Who is your daddy and what does he do? — READ THIS FIRST!
Also, I think we can use this thread to welcome any new group members. If there's anyone here who'd like to introduce themselves, please feel free to do so.
I'm excited to be part of the group! Thanks for the invite. I'm not getting much reading done these days so I'll try and keep up! =)
Yes. Hi Jason...thanks for introducing me to goodreads. Being a teacher, I'm off in the summer, so it presents the perfect opportunity to read. I was just starting to generate my personal summer reading list when I saw your post.
I'm glad you joined, Brianne—welcome! Also, Sue: I don't think you know Janice personally, but she is your second cousin. Janice's father and my father are brothers.
Hi, thank you for accepting me into the group :).I'm excited about the books I'll be introduced to :).
Wine-wise, I'm from one of the northernmost wine regions in Europe; the main wines here are Mueller-Thurgau, Riesling and Pinot blanc. Just thought you might want to know :).
Jason wrote: "I'm guessing Germany? Nice, and welcome to the group!"Yes, Saxony :). And thank you :).
G'day allMy name is Sally and I am from Australia - originally from the Hunter Valley wine region hubby and I now live the tropics. Our holidays all revolve around wine regions of Australia and New Zealand :)
Being the tropics we drink lots of whites - but I do like my reds when I get a chance. Sangiovase, merlot, temprenello and Shiraz spring to mind for reds - viogner, pinot Gris, Sav blanc and Chardonnay are my favourite whites.
As for books - I am eclectic in my reading and read anything from intense and thought provoking to light and fluffy.
Sue wrote: "Nice to meet you Janice! Our family is so big it is funny we don't all know each other."Nice to meet you as well!
Hi, Michelle. There could be, but I was afraid to overdo it. This is a brand new group and my thought was to do something every other month, unless there's interest otherwise. But there's still enough time to read one of the choices for May!
Hi, Thanks for having me. I live in Vermont. I like whites mostly, but will definitely go to the reds with a good steak. My go-to wines are Pinot Grigios, but I also like Sauv Blancs, dry Reislings and the like. I have been making my own wine for about a year now, some batches more successful than others...my taste in books range from historical dramas, classic lit, mysteries, and yes, the occasional bodice-ripper. Looking forward to Mrs. Dalloway!
There's a Total Wine near my house and it's like a supermarket of wine awesomeness. Every new book, I stop there for a new bottle of wine. I'd be cool with several books (or bottles of wine) a month.
Rhianna, do you LOVE that place? My parents have one in AZ. I call it WINE WORLD. It's what I think heaven will look like! :)
Hi Abbie, I came across this group on Goodreads, I don't know anyone else personally. I'm in Northern VT, by the way.
My wife drinks St. Germain, which I think is from the elderflower.Welcome to the group, Chris! I see you've already read The Book Thief, which is our pick for July, but please feel free to comment on the discussion thread as others start to post there.
Hi! Thanks for accepting me into this group! I'm Missy and I'm from the Philippines. I'm not very particular about the books that I read, so I'm willing to read from most genres. I really love Riesling ever since I had it while studying in Germany. I'm more into fruity wines, but I usually have Cabernet Sauvignon because it's widely available here. I've had good experience with German Rieslings but not with Australian ones. I guess I'm still not good at picking Australian wines. I also snack on cheese with wine, but not really on chocolates. (though I love chocolates, I mean, who doesn't). I'd like to have sommelier or near-sommelier knowledge of wines. Thanks again!
We're about ready to welcome our 100th member. Should we send him or her a bottle of wine or something??
Eh. You were #97, I think. But it's all arbitrary, anyway. Most of those people joined and have probably never looked at a post. And no one's really getting wine. :D
Thanks for having me, everyone! I am a huge book and wine lover so this group is right up my alley! I'm a stay-at-home mom of a 5 and 2 year old in Ontario, Canada, a part time student and part time employee. But any spare time I have, I try to squeeze in reading! Summer is perfect for me, reading AND wine-wise, because I have no school and no work. I'm hoping to read a good handful of new books before September. As I type this, I'm drinking a full bodied Cab/Sauv/Merlot and reading Ken Follet's Hornet Flight. It's a war book, nothing like his Pillars of the Earth series (LOVE!) but still decent. I look forward to seeing some new suggestions and discussions from this group. Cheers for now!
I'm drinking a 2010 Stonehedge cab with tonight's steak on the grill. Medium rare, please.Which part of Ontario are you from? I've been to Toronto...
Welcome to the group. We start A Walk in the Woods in August, but there's still plenty of time to read July's pick.
I have not yet read Ken Follett!
We had steak on the Q last night....yum! Originally, I'm from Montreal, Quebec (born and raised). My parents live in Newmarket (45 minutes north of Toronto) where I lived as a kid. I've lived in Toronto (my hubby is a cop there) but we currently live in Hamilton.
I'll be hittin' up Indigo for July's book tomorrow....
Read Pillars of the Earth - SO GREAT!! Not my usual genre but I totally dug it!
Cheers!!
I am happy to join such a jolly group. Reading and wine-drinking occupy most of my day now that I've retired. Aside from the wine connection, I was attracted to your book selections and the spirited discussions (not a perfect pun, I admit)! Chianti is my preferred drink although I'm trying to develop a taste for a white alternative. Any suggestions?
Welcome to the group, Gary! I definitely embrace lively discussion here and love it when people participate in active threads. I'm not really a white wine drinker, but my wife enjoys a German wine called "Gewürztraminer Spätlese" (from G&M Machmer "Weingut") and Portuguese vinho verde. I hope you are enjoying retirement!
Thanks Jason!I have sampled the Portuguese wine-most happily on past trips to Lisbon and Madeira-and I will look for the German white. When I was in high school in the last century, Rhine wine was a favorite. We used to hide it under our shirts in wine skins. I have been scrolling through many of your reviews and admire your taste-and your eloquence. Full disclosure: I spent the last hour, while Obama and Romney were revisiting their talking points under the guise of discussing foreign policy, reading your reviews of books I've read. I think it was a wiser use of my time then listening to them!
I agree; I watched the debate, too, but after it's over I often wonder why I bothered. I'm glad you enjoyed my reviews, Gary. It makes me glad when people say that.
Hi Gary,First things first.....
Try some Sauvignon Blanc from the Malborough region of NZ,its a fab white.
Now for the books.....
I flicked through your book list and I find we have read a lot of the same ones/types.
Welcome to the group.
Kat
Hello. my name is Marc and I'm from Toronto. I'm new here and also new to Goodreads. I figured since I love wine it would be in my best interests to check if there are any wine themed groups on this site. Yadda yadda here I am now.I enjoy fine red wine and good company. I also like drawing and writing
Welcome Gary and Marc! My name is Keryn and South African wines are of course my favourite, especially our pinotage in winter, and sauvignon blanc in summer (regions of Stellenbosch, Franschoek, Robertson etc). Happy reading! Being part of this online bookclub has really added to my literary 'taste' and experience.
just wanted to introduce myself, thanks for adding me to the group! i love books, and i love wine! mostly, i drink drier white wines, but i also love a good fruit wine. i cook with red wine and sometimes sip that too! lol books, well i'm all over the place as far as what i like. i especially love mystery and thrillers, but i can't get enough Jane Austen/classic types either. i just enjoy reading!!
Hi Kristy. If anyone's looking for a white wine, I had a terrific Pinot Grigio: Tiziano,2009. My friend who makes his own wine brought it. Another friend, who doesn't drink wine, brought an expensive French white which wasn't nearly as good.
My friend Matt has just joined the group. He also happens to have just published his first book (The Journal). Welcome, Matt, and congrats on the publication!

The purpose of Read Between the Wines is to nominate books to read together as a group. Then, we can post our thoughts/comments in the "Discussions" section. Or not. It doesn't really matter. Oh, and if you've rated or written a review for a book that is on this group's bookshelf, it will automatically appear on the "group page" for that book (see our bookshelf).
Also, we may use this group to plan real-life book/wine club meetings periodically. Just use the "events" link to plan one!
Participation in this group is strongly encouraged. Even if you decide not to read the group's book choice for the month, your thoughts and comments are always welcome.
