Kandice Awwwwww, I really, really love you!!!! (I'm a suck up AND a sucker!)

message 1052: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) this thread is always feeling the love :)

*hugs all around*

message 1053: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) course, that "lovely face" part makes it sound like I was flirting...

well, unless you have a problem with it I guess I was ;)

message 1054: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Do you suppose this is the atmosphere at AA or NA meetings as opposed to BA (books annonymous)?

message 1055: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I hope not, I am a failure :\

message 1056: by Kandice (new)

Kandice No, no, no, not the measure of success! The love, support and understanding!!!!!

message 1057: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) well I guess we're here because we chose to be since we like each other and like books too much

in AA and such they band together because they NEED each other...

...I'm done. I don't know where this thought process is trying to lead.

message 1061: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (catchtigers) | 4 comments This is actually my summer project! I have piles upon piles of books that I am planning to read this summer, I think it is something like 120 books. That being said

"I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my to-be-read pile is looking more respectable and I must read the books I already own!"

We should really start a support group of finishing to-read books!

message 1062: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments Yeah, I was all fine in abstaining until I found out the the local library is having a friends of the library sale next week. Fifty cents for mass market paperbacks and $1 for hardcovers and trade paperbacks. So, I'll be abstaining after that (at least until November when the next friends of the library sale comes).

message 1063: by JSou (new)

JSou I'm still fighting the urge to go book shopping. I haven't bought any since April 1st. Though I did receive some in the mail, but I ordered them before I started my book ban. So that doesn't really count, right? :)

message 1064: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Jessica you're planning to read 120 books THIS SUMMER?? Am I reading that right? Go you!

message 1065: by Rose (new)

Rose (roseo) Kandice wrote: "Do you suppose this is the atmosphere at AA or NA meetings as opposed to BA (books annonymous)?"

AA motto: One day at a time.

BA motto: One book at a time. :D

BA serenity prayer:

...grant me the serenity to accept the books I already own, courage to not buy any more......

message 1066: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Well said Rose! :)

message 1067: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (schaubchick) | 138 comments How am I supposed to abstain from book-buying when I get 2 gift cards to Barnes & Noble?!? That's like putting chocolate in my sons' mouth and telling them "don't eat the chocolate"! I got the giftcards last night - already used them today, bought 5 new books (though, I've already read two of them, I just bought them so I would have the complete series!).

I'll start over next month.

message 1068: by JSou (new)

JSou Oooh Stacey, just think, if you start over next month, you'll have the rest of this month to stock up on more books! Hee hee...what series did you get?

message 1069: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (schaubchick) | 138 comments Jessica wrote: "Oooh Stacey, just think, if you start over next month, you'll have the rest of this month to stock up on more books! Hee hee...what series did you get?"

It was just the last two books in Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire (Sookie Stackhouse) Series. I'm waiting for the new one to come out in May...does it count if I pre-order the book and pay for it in April? ;)

What was funny was the bookseller's face: I bought those two books, along with The House of Mirth (Edith Wharton), Mansfield Park (Austen) and Lady Susan, The Watsons and Sanditon (also by Austen). Just an odd combination - 2 vamp books and 3 classics.

message 1070: by Karena (new)

Karena (tennis_diva) OK, I'll bite. ^^^^^ :^>

"I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my to-be-read pile is looking more respectable and I must read the books I already own!"

I have already taken this pledge on my own a couple of years ago, but, as I work in a bookstore...it is just pure torture. Though...I do borrow books...I will not buy, I will not buy, I will not buy...

HA! I don't really eat chocolate and use index cards for bookmarks. When I go into a bookstore I think my eyes glaze over & I go into a trance ;) Atleast that what my sister tells me. Oh, well. It's over.

message 1076: by JSou (new)

JSou Well, I made it 13 days. Today I caved and bought two at the thrift store. They were 50 cents each and I couldn't resist. I got The Loop by Nicholas Evans, and another novel called The 19th Wife. Both were in great condition!

I feel just a little guilty, but it felt SO good walking out of the store with new books!

jessica, how great that you got The loop. he is one of my favourite writers and that is my faviurite of his books. Have you read any of his other books?

message 1078: by JSou (new)

JSou Jeane, I haven't read any other Nicholas Evans before. I know just since joing TNBBC I've heard quite a few people say how good The Loop was. I just HAD to pick it up when I saw it! That's why I love it here so much...I'm getting to read books I never would've even thought to pick up before!

message 1079: by JSou (new)

JSou You're comments were actually some of the ones I read about The Loop, Fiona! :) I was so excited when I found it in the shop, and for so cheap! I just had to get it. Though I should've known I would slip on my book ban just walking in there. I'm so bad!

Oh well, today is a new day and "I WILL NOT BUY ANYMORE BOOKS..." (God, give me strength!!!) :)

message 1080: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Ahh, it's alright Jessica, Fiona will forgive all book-ban slips as long as the book that broke the ban is one that she recommends!

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments Is it terrible that I'm completely looking forward to the library sale on Saturday just a mere two weeks after I said that I was abstaining? I can't help it. After Saturday, I promise that I'll abstain until November (the next library sale) or at least I'll really try.

message 1084: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Don't worry about it Alisha, we'll forgive you...

(Get Duma Key if you can. It's great! The audiobook was fantastic...)

message 1085: by JSou (new)

JSou Oh no...I just found out there's going to be the massive once a year Friends of the Library Sale in Phoenix. It's not for two weeks, but I'm already daydreaming about it!

We're allowed a slip-up every couple of weeks aren't we???

message 1086: by Alisha Marie (last edited Apr 15, 2009 02:20PM) (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments Becky, I already have Duma Key. Picked it up in hardcover at the thrift store for two bucks. Unfortunately, it's in Large Print, but for the price, I really couldn't just not pick it up.

Mine has a sale on Saturday as well!!

message 1089: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) my library's sale is on Fiona's birthday..so I'm going to get myself a present in honor of her ;)

message 1090: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I think that's fair. Give her a "Fiona approved list".

message 1091: by JSou (new)

JSou With so many library sales coming up, I think we all deserve a splurge just to reward ourselves for at least TRYING to not buy books, don't you? :D

message 1092: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You're right Alisha... I remember we talked about you moving it up your TBR but I forgot you already owned it. *blush*

I went to B&N today...... And didn't buy a single book! I'm still doing good in that respect!

message 1093: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I am incredibly proud! *wipes small tear* ;*)

message 1094: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) It was nice just browsing... I got a coffee and wandered around for a while. *sigh* I saw that they had From Dead to Worse in paperback now, just in time for Book 9 to come out. It stuck to my hand for a minute, but I am a forward-thinker and brought along the crowbar and got it unstuck. ;)

message 1095: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments No worries, Becky. :) I'm sure it's pretty hard to keep up with your own TBR list let alone someone else's.

I seriously don't know how you do it. I think abstaining would be hard enough, but I would never be able to walk into a bookstore, browse, and then come out with nothing. That's how I ended up wasting $42 on five books (I had time to kill and was "browsing" in B&N). That's a lot for someone who usually buys 8 or 9 books for about 20 bucks in thrift stores.

message 1096: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I know what you mean Alisha, and I think that is my secret. I won't buy books in B&N unless I use a gift-card (which I have but conveniently leave at home) or unless it's a really good deal.

I am a total thrift-store addict though. I stay very far away from those now, because I know that I will NOT be able to avoid buying a book if I see it there. It might not be there when I come back, so I have to get it now, now, NOW! LOL. At least with B&N or Amazon they will order out of stock books, so there's no urgency there.

message 1097: by Southernbelle0326 (new)

Southernbelle0326 | 12 comments I have actually succeeded in this area once before when my co-workers stated that I was on book restriction and I could only read the books that I had in my possession for 3 months. It was a tough 3 months let me tell you. I did it! One of the proudest moments in my life....lol. So I have decided to do it again, but, not for that long hopefully. We shall see. I have vowed to myself that I will read 50 books before I buy new ones. Period. So far, I am standing at 11. Going on 12.

It is a hard thing to do when you love to buy books. I have literally used my last $5 to buy a book not once but several times. You all who have made the commitment to do this, I have faith in you. You can do it and I am living proof! I had to find an outlet to keep from going through "withdrawals" and I found that I liked cross-stitching. So I did that for a month or so until the "feeling" eased off.

You can do it, I am rooting for each and everyone of you!

message 1098: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 157 comments Let me see if I can go for 3 months. I wonder...
Today, I just got a book in the mail & 2 books from Half Price Books. Can you believe I've never been in that store? I couldn't any of the books that I was looking for. I did find 2 books from some of the authors that I've read and liked though.
