Freedom and A Visit from the Goon Squad were both ones I predicted would be added.

I think I'm quite okay with Ghost Road being left off the list. The first book is by far the best out of that series - by miles and should definitely be on the list. The others.... I was so disappointed when reading the remaining 2 how little they met Regeneration's greatness.
Is there a list of books that were removed?
Can't find one..
Can't find one..
Arukiyomi's iphone app also has the list of the 714 books on all three lists (the core, he calls it). Which btw reminds me - Arukiyomi, will you update the app too in 2013?Now - the new list: I'm excited about the books that have been added. I predicted Freedom too! I'm sad to see Kafka on the Shore being removed - I love that book! - but 1Q84 has been added and I do like that they don't have too many books by one author. I mean, do you really need to read 10 novels by Dickens to grasp what Dickens' did for the novel?
Anyways, still curious to see what all the changes are - especially which other books have been removed.
These list books were removed; The talk of the Town by Ardal O'Hanlan
Enduring Love by Ian McEwan
Jack Maggs by Peter Carey
Money To burn by Ricardo Piglia
The Ghost Road by Pat Barker
Felicia's Journey by William Trevor
The Music of Chance by Paul Auster
I have seen 12 added and 8 removed so far. I still have 1005 in my list. What are the other four that have been removed? Added: See http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/... + Memoirs of a Geisha.
Removed:
Kafka on the Shore by Murakami
The Talk of the Town by Ardal O'Hanlan
Enduring Love by Ian McEwan
Jack Maggs by Peter Carey
Money To burn by Ricardo Piglia
The Ghost Road by Pat Barker
Felicia's Journey by William Trevor
The Music of Chance by Paul Auster

Does anyone have a definitive list of what was added? I have the 2012 list but want to add the other books to it!
Katie, the only thing I could find when googling was this link to listology bir only for 2006http://www.listology.com/ukaunz/list/...
Katie wrote: "Thanks for the help I found a list of all the list online so I am sorted :-)"Where? Can you link to it? I have yet to find a list for the 2012 edition that was just released a few weeks ago.
Yes, please do link to the list, Katie! So there have definitely been no changes to earlier parts of the list/s?
This is the link I found, it doesn't look totally up to date yet but I am using it for the time being:http://www.1morechapter.com/projects/...

Actually, that list looks very much up to date now, the first 11 books are the ones that got added this year. I copied the list from this website into a word document before the 2012 edition...time for an update!
Sandi wrote: "Actually, that list looks very much up to date now, the first 11 books are the ones that got added this year. It does have the 11 books added from the 2012 edition, but it doesn't indicate which 12 (or possibly more?***) books were removed. I'm still waiting for someone to post a definitive 2012 edition list.
***I suspect Memoirs of a Geisha is not the only book that was re-added. The publisher's flyer for the 2012 edition mentioned Aesop's Fables, Kidnapped, and The Passion, which were removed for the 2008 edition.
My copy of the new list has finally arrived and I have been scouring it for changes.Adding onto the list mentioned by Kristel and Steven above the final four that have been removed are:
The Accidental by Ali Smith
Mothers Milk by Edward St Aubyn
Falling Man by Don DeLillo
Invisible by Paul Auster
Which brings us up to 12, which balances with the 11 new additions and Memoirs of a Geisha which was re-added.
Despite the publishers flyer, which I was curious about too, Aesop's Fables, Kidnapped and The Passion have not been re-added after all.
Thank you so much for that information, Tanya. That publisher's flyer was really strange then; maybe they just wanted to mess with our minds. :)
Tanya, Deanne, others with the physical 2012 editionAre the following books still in the 2012 edition?
An Obedient Father – Akhil Sharma
Ignorance – Milan Kundera
Nineteen Seventy Seven – David Peace
Fear and Trembling – Amélie Nothomb
Fugitive Pieces – Anne Michaels
London Fields – Martin Amis
Cigarettes – Harry Mathews
The Taebek Mountains – Jo Jung-rae
The Hour of the Star – Clarice Lispector
Correction – Thomas Bernhard

Thank you for double-checking! I was reading a user's review of the 2012 edition & the user listed all the above books as removed from the 2012 edition (compared to the 2006 edition). And Arukiyomi's spreadsheet mistakenly has the latter three books color-coded "blue = books remaining on the list since 2006" in the combined list tab. So, thank you for clearing that up for me!
That's ok :) I think I've read the same review, which is another reason I am glad to have a book copy, so I can clear up any funniesI noticed the incorrect colour coding for those three too when I checked the spreadsheet to see what lists they were in after finding they weren't in the new book... Must go fix that up!

I don't think anyone should feel so compelled to that they absolutely have to read all of these books. Personally, I spread them out to about every 4 or 5 books. I like to enjoy a wide range of reads, there are plenty of good books that will never be on any "must read" list.
The next two books from the list that I will be attempting though are "Middlemarch" and "Everything is Illuminated"
LOL I'm just getting into this and it's like Literary Reading Challenge with Calvinball rules. Well, I'm game. Just ordered the latest edition from Amazon UK.
It's enough to make you give up. Is there a list of books that never, ever change across every list that has been published?
Does the group bookshelf have the core 714 books? I'd love to see that happen to keep us all on track if the admins of the group are willing to add that....I'm sure the rest of us would appreciate it too, so that we aren't completely confused, LOL
I don't see why seeing the core matters. Are you reading only list books, or are you reading off-list too? If reading both list and off-list books, then if the book has been removed from the current list doesn't really matter, does it?

Harold Bloom's Western Canon fits the bill. This list is about the size of all the Penguin Classics.

I was actually just thinking about taking the time to compare the full lists for all 4 books and creating my own list of the 714 books. Really all we would need to do is cross out the books on the first list that do not show up on the second and then continue with the third and fourth lists. If I feel so ambitious when I get a break from work, I may do that.
I did a quick filter in my spreadsheet and the core is now down to 707 with the 2012 list added in. I have now read 332 overall, 290 from the 2006 list and 266, 267 and 269 from the revisions.
Does anyone have a list only of the books which have been added to the 2012 version, please? I think I've seen it on here before, but can't find it today. I'd be really grateful if anyone could give me only the additions? Thanks

Hmm, my core list only comes up to 704, wonder where I went wrong. My additions and deletions equal each other for all editions and the total comes out right at 1305. Maybe one day I'll get the energy to go over each one by one to find my error but if not it's not the end of the world I guess.

Yes, Geisha comes back, but I think it can't be called part of the "Core" as it wasn't in every list. On the other hand, were some of those removed also not part of the core?
Judith wrote: "Congratulations, Steven! Care to share your spreadsheet with us? "Judith, it would be hard to extract out just the 1001 books from my spreadsheet. I have so many other things attached to it. I am also a bit leery of sharing it since Boxall has clamped down on others who have shared their lists in the past.
Here are the seven that had been in the previous three lists:Kafka on the Shore
The Talk of the Town
Jack Maggs
Enduring Love
The Ghost Road
Felicia’s Journey
The Music of Chance
These four had been in the previous two, but not the first:
Falling Man
Mother's Milk
The Accidental
Money to Burn
Invisible had only been in the last list.
I also haveThe Music of Chance as deleted in 2012 which brings the total to 12. Does this agree with your list?
Mikela wrote: "I also haveThe Music of Chance as deleted in 2012 which brings the total to 12. Does this agree with your list?"I will edit my post above. The Music of Chance is in the list of seven. For some reason I only had six there.

Understand, Steven. Thanks anyway.
I created a spreadsheet myself several months ago based on information I'd found online. It took for-freaking-ever, but I guess I'm OCD that way, and had nothing better to do for those few evenings. While not as robust as a spreadsheet, I do have all of the 1001 books (well, now it's a total of 1305 books) on one of two goodreads shelves - "1305 read" and "1305 to-be-read", which is how I keep track.

They have licensed this content to three publishers (Barrons in the US, Quintessence in the UK and another publisher I don't know the name of in Australia). Their objection is to the list being distributed for profit without their permission or remuneration to them.
While I'm on the subject, I have reached an agreement with the publishers to re-release an updated version of the books spreadsheet in 2013 so those of you who want one will have to be patient for a few more months yet.

I'll repeat Elizabeth (Alaska)'s joy!!!
Wonderful. I can't wait. I enjoy the app but I will be happy with an updated spreadsheet too!
I'm so happy that you have reached an agreement. Is it only for the spreadsheet or will we see an updated version of the app too?
