list contained only 11 books.
That is amazing!

message 1314: by Becky (last edited Aug 04, 2010 10:17AM) (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) So I have decided that I'm not going to buy any new books unless I HAVE TO HAVE IT. And I won't just justify that every book is a NEED IT book either. LOL

I will still accept for-review books and freebies though... I won't pass those up!! :)

I currently have 213 (at last count) and with one on the way (Watchmen - which I got for free through GR Swap), that's 214. *sigh*

I need to get busy reading my owned books!!

message 1315: by Julie (new)

Julie | 54 comments seeing that everyone has this problem and that someone with eleven isnt a problem makes me feel great. i never let myself have over ten books laying around. once i get to having 2 left i go and buy another 7 or 8 and repeat.

message 1316: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Hehe... 11. I would settle for double digits... or heck even triple digits starting with a 1! I'm at 213!

*should be reading*

On the one hand I am so jealous of only 11 books.
On the other hand when I think about only 11 books I get this tight panicky feeling in the center of my chest .......

message 1318: by Julie (new)

Julie | 54 comments I'm starting college in a few weeks.. not having that much money to spend helps. when i go out i only bring enoguh money to get what i want.. not extra. that way i save it.. and it helps with diets too, no extra foods. It hasnt been that hard for me to keep up with it. I think i only slipped once.

message 1321: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I've been able to get rid of a few myself and I have some to mail out still to friends. I did acquire about 19 books thanks to the book sale last month, so I actually broke even in the amount of books I have. I've set up a couple of challenges for myself which has really helped me to get through my piles. I'm still not buying though...until Mockingjay comes out which I'm thinking of pre-ordering.

message 1322: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I know!!! Especially since I've been waiting a whole year for it. I'm glad someone understands.

message 1323: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 326 comments Most of my TBR books on my home shelf are solely due to garage sales. Many are in brand new condition! Then I goofingly added 5 more to the pile by going to the bookstore or picking up this tiny book at a gift shop. Boy does it add up!!

Once I finish My Life in France, I have to decide what next to read to hopefully stave my yearning to buy MORE books.

When's Mockingbird out again? I have to read Catching Fire just before it's released but I purposely am timing it so I barely have any wait at all to leap across that cliffhanger!!

Fiona, it sounds like you need a bookstore buddy. Kinda like how AA have buddies. Your BB will assist you in stepping away from the bookshelf and nudge you BACK to the library. Deep breaths!

...yeah right. I barely am able to do that myself! Ahaha!

message 1324: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 212 comments Tanja, Mockingjay gets released 8-24

message 1325: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 326 comments I'm afraid so, Fiona. A coworker of mine informed me of a little bookshop near the Eastern Market that has extra discounts. UH OH!!

And woo! Thanks Jennifer. That'll be my ONE permitted purchase. Likely. Possibly. Hopefully?

message 1326: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 212 comments I pre-ordered it on my nook. Now I'm just desperately awaiting its download!

message 1327: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) I don't see how people can afford to buy hardback books... guh. I'm keeping myself from reading Hunger Games until Catching Fire is out in paperback, which scholastic's site claims will be September 7. Hopefully by then I'll have a job so I can actually buy it.

message 1328: by Choco (new)

Choco I have decided to read all the books (ebooks not included) I own before Christmas and buy a kindle as a reward, a Christmas present for myself! I'm allowed to buy books if I want to (like Mockingjay!!), but the rule I've created for myself is not to have a single unread book on my bookshelf on the first of December.
See how it goes..

message 1329: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) Wow! I always love these addiction type threads. They help me realize that it's not a problem. Well, okay, it is, but I'm not alone in the problem. (ha ha).

I too have an issue with books starting to stockpile in my house. I will buy books I want to read, are on my list of books to read (at home, not on Goodreads), and are book club reads.

I also use the library as much as possible. However, my library just never seems to have but 1 or 2 titles that I'm looking for. Yes, there's that interlibrary loan, but that requires effort to ask. (ha ha). It just seems so much easier to go to the Used book store, or B&N, or online, etc.

Though I do have a way of limiting myself. It's an allowance of $40. All books I buy for a month have to fit in the $40. Do I stick to it 100%? Sigh, not every month, but for the most part yes. I prioritize: Look to the library first, book club reads, authors I really want to read, and then titles I have on my TBR (at home) list.

message 1330: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 212 comments AAHH! I need an intervention! I just downloaded 19 books for my nook! but, they were all free books, so thats not AS bad, right?

message 1331: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) Jennifer, I see no problem with free books.

Then again, the free books at the bookcrossing table at the main library on-campus was the entire reason I went from having maybe 20 or 30 books in my apartment to having over 100 books in my apartment.

But with your nook, you're not spending money OR taking up space when you download free books, so even though I still have issues with eReaders that I don't see getting resolved any time soon, I think it's fabulous for you.

Free books are my entire problem.
Being a SAHM we have been on a tight budget forever so I rarely buy books (until recently one a month was a luxury). But I must have this reputation as a bookworm because everyone gives me books.
Never mind about the books passed on by friends, when friends pass on they leave me their books! Whole boxes full which I can't resist.
My mother doesn't dare throw out a book without my approval and I have about 100 books I inherited from my grandmother.

Now I have discovered book blog giveaways and bookmooch. Sometimes I get a little panicked but I shall just have to live long in order to read them all :0)

Yeah, the free books at bookcrossing were an issue for me, since I grabbed everything that looked vaguely interesting. Then the library started just putting out free books that weren't there through bookcrossing. I got some good ones from that, too. Ended up having to bring two large bags full of books back when I moved.

As I said, for Jennifer, free books on her eReader does not seem like a problem to me. They're free, so she didn't spend money, and they're eBooks, so she didn't have to find a place to put them.

Priscilla | 6 comments I love these threads..Collecting books is agood thing right?? I am at the strat of book-a-holic problem.
I used to just read a book and take back to the library or buy books at christmas fairs etc. Now I am ordering up to 5 books at a time at the library, every week, two many to read at once! and have to take some back and then re-order and now I can resist picking up books a the charity shop where I work!

I keep thinking 'its ok only a few books here and there' ..But is this the start?? I have a feeling I am getting worse..lol I just think Oh I have seen that on bookreads or on the tv, and home it goes.lol ;)

Shona (anovelobsession) What a fun thread! I've just enjoyed going back and reading all the posts. I've been trying to put a hold on buying books but haven't been doing well. However, you all have motivated me to set a lofty goal - I will not buy any more books until Christmas. I have plenty in the house to keep me busy for a couple of years so there is no chance of running out of things to read....

Thank you, Jo!
I've got only 11 books to go now, but some of them are very 'meaty' books.
Besides this now I have a big problem.. Completely out of nowhere my auntie gave me some money, which will easily cover the price of a kindle (and its cover)!!
I am tempted to preorder the new kindle, but then I might not finish the 11 books I've got. This is going to be a test of my will power!

Kristopher | 14 comments Jo,

I feel that way about amazon.com in general. They have an iPhone app and are generous enough to remember my billing information, which makes for a dangerous combination. I do, however, still order real books, so I have the problem of figuring out where to put them.

Kristopher.

The Barnes & Noble free eBooks are a weakness because of this. I don't even like eBooks, but these are free so I don't mind.

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments ok, I have said this once before but I mean it now. LOL!

I will buy no more books!
2 exceptions
1- if I get a gift certificate for my b-day or Christmas.
2- I am going to buy Mockingjay in the next week. After that no more.

I have so many books in my house; My husband and kids tease me about it and say I can't read them all before I die. LOL

message 1348: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Isn't that an awful thought...not being able to read all your books before you die?? lol

I'm doing the September Book Ban with Fi. My guidelines are:
1. No buying books for the month of Sept.
2. No borrowing, looking at or going into the library. Unfortunately, I have to pass by it on my way to work :/
3. Read at least 8 of my own books

Tomorrow or sometime this week I'm going to stock up buy Mockingjay and maybe a few others that I've been wanting since I haven't bought any in August. Just a last treat, you know?

message 1349: by Alisha Marie (last edited Aug 23, 2010 10:03AM) (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I'll try to abstain after my library's book sale on September 11. I have 400 physical books (not counting e-books) and you would not believe how hard it is to get that number down. I'm reading the books, but then one comes in from PBS or a FirstReads win or I forget to catalogue one (this happened with A Clockwork Orange which I've owned for months yet found again yesterday) which makes me go right back up to 400 no matter how hard I try to get the number down!

message 1350: by Choco (new)
