Did you get the 50th anniversary edition of Dharma Bums? It's really cool.

And by the way, I thought you were on my side! Now I want to be the 1 or maybe 2 Kerouac I don't own! Haha.

...stayin' strong...

message 552: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) I'm about ready to give in and purchase somebooks! Why? Well, my 92-year-old aunt is looking for a particular book, which I've found on Amazon.com ... and, of course, I need to make the "no shipping" quota! HELP! ;o)

message 553: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Okay, I went into a bookstore today for HALF AN HOUR...

and came out with no books.

None.

message 554: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Don't do it Liz! Be strong!

message 555: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Good for you Emma! I knew you had it in you!

message 556: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 18, 2009 11:27PM) (new)

Hold on Ichaerus!! If you go to the bookshop, leave your wallet with a friend!! (I know it would be sinning in your mind, but at least you wouldn't bring books home!) Too bad Amazon is so enabling...

Good job Emma.

silvia | 282 comments I fit into 1,2 and parcially on 4 - cause lot of times I prefer to spend my weekends at home reading that going out whit friends.

I'm going to buy new bookshelfs this weekend. although I now that having shelf space is un hazard I will feel the compulsion to get books until its filled

message 558: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (dad-man) | 155 comments THIS IS DAY THREE

Woohoo! My compulsion is cured, under control, and spanked like a redheaded stepchild, and now I can start buying books again!!!

...right?

message 559: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Nice try...

message 560: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (dad-man) | 155 comments Mmm...now you have me craving lemon creme crepes. I am so going to make that Saturday morning.

message 561: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Mmm.. I want raspberry crepes now! Thanks guys!

Ichaerus, you're doing so well! I think I'm getting a bit teary-eyed!

message 562: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Don't tell me giving up buying books is like giving up smoking. My mom has put off quitting for 20 years because she swears she'll gain weight.

Looks like book-buying-bans make you hungry too!

message 563: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) What? I just like raspberry crepes.

message 564: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Ooo I suddenly want to go to Cora's...

message 565: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Okay, I have not given up buying books like you guys. (I DON'T have hundreds, unread, at home) I have noticed something, though. I would think it's a symptom we would all share. Over the years, I have always read a lot. I have favorites I have read over and over. Before GRs, every few new books I finished, I'd read a reliable standard. Stephen King, Colleen McCullough, whatever. It was like visiting old friends. Now, I don't want to do that. It seems that now I am actually keeping track of what I read, (and especially that others can see my progress)I shouldn't waste my time on a book I have already read.
Does anyone else feel this way?

message 566: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I do! Before GR, I reread books ALL.THE.TIME.

Now just the thought of doing so makes me shudder with guilt.

The good so far outweighs the bad though...when I think about all the amazing books I would not have read if it wasn't for the lovely people of GR.

message 567: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Oh! I agree, it's just that I miss some of my old friends. I'm glad there's a Stephen King group, because I can at least discuss the group read with them, so I get a little "fix".
And guilt is exactly what I feel. Glad not to be alone:)

Yes! I have a few books on Lucille Ball/I Love Lucy, actually most of my non-fiction books were constant rereads for me. Since I'm OCD and have a list of the order I read books in, I made myself add The Diary of Anne Frank to the list just so I would be guaranteed a reread!

message 569: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You know, its so funny that you should mention that, because really, before GR, the last new book I bought was Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows- released in July of 2007.

I primarily re-read books that I already owned, so I didn't buy a lot of new books. I used to own known favorites, and would just rotate them, now I'm a freakin B&N addict.

GR is such an enabler.

message 570: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 48 comments "I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my to-be-read pile is looking more respectable and I must read the books I already own!"
Like that is going to happen.

I told myself a couple days ago that I could not buy any more books. I have over 50 I haven't read and 5 coming in the mail.
So today, being the genius that I am, I decided to check out the used book store in the library and I end up walking out with 3 books. Then I go to work(at Borders) and buy 3 more books. The worst part is that I bought a book about other books.

Kandice said: It seems that now I am actually keeping track of what I read, (and especially that others can see my progress) I shouldn't waste my time on a book I have already read.

Well, yes and no... I've always been a big re-reader, because I love having time with "old friends" and discovering something new each time I read them, so it's not a waste of time for me...even a mystery is a good re-read; I don't mind if I know who dunnit!

Also because I could never find a new book I wanted to read, and instead of risking a huge expense I'd re-read somehing I already knew was good. (Until recently English books here were frightfully expensive... now they're just expensive!)

So I'm still re-reading a lot of stuff (can't remember most of what I read since my son was born, so re-reading isn't a problem here!) and you all are giving me lots of great suggestions for new stuff. I'm getting the best of both!

message 572: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Remember how I said I could buy if I got a 40% off coupon? Well I got one! But I think I'm just going to update my copy of The Fountainhead to a bigger copy.

message 573: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (dad-man) | 155 comments That is a much better way to do it Lori. I think we can allow that. Everyone knows mass market paperbacks are teh suxxorz. Plus, you aren't really adding a book to your list, just getting a copy that's easier to manage. Also...

THIS IS DAY FOUR

So far so good. I haven't even broken down and bought the new Jhumpa Lahiri or the last of Timothy Zane's "Dragonback" series, even though I have the other 5!

message 574: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I got a 40% off coupon from Borders and I DELETED THE EMAIL.

Victory!

message 575: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Hey Fiona...did you ever figure out what you're reading next?

message 576: by Kandice (new)

Kandice THE CHOCOLATE WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would absolutely love to re-read HP in quick succession, but even at a good pace, hat's probably close to a month. Maybe when you guys have whittled down your TBR already owned piles we could do it as a group effort? Think of the magnificent dicussions we could have. Especially knowing how it all turns out;)

message 577: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Kandice! You made me drool in anticipation...

message 578: by [deleted user] (new)

Who's an enabler...?

message 579: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Ichaerus, Thank you for giving me permission. I hate mass paperbacks, especially of really thick books; they hurt my hands. And I'm glad you're doing so well.

message 580: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (dad-man) | 155 comments Well, thank you to you too. =-) Just fighting the good fight and all that other cheesy nonsensical such-and-such.

message 581: by Allison (new)

message 584: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Allison, I think that's a great idea. Figuring out what to read next is always my biggest battle.

message 585: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) done!

message 586: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Is anyone else not getting their daily digest? I didn't get mine yesterday or today. I had the same problem last week sometime also...

message 587: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments That 40% Borders coupon came at the best time. My fiance and I were already planning a trip to Borders today and the coupon rocks because it is more than my employee discount so...extra savings!

And Kandice, I love the idea of a group HP re-read, that could be so much fun!

message 598: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Err... I just finished my count... 223 books to read. I am sad, I will never be able to buy a book again.

message 599: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You will Vicki, you will! If you can read 2 per week, that's only a little bit over 2 years, which is far from never!

And you don't have to be so hard to wait till the end. Lets say if you finish the first 23 you can buy a book or maybe two but go in with the thought of one. then after another fifty the same thing and so on...
