Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Very good point Jeane! :)

message 602: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm all for just reading several and then buying more. Or maybe give yourself a reward of one book every 6 months until you get done.

message 603: by Jill (new)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments I have to say that I envy those of you who have mostly fiction to read. Most of the books on my TBR list are non-fiction. Mostly history and science. Not the lightest of reading material.

message 604: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) ugggggh. I want to go to the thrift store!! But I know I shouldn't.

I went and got a haircut this morning, and I passed Goodwill...and it was nice and shiny (well, actually rather dingy)...*sigh*

Its only 9:30. I bet I end up going.

message 605: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Good luck Allison! I'm about to go to Borders and I have to only buy one book. It's between the first book in the Rome series, Band of Brothers, and a bigger copy of The Fountainhead (because I don't like mass market books).

message 606: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Good ideas.. I may manage setting some smaller goals for myself. I am so overwhelmed by the books and it will take me atleast 4 years to get through, but for every twenty books I can buy one, or get one from the library, so I can give it back is reasonable. Ok.. breathing-a-little-more-easy...

message 607: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Lori, you'll have to tell me what you got!

I went to Goodwill....but it was pretty much cleaned out. I did score a couple: You Suck and How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents.

I'm pretty excited about finding You Suck though, because I've been wanting to read a Christopher Moore.

message 608: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Allison... I hate to burst your bubble, but You Suck is the sequel to Bloodsucking Fiends... :\

message 609: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) AUGH.

...oh well, the library has Bloodsucking Fiends. :-D

message 610: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I went to Borders and I bought The First Man in Rome. I was tempted to buy the second book as well, but I decided I should wait (because I think it will take me so long to get through the first one that I wouldn't be able to return the second if I decided not to pursue the series). I was also tempted to buy them out of order, because they seemed like individually contained books, though they went chronologically through time.

I am very proud of myself for my frugality and patience.

Let me know how it goes!!!

message 612: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I knew it would be difficult....we went to the centre and I thought we would only go in Eason to buy my boyfriend a magazine. But we went in another one at the beginning and I was looking for the rome serie but couldn't find any in that shop. But then I saw The Secret Life of Bees. I have tried to get it at the library but don't find it and it was ten euros.....bad boyfriend said to buy it ebcause of all the reasons that I decided not to buy books for now. In the end I bought it. When we went in Eason I saw the books of the rome serie......only 12 euro each. If I wouldn't ahve bought the other one I am sure I would already be reading one of the rome serie right now!

I am affraid they will get lsot. I thought about that to get my books now and then one from Belgium but I am afraid it will get lost and I wouldn't manage that.

message 617: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey folks, i fell off the wagon. my local library opened their book store and sold all hardbacks for $1 and all paperbacks for $.50. i own 32 new books. i am supremely happy! haha!!

Liz (hissheep) Joanna wrote: "I actually considered not purchasing more books and tried to go to my local library. They didn't have a single thing I was interested in. (Well, at the moment at any rate.) I then tried to order ..."

Joanna, I would say that your local library and inter-library loan system is not as good as you think; unless, of course, you have a very unusual taste in what you like to read! ;o) I very seldom have trouble finding what I want. The only problem I have is that they all seem to come at the same time!

I suppose you could look at it like this, Alisha, you read three, bought nine, which means you added only six to your original count? Guess we have to blame this all on winter doldrums???

NO NO - the other way around... read nine purchase 3!!

Like I should talk...

message 626: by Jill (new)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments For the record, I fell off the wagon and bought Chuck Klosterman's Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto. Apparently it's postmodernism through the lens of popular cultural phenomenons like The Real World and the whole Lakers vs. Celtics rivalry of the '80s.

message 627: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Fiona, that should be 1000 lines per book bought.

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona wrote: "We need to find suitable punishments for these dissenters.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You can't use copy & paste though. Must be handwritten.

message 631: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments So, I broke...but it's not my fault! My DH got me a GC to Borders for Valentine's Day. I spent it, and I only went $6 over...

So that's not my fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 632: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Gift cards are no excuse-- I'm sitting on a $100 GC for B&N! It's burning my butt, but I haven't spent it yet!

message 633: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I ended up using my amazon gift card for new games, just got a Wii.. this way it wasn't taunting me anymore. I walked through the book section at target and walked out victorious... just don't put me in a book store.

message 634: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Well, I'm not literally sitting on it. It's in a little cup on my desk at home, so when I am out, the temptation is not there. Granted, I could spend real money, but somehow, I've managed to talk myself out of buying impulse books whenever I see them.

I just add them to my "to get post book ban" shelf. Oddly enough, that makes me feel better because I know I won't forget them when I'm able to acquire again.

message 635: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) They will not be all out of print. But don't worry, by the time that you finish, technology will be so advanced that they will be able to charge your implant and then beam the book directly into your brain, complete with pictures and smells.

(I'd recommend staying away from animal books, might not be too fun to smell manure all the way through Charlotte's web!)

I'm just kidding of course... But I suppose if the book is going out of print then you can make an exception and buy it. :)

message 636: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I actually have that movie but I've never seen it. Sounds interesting!

message 637: by Jill (new)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments Fiona wrote: "Oooh lol. :D But how do you know it'll be going out of print. Maybe it's better to buy it just IN CASE it does?

Hehe.

Have you ever watched Existenz? About a computer game you plug into your spine."

That disgusting scene in the restaurant when Jude Law has to eat the "special" would have been enough for me to shout "I'm out!" and go back to The Sims.

message 638: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Now I'm gonna have to watch this tonight...

message 639: by Gracee (new)

Gracee | 99 comments ruh roh. I forgot I'm trying to not spend more money on books. I still had two B/N gift cards (one from Christmas 2007). And I bought books...
:::::: blush::::: sowwry. 50.00 worth.. at least they were on my TBR list.

message 640: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker After the Oscars, I'm wanting to read The Reader...but I don't own it. I know I can get a Mass Market at Wal-Mart for $5 or $6...but I hate Mass Markets, so I'd be upgrading eventually...

message 641: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Lori, I'll send you my copy for free if you want... Just message me with your address. :)

I feel so lucky to have the two-story city library across the street from my work so I can visit on my breaks :)

message 649: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Rachel, My mom always encourages me to use the library instead of buying...but I don't think she understands the good feeling of owning the book. Usually all I want are gift cards for Borders, but my uncle appears to be the only one that gets that memo.
