Susan C (somersetpurplegmailcom) Tressa how is the Queen of bedlam?

message 52: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) About halfway done with Just After Sunset (Stephen King's most recent collection of short stories). I'm enjoying it so far. It was the perfect book to pick up at the beginning of my summer...like sinking back into an old, comfy chair.

Susan C (somersetpurplegmailcom) I'm reading Bel Canto finally. I am really enjoying it even though a mean lady at the library told me the ending (I'm trying to block it out).

I LOVED that book EXCEPT for the ending.

Anna | 5 comments I'm reading The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman --about 1/2 way through it and really like it. I've also started reading The Stand by Stephen King for a group read--I've never read this book and so far I like it...

Susan C (somersetpurplegmailcom) I just recieved Jigsaw Man via a swap which I've been wanting for a long time. Now I'm finding that I'm a little nervous to start reading the book, it's going to be very gory and creepy.

Has anyone read the book?

I just finished Messiah by Starling it's more suspence than horror but it's one of the best books I've read lately.

Dylan try pricing Alibris for books. Their coupon right now is Jack. It's best to place seperate orders and reusing the coupon. You will pay the same shipping either way.

I love this site too. I've swapeed both ways so many times myhusband wonders where all the books are going to go. I also like their soft bookcovers.

Swaptree is awful in comparison. They have no real way to fix any bad swaps or unreceived books. You have to mail immediately otherwise your status is blemished. They stink.

Susan C (somersetpurplegmailcom) Dylan if you haven't read Laymon's Beast House series or Jack Ketchum's offspring series, then do so. You just have to get past the B movie dialogue. Both have recently been republished.

Ketchum's The Girl Next Door is as equally creepy.

Sam, Curtis & Dixie (tucksmama) I am currently reading "Cell" by Stephen King. I was sooooo into this book in the beginning...but now as I am closing in on the end, it has got me in a bit of a standstill...its in a S-L-O-W drawnout spot that keeps making me loose my interest in it....I HATE THAT!!

message 63: by Susan C (new)

Susan C (somersetpurplegmailcom) I'm reading the Talented Mr. Ripley, which when you really think about, Tom he's one heck of a sociopath!

Anna | 5 comments I'm reading The Stand by Stephen King and finishing up Phillip Pulmans the amber spyglass

Daniel Eddington (danieleddington) | 1 comments I'm re-reading "The Killing of the Saints" (Alex Abella) about a couple of murderous (possessed?) practitioners of the Afro-Cuban cult religion Santeria. I read it awhile ago but haven't been able to find it in probably a decade. I stumbled on it on kindle and have enjoyed it the second time through.

Susan C (somersetpurplegmailcom) I'm reading Twilight by Stephenie Meyers. I put it up for a trade on paperback swap then started reading the first chapter. It grabbed me. So I told the person who wants it, I'll read it by Mon or Tues.

It's interesting but not scary at all yet. I like it so far.

Has anyone else read the series and what is your opinion?

I only started the first one and thought it was awfully poorly written. could not finish it and I've only not finished 2 books in the last 4 years.

Pullman's- His Dark Materials series will always be one of my all-time favorites. He's an amazing storyteller

My wife dragged me to see the movie. I really, really hated it. I'd be curious if the book ends up being worthwhile.

message 70: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) I did like the first book. The rest of the series was too teen angsty for me. I also thought the relatinship was a sick relationship. Very stalker controlling creepy relationship

message 71: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I can't figure out why when i tell people i read horror they ask me if i've read Twilight. I've never had really any interest. I did the vampire thing when i was 14, with Ann Rice's The Vampire Chronicles.

message 72: by Allan (new)

Allan Azouz (Allan_Azouz) | 18 comments I loved the Vampire Chronicles. Anne Rice has a beautiful command of the language. Right now I'm reading 17 Days in Treblinka. When I finished Mascot, my school's librarian told me I had to read it. I am looking for some good horror to offset the grimness.

Allan Azouz (Allan_Azouz) | 18 comments Anna wrote: "I'm reading The Stand by Stephen King and finishing up Phillip Pulmans the amber spyglass"

The Stand was the first Stephen King book I read. My only problem was that certain things were prociesed that never came to fruition.

message 74: by Anna (new)

Anna | 5 comments I'm still reading The Stand by Stephen King--its going to take a me a while to finish it I think. I also started reading Thinner by Richard Bachman and The Pact by Jodi Picoult...just wish I had more time to read!

message 75: by [deleted user] (new)

message 76: by Miriam (new)

message 78: by Greg (new)

Greg Fulcher | 5 comments I am currently reading The Doomsday Key and getting ready to start The Strain. Does anybody have a good suggestion on a good scary book. I havent gotten on the edge of my seat believe it or not since I read King's Pet Sematary at the age of 13. Please give me some feedback!

message 79: by [deleted user] (new)

lol... idk, no books have really scared me at all since i read that kids version of sherlock holmes and the speckled band when i was in 3rd grade.... lol

message 80: by Greg (new)

Greg Fulcher | 5 comments Lol..I know it sounds silly. Doesnt need to necessarily scare me....just get my heart pumping good and hard (without me having to run a few miles while reading it).

message 82: by [deleted user] (new)

book 2 in da vampire chronicles...

message 83: by Greg (new)

Greg Fulcher | 5 comments Would you say that those are pretty good?

message 84: by [deleted user] (new)

yup!

message 85: by Christine (new)

Christine (ebnerlake) Vampire Chronicles are good, but not scary. She goes for Gothic more than scary. I was pretty grossed out by Afraid by Jack Kilborn. Not necessarily scared, but edge of my seat kind of disgusted.

message 86: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (chkntza) I thought The Tommyknockers by Stephen King was very scary.

message 87: by Greg (new)

Greg Fulcher | 5 comments I will have to try those out. Thanks! If anybody runs across a book that is really a thriller let me know!

Dustin the wind Crazy little brown owl (dustpancrazy) Greg wrote: "I will have to try those out. Thanks! If anybody runs across a book that is really a thriller let me know!"

Try Relentless A Novel, the newest by Dean Koontz. It was very good. Of course with Koontz, you have to be able to kinda put reality aside and accept that in his fictional world, anything could happen.

Wendy-Lynn Christine wrote: "Vampire Chronicles are good, but not scary. She goes for Gothic more than scary. I was pretty grossed out by Afraid by Jack Kilborn. Konrath Jack Daniel's Mysteries. They were pretty good.

message 90: by Allan (new)

Allan Azouz (Allan_Azouz) | 18 comments Hmmm. What constitutes disgusting?

message 91: by Christine (new)

Christine (ebnerlake) Well, I don't want to ruin anything for you guys, but I will say that it hits the ground running with some pretty icky scenarios...the first chapter is innocuous enough and then there's a home invasion that ends...badly. Really badly. Like, squishy badly. And it just keeps going from there.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't unreadably disgusting, but it was definitely squirm-inducing over my lunch break. Great book though.

Wendy-Lynn Christine wrote: "Well, I don't want to ruin anything for you guys, but I will say that it hits the ground running with some pretty icky scenarios...the first chapter is innocuous enough and then there's a home inva..."

Thanks Christine. I don't mind squishy and squirm-inducing :) I'll let you know what I think after I read it.

message 93: by Christine (new)

Christine (ebnerlake) I look forward to hearing your thoughts! I think you'll like it, you know, not knowing you at all or anything. :-)

Infected by Scott Sigler was scary as was Afraid by Jack Kilborn. I don't scare too easily and these both gave me nightmares, which is a good sign of a scary book. Rice's Vampire Chronicles are not scary what so ever.

Tom Mueller | 9 comments Susan C wrote: "Ketchum's The Girl Next Door is as equally creepy."

What is especially creepy about this for me is that it is based on fact. I like most all of Ketchum's work.
Ketchum J

Ditto. If ANYthing would be worse than getting eaten by Bruce, it would have to be getting wrapped up by IT

message 97: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (chkntza) I'm adding the scary books to my to read list. Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm currently reading A Canticle for Liebowitz by Miller Jr and Bone Song by Meaney. Canticle is right up my alley, being a post-apocalyptic novel, and groundbreaking, but a tough read. Bone Song is an easier read that I use to kind of break up Canticle sessions.
