2012 May Pick It For Me! Challenge
Gigi wrote: "Diane-FireflySorry for the delay. I'm on vacation and had a hard time logging on. Anyway, I hope you find something you like.
May is Loyalty Month - rec a book that is from a favorite author ..."
Thanks for the picks Gigi. I'm leaning towards Mouth to Mouth. Let me know if you want to buddy read it.
DawnI see you are a fan of audio like me so so I recommended the audio version whenever possible. Several of my picks are books that I haven't read yet but I'm interested in reading this month. I cannot do all the buddy reads but I can do at least one or two depending on the book. Just let me know! I hope you find something there you like. :)
May is Loyalty Month (favorite series) - Monkeewrench by P.J. Tracy OR The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Two of my favorite series and both are EXCELLENT in audio.
May is Graduation Time (YA) - You must read Angelfall by Susan Ee, RIGHT NOW! If you don't have it, I can lend it to you...just give me the word. Or if you feel like reading something else, try Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles. The audiobook is amazing and the story is so good.
International Space Day, May 4 (alternative universe) - I listened to Ready Player One by Ernest Cline in audiobook and it was simply wonderful. I think I've been recommending it every month since I read it. Of if want another type of book, maybe you'd like to join me in a buddy read/ listen of Cinder by Marissa Meyer.
Join Hands Day, May 4 (new author or new genre) - Where Dreams Begin by Lisa Kleypas. I don't see you read much historical romance so I thought you may want to try some. Or if you feel like trying some magical realism, then please read Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen. This book is simply wonderful.
Tourist Appreciation Day, May 6 (set in a place I've visited or somewhere you'd like to visit) - Guernica by Dave Boling, this is set in Spain which I just loved. I haven't read it and it looks to be on the tough side but if you want to read it, I can join you OR if you are in the mood for a really funny historical with a crazy hero, you may want to try Mr. Impossible by Loretta Chase; I haven't been to Egypt but really want to. :)
National Teacher Day, May 8 (non fiction) - We don't seem to agree much when rating classics so I'll go with non-fiction for this category. You could try How to Be a Villain: Evil Laughs, Secret Lairs, Master Plans, and More!!! by Neil Zawacki OR Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart Bitches' Guide to Romance Novels by Sarah Wendell, which are both very funny, specially for us readers.
Armed Forces Day, May 18 (thriller, military or special ops) - Cry No More by Linda Howard, which is excellent romantic suspense. As a fan of the genre, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Or you can read Before I Go To Sleep by S.J. Watson, which is another book I'm planning to read this month.
Maritime Day, May 22 (beach read) - Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella OR Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder. You can't go wrong with either of these.
BUDDY READS
Clean Up Your Room Day, May 10 (oldest on pickee's TBR list) - The Restorer by Amanda Stevens OR Take No Prisoners by Cindy Gerard. Two books from your TBR that look interesting. I can't buddy read either of these though.
Chocolate Chip day, May 15 (yummy cover) - I'm buddy-reading Forged in Fire by Trish McCallan with Lauren and we're starting on the 7th. Let me know if you want to join us! OR we can try Unleashed by Cherrie Lynn.

ok MacWolfe - here you go!May is...
1. Loyalty month
you seem to have a lot of JR Ward on your shelf, as well as Nora Roberts - so why not go with either Lover Reborn or Naked in Death (Nora's alter-ego)
2. Graduation Time
So i've read one of these and the other two sound interesting, so if you decide to read the second one let me know and and maybe we can do an unofficial buddy read - Between Shades of Gray (YA historical fiction set in Lithuania and Siberia), Break or The Things a Brother Knows
3. international space day
Divergent (and if you like it, the 2nd one came out today) or Gabriel's Ghost (set in space/various other planets)
4. Join Hands Day
one of the genres that I love is m/m romance and each month a group of us have been buddy reading a book, so in May we are going to be reading Between Sinners and Saints if you would like to join in. otherwise, how about a thriller/suspense with Shadow Man (I just finished listening to this today and holy crap it was good!)
5. tourist appreciation day
I've read both of these and enjoyed them - Snow Angels - a nordic noir mystery set in Finland, or Bel Canto (notionally it says an unnamed south american country, but it is loosely based on events that occurred in Peru)
6. National Teacher's Day
So I saw that you had liked Jane Eyre so why not try Agnes Grey written by her sister Anne (FWIW, i'm evenly split on my like/dislike of the Bronte sisters, so i'll be interested on your take), or for some non-fiction, why not try Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex - its a history of the study of sex...I don't know if you do audiobooks or not, but the narrator did a really good job, I just got done listening to it.
7. Armed Forced Day - one of my favorite days!!
Two book recommendations here, What You Can't See which is an anthology featuring several FBI agents and other military type people or No Mercy (the main character is a female Army sniper who has been discharged because of injuries, but she is still kick ass)
8. Maritime Day
For me, aside from romances, when i'm on the beach, I like Cozy mysteries or sometimes chick lit. For a cozy mystery, why not try A Dyeing Shame: Death at the Beauty Box (the main character is an 80 year crime solver...) or I've Got Your Number - I haven't read this one yet, but i'm intrigued by it.
I don't know if I will be able to do any buddy reads this month, but I've only read 1 of the 5 i'm recommending here
9. Clean Up your Room day...
Why not try The Giver (which to me started the whole YA dystopia phase) or The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing - i have this one on the pile
10. Chocolate Chip day
mmmm
Thanks for the great pick Dee! I added all the books to my TBR list. I will read
for sureI'll also do either
or
I'm very curious to read
, but I think its one I'll read in the summer. Thanks again E
Thanks DG for the great picks! I love audiobooks at first I wasn't too sure of them but I do a lot of driving. To start - The Lies of Locke Lamora, Angelfall (would love to borrow it especially as I have a road trip/competition starting Thursday), How to Be a Villain: Evil Laughs, Secret Lairs, Master Plans, and More!!!, and Forged in Fire is good for the buddy read. I might read Cinder and Mr. Impossible depending on how the month goes.
no problem E and if you like Bonk, she has some other ones (Spook about the afterlife, Packing for Space - all about various space programs around the world) - all are good readsMacwolf01 [Elise] wrote: "Thanks for the great pick Dee! I added all the books to my TBR list. I will read

Just to warn you that the story in Locke Lamora is not strictly told in linear fashion and that could be confusing at the beginning. But once you start following what's going on, it's REALLY good. :)
"How to be a Villain" is a really silly book. I was roaring with laughter in almost every page.
I'm glad you'll join us in the buddy read! I'll set up the thread today. :)
I've finished "One Day" by David Nicholls. It's difficult to rate such a book 'cause it's obviously a great book, very well written and everything, but there's something that makes you so unsatisfied at the end, hurting even.I think I'll go with 4 stars.
Thanks Sandy for the reccomandation, it's been a really emotional read.

Great Amy! I can't wait.

Thanks for the pick D.G.
The best parts are the developments in Bella and Zsadist's relationship as well as John Matthew's introduction to the vampire world.

So I went with a different book than I had originally planned on and read Viscount Breckenridge to the Rescue. I haven't read this genre in a while but it was still an enjoyable read. Thank you for the pick!

Yet again another great addition to the Beckstrom series. How Devon Monk continues to surprise me 8 books in and keep me captivated I will never know.
Total Books Completed:
I finished reading A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness and it was awesome! It reminded me of a paranormal version of the Davinci Code, lots of history references and it's set at Oxford University. I will definately be pre-ordering the next book when it comes out in July! *****
Hi Ruth Ann, I finished reading Sacred Evil last night - it was a good read and I enjoyed reading it, but it seemed to be missing something that the first 2 books had. Thanks for the rec.
I just finish my second book from the list Melissa put together (post 282) Clean up your room, May 10 ~ Shoot to Thrill I have a copy of this book or this looked good as well but would have to put on hold at library Forget Me Not.
Shoot to Thrill by Nina Bruhns

Lacy, I finished
last night. I loved it! I can't wait to read the other books in the series. I can't decide what to read next now. haha
~KarenH~ I finished my first pick, The Gamble, this morning and I loved it! I have been meaning to read one of her books after hearing so many good things here on goodreads about them, so thanks for the push!I am also listening to another of your picks, The Unsung Hero. I am enjoying it, but still have a ways to go.
When did you want to start our buddy read of Stranger in My Arms?
I just finished my first pick, Over the Edge, and liked it quite a lot. Thanks for the pick, Lady Allison! I'm planning on reading at least a couple more of your recs, and hopefully will have time for a buddy read at the end of the month. :)
MountainKat wrote: "~KarenH~ I finished my first pick, The Gamble, this morning and I loved it! Still have a long way to go though, I'm not even halfway through yet.
I can start Stranger in My Arms whenever you want - just finished the book I was listening to and I have a fairly short one up next. I can either go ahead with that (which should only take me a couple of days) or jump right into Stranger, whichever works best for you.

I started another short one, so I should be good to go with the buddy read Monday or whenever. I can always find something to read!

and I give it 4 stars. I've never read this author before and just picked this book up as .99 cent special for my nook, so I had no idea what to expect. It was a fast paced extremely enjoyable PNR/shifter story. So glad you picked it for me!!
