Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Well, there are two colleges within walking distance of where I live... I could hire some algebra genius to give me the answers and then I could buy my books!

message 802: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker There's definitely more self-control involved when you don't have the thing preventing the buying...

message 803: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) *grumble at Fiona*

Lori, I can't imagine that installing a Purchase Preventer would make much financial sense for retailers... Haha!

message 804: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker True. I misread Esther's comment. I thought there already was a google application that you could install that would make you do the math problems.

message 805: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Oh! Haha... That would not be very cool. I'd never be able to buy anything online ever again. (Well maybe, but it's not likely!)

message 806: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I bet you could find some cute stranger off the street...

Elizabeth (Alaska) I could do the math problems, but don't give me a picture of something mechanical and make me tell you how its supposed to work or how its supposed to go together. I'm not good with pictures of anything - at all!!! (But I'm good with maps, can't explain that one.)

There is a Gmail app 'Mail goggles' but it is to prevent you sending embarrassing emails when you are non compos mentis, due to sleep deprivation or inebriation.

message 809: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Gotcha. That's a good invention though. Too bad cell phone companies haven't worked out one on texting.

Or "Drunk Dialling".

message 811: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Exactly. I've never drunk dialed before. But I suspect that, of the many times he's called or texted me since we broke up, my ex has been under the influence of something.

message 812: by Kim (new)

Kim (catmommie) We just came back from B&N and I didn't buy anything, just dh bought a couple of magazines. That's my second trip there in a month and didn't buy anything but two cookbooks the last time. I did buy a magazine, Beading 101, at Joann's, but that doesn't really count...does it??

That was tough, but I kept thinking...I have no room...they're overtaking our bedroom!!

message 813: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Mar 28, 2009 08:03PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Ok, everyone. I can't decide if I should feel deprived that we don't have a really good Borders or Barnes & Noble, plus some good used book stores, or if I should feel really lucky. We only have a tiny Waldenbooks and a very small independent bookstore that caters mostly to tourists, but does have a half dozen fiction shelves.

message 814: by Kim (last edited Mar 28, 2009 08:11PM) (new)

Kim (catmommie) hmmm. I would say deprived, but there are always church fairs, flea markets, tag sales, ebay, Amazon...you can run but you can't hide.

I never buy a book at full price!! LOL

B&N opened up a superstore last year, it's 20 minutes away. Borders is 20 minutes away in the other direction. There's half a dozen Walmarts, two BJ's, Sam's Club, and two malls also under a half-hour. No wonder CT is called the richest state...all we do is shop up here.

message 815: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments Hah, Kim, I completely agree. I'm from CT also and there is definitely no shortage of bookstores here. I also rarely shop at B&N or Borders. I tend to get my books used. So, I'd have to have a really good coupon or there has to be a kicka** sale going on for me to shop there.

message 816: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (manchesterunited) I read four books this week and did not buy any.

message 817: by Kevin (last edited Mar 29, 2009 08:00PM) (new)

Kevin (manchesterunited) OK, I lied! I am pathetic. I actually bought eight books...but I received a great discount!
Help me!!

message 818: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Haha! Well... that's only 2 purchases per book read. That's progress right? (Assuming you used to have a greater purchase-to-read ratio...)

You just need to work on the not buying part. *nods encouragingly*

message 819: by Kim (new)

Kim (catmommie) that's another reason for buying books off the BN bargain table or used books sources...can't pass up a bargain. I buy books like most women buy shoes. LOL

message 820: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'd go barefoot to buy books.

Thanks for the encouragement! I really have to work on this one.
Happy Reading!

Kevin (manchesterunited) Becky wrote: "I'd go barefoot to buy books. "

Let's be honest...I would sell my wife's shoes to buy books! :)

message 823: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Watch out Kevin, that's a two-way street! You might both be barefoot pretty soon!

lol!

Esther (eshchory) | 575 comments Yesterday I vicariously enjoyed book buying through my daughter. She received a book token for her Bat Mitzvah and I helped her chose and buy the book.

I feel totally virtuous as there is no chance I will read the book - She reads in Hebrew while I prefer English.

message 826: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I bought two books from Amazon this weekend, as well as a CD and a DVD. When I first made the purchase, I was buying a less expensive CD, so I picked out the book to get free shipping. But then I changed to a more expensive CD. The other book was just a good deal. I don't feel bad though because I made it almost 2 months without buying ANYTHING. I've been reading a lot more books too. Plus I am about to get 3 from PBSwap (I love that site!)

message 827: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I went to Borders this weekend and purchased only one book, which was my plan. I went armed with their coupon which was receive 40% of a book with a purchase of $20, but my purchase was under and I didn't get anything else. I also donated about 10 books to the library this weekend. Even though I have room now to add books I'm resisting. Oh and I read two of my own book this past week. So I'm on a roll. :-)

message 828: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) What did you guys buy? I want to know so that I can live vicariously through you two as Esther did through her daughter!

Kandice and I traded books, and she sent me The Hunger Games, which I am DYING to read now! (WHY, why am I not done with Roots yet??)

message 829: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I bought The Good Earth and Provence A-Z. As far as the CD and movie--a Judy Garland 3-disc collection and Cruel Intentions.

message 830: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) It's good so far... I'm about 1/2 done with it... I'm taking it with me to the gym tonight so that I can read while I'm on the treadmill or the bike since I'd like to finish it before April!

message 831: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Roots is another one I have re-read over 10 times. I think I have a problem;) Good thing I'm not into drugs, huh?

I can't wait for you to read Hunger Games Becky!!!!

message 832: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Me either! Starting it as soon as I finish Roots... I'm so happy you chose that one for me Kandice, you have no idea! :D

message 833: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I'm excited to read the Hunger Games too! It might be next...

message 835: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) My birthday's in 6 months too... We'll do it together Allison!

message 837: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I will continue to cheer you girls on, but being the realist I am, will not be torturing myself ;)

Allsion, you really need to read Roots. I think every single American should read Roots!!!! Every single one!

message 839: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Hey Becky...do you want the Gemma Doyle trilogy? I'm about to give them away...I'll send them to you if you want 'em.

message 840: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) *gasp* YES Allison!!!

message 841: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) All 3 of them? Message me your address and I'll UPS them to you.

message 842: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Wow... You guys are like my new bestest best friends!

message 843: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I was first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wanna fight over Becky, Allison? LOL

message 844: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) lol...I'd just as soon spend a few bucks and give them to somebody I "know" then give them to a trashy thrift store that will sell them for $2.

message 845: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I have room in my heart for the both of you... Unlike the Grinch, my heart is three sizes too big, so I can fit lots of people in there! (But only if they deserve it, and you guys DO!) :)

message 846: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Kandice wrote: "I was first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wanna fight over Becky, Allison? LOL"

message 847: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) besides, I just butter up you guys with cast offs until I see something you have that I want and then...BAM! You're stuck sending it to me.

LOL...totally kidding.

message 848: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I have no problem with that Allison... Your cast offs are my treasures! :)

And you guys are ALL my favorites- I can't pick just one of you, I love you all!

message 849: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) oh Becky...FYI, I got AGATB and Rebel Angels both off BookMooch, so they're used, but in good condition, and paperback. I bought The Sweet Far Thing new hardback...so its not a matching set.

message 850: by Kandice (new)
