Ich, you're almost into double digit book-ban success!! I'm so proud! I'm up to day 56 myself, but I'm still coveting "A Thousand Splendid Suns"! *sigh* Only 79 books or 309 days to go. I better get reading!
Thanks. I feel great. I haven't even stopped to try to convince myself of some goal after which I can buy a book or something. I guess I don't need it yet. So far, the accomplishment has been enough reward. We'll see if it lasts. Good for you on the 56! I understand about ATSS, but hang in there!
Yeah, I thought I better get it read since the movie comes out in a little over a week. Plus, it's LONG past time I read it anyway.
I can't wait to see the movie. A little bummed the Black Ship story will be left out, but I can wait for the DVD for that.
Having a really hard time because some people have been talking about a book and I really want to buy it now. But I think I might just ask my mom to buy it for me for Easter. I mean, my ban is really on me spending my own money until I read some of the books I already have. I'm allowed to get books as gifts or from a gift certificate (if I get one).

Stay strong Lori. If she buys it for you, you have my full encouragement to go ahead and read it. =-P
Oh, and also...
THIS IS DAY TEN
Double digits! WOOT!
Thanks Ichaerus. I'm going to send her an email saying if she wants to get it for me, I can email her a 25% off coupon, making the book $9.
Ich-Thanks for the info. I didn't realize they were thinking of releasing it theatrically. I thought it was only going to be an option on the DVD. I also assumed they would end up charging a good deal more for that version!
It's Jessica Z. And my school library doesn't really get new books, so they don't have it. But at least I already have that argument taken care of when my mom suggests I check it out of the library.
Lori wrote: "It's Jessica Z. And my school library doesn't really get new books, so they don't have it. But at least I already have that argument taken care of when my mom suggests I check it out of the library."Have you asked the library if they can possibly get the book from a different library? Most libraries have that sort of exchange program. I know Oklahoma State does.
I know this doesn't do much for the argument against your mom, but still. :)
I hadn't really thought about that. The in know that with the exchange thing you don't get to keep it for very long and at OSU, since I'm in the Honors College, I get to keep books as long as grad students do, which I'd probably need to read the book. I brought it up last night with my mom and she didn't start arguing with me on it, so that sounds promising.
Lori wrote: "I just want to announce to everyone in the thread that Becky is now my bestest friend ever because she's sending me The Reader.":-))))) I think I will remember SuzieR for the rest of my life to have given me Jonathan Strange...I loved it!
I never would ahve thought it would feel so normal and good to send books to people I don't know face to face....but it feels like I really know so many people on here.
Linda wrote: "I feel so lucky to have the two-story city library across the street from my work so I can visit on my breaks :)"I am sooo 'lucky' to have two verry busy weeks behind me at work so I couldn;t find out how the bookstore at 900metres from work is.....I am kind of afraid I would go and come back too late to work. I do have a long one hour lunch break but when I am in bookshos i seem to forget about the world around me...
I'm glad that you really liked JS&MN, Jeane... I'm almost 1/2 done with it, and while I'm liking it (there are quite a few spots that had me laughing out loud) I wish the pace would pick up a little. I'm still hopeful that I will love it though!
Fiona wrote: "It has been just under a month since my last fall from grace. YAY!"Okay Fiona, for once a very serious message to you: congratulations!
Jeane, I know what you mean. I love the thought of giving someone a book or getting one from someone because of how strongly books can affect people. It's like giving someone a piece of themselves that has always been missing because even if someone hates a book, it affects them.And...let's see...it's been about two weeks since my last purchase. One if you count the book I bought with the 40% off coupon (which is allowed with my rules). I am trying to con my mom into buying my Jessica Z and 90 Minutes with God for Easter, but that also goes with my rules. I just can't spend MY money on them; no rules about spending someone else's.
Looks like my con worked. I think she's buying me both of them, which means I'm going on 2 weeks of not buying anything. Woo-hoo. Too bad I haven't read like 3 books in that time though.
That's cheating Lori! LOL The point is to not acquire new books at all until you've read the ones you already have! ...I mean... except of course the one that I sent you *blush*
It's a little hard to scold when you are enabling! In both of you defense, I know hwo great it feels to send someone a book they really want, you really enjoyed and would love to share! *wink*
My book ban was more of a financial issue than anything. And it will be nice to get through (and get rid of) some books.
Aw, I've just been busy and I'm scared of how busy it is here. It overwhelms me. I shall try to keep on top of things.
I know what you mean Lori, I am really looking forward to lowering my pile by 28 thanks to the spring challenge... now if only I could finish JS&MN. 300 pages to go.
I am so jealous that you have time to read that many books! I just can't do it with school. Sometimes I feel like a weenie complaining about how much homework I have, but I never seem to get it all done.
You know, I'm kind of curious to know what I would do without an enormous tbr pile. I stand in awe of the people who just buy books or check them out as they read them and have no standing owned and tbr pile.
I understand Becky's reasoning, but don't think it should count if you get a book free. Just saying...
Well! MY reasoning is so that my TBR pile actually decreases... Of course, the money I'm saving is a nice bonus too. I mean, I promised to avoid acquiring books by any means until you've reduced Mt. TBR, so I haven't. (And I'm holding all of you guys to the same standard!) That's all I'm saying! ;)
*sigh* That last post looks terrible, when I think of what I am about to post... I've already posted this for the benefit of Fiona's poor nerves, but I figured I'd better come clean to the group at large as well, so that my fall from the pedestal is properly noted, lol!
From what I posted in Fiona's reading goal thread:
"I finally cracked... sort of. I had sent a book off to my GR friend Eric (also of TNBBC) and he is sending me back "Slaughterhouse 5" by Kurt Vonnegut. So technically I will have acquired a new book and will have broken my promise to myself... Kind of. I don't plan on reading it, or even opening it until my current list is done though.
But now you know that even I am not perfect! But I couldn't pass it up when its a return of a favor, and I couldn't ask him to keep it until 2010 either, lol."
Again-Becky, you have earned a Mulligan! The book you git is very good, but of course it will keep. Like you said, you have to accept when someone's offering.
That's true... I just would have felt guilty if I didn't say something about it, since I've been like the freakin' Mother Hen all over this thread! LOL So, my conscience is clean, although my iron-clad book ban has been seriously dented!
Umm... well, I have a really small T.V. screen inside the helmet of my book-ban armor, and on the outside, there is a camera that can be moved into different angles and stuff. I control it by voice-command and the image appears on my helmet-screen. Reading this way has many benefits, not least of which is the fact that the cameras are night-vision, so I can read in the dark.
But turning pages is kind of hard wearing the gauntlets...
