K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Do you have titles in mind that you want us to include in the TFG 100 Favorite Books, 2013 edition?

Please tell us the title, the author and why.

Maria Ella (mariaellabetos) | 1353 comments Pinoy Contemporary: A cat's tale made into a contemporary fiction. I want this entry, too -
Walong Diwata ng Pagkahulog by Edgar Calabia Samar

Classics:
Thackeray's Vanity Fair (since rumored na jowa niya si Charlotte Bronte? ahahahah)
Charles Dicken's A Tale of Two Cities (sobrang challenging because it is a tale of French and English and their war, maybe we can or cannot relate)

Business:
Spencer Johnson's Who Moved My Cheese? (I am an accountant and don't read this kind of genre much)

Kidism in Action: Katherine Paterson's Bridge to Terabithia - PLEASE VOTE FOR THIS. I only watched the movie version. They say it is short like Exupery's little prince, and it filled with imagery. it may not beat the picturesque depiction derived from reading classical novels, or it may not form part of the you-should-read-before-you-die, but i believe this book will make a difference in each and every reader. :)

Thriller: Susan Hill's Novels (anything will do, and it will be a challenge from my end)

Young-adult, Sci-fi, and other categories: I SHALL RESEARCH! :D

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Keep them coming, guys! :)

message 4: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Hmm, for now, I'd like to see a huge Russian novel. Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky. Gusto ko ring makita sina David Mitchell, Jose Saramago, at Marilynne Robinson, but these are strictly personal choices.

message 5: by Maria Ella (new)

Maria Ella (mariaellabetos) | 1353 comments ^meron na ngang Anna Karenina na malarobot lang eh~ forgot the co-author that meddles with Tolstoy's classic novel. tsk.

message 6: by Apokripos (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Ella, you're maybe referring to this:
Android Karenina by Ben H. Winters

message 7: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Instead na "Readers, I married him." Naging: "Readers, I buried him." hahahaha.

message 8: by Len (new)

Len (ebooksonline) May I suggest Mary Shelley's Frankenstein kung di pa sya nababasa dito.

message 9: by Jeruel Bert (new)

Jeruel Bert | 7 comments May I suggest The Pact and Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult.

tama si jhzun, android karenina nga. thanks for showing. :p

message 11: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments To those who are suggesting books, please tell us the reason why. Mas compelling ang reason, may possibility na magiging interested kami and we will read and we will fight for their inclusion sa 2013 edition hahahahaha.

message 12: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Honestly, don't you think it's too early for this? Wala pa nga sa kalahati ang 2012. I'll return to this during the year-end best and worst talk.

message 13: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Oo, we will just keep this open. Mas mahaba ang time for members to suggest. Kasi lalo na kung may bigla silang mabasa and they feel strongly that the book should be considered by us. So, pede pa nating basahin hahahaha.

message 14: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Right now, parang gusto kong masama ang "Responde" ni Norman Wilwayco. Kasi wala tayong short story collection.

4 stars!!! Parang 2-3 out of 13 ang gustong-gusto ko (5 stars).

Para syang rebel in terms of writing kasi he does not limit himself with the standard writing conventions.

message 15: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Saan bang bookstore available ang libro mo, John my friend? Sobra ka kung makiusap hahahaha. Parang kulang na lang lata hahahaha.

message 16: by Charles (new)

Charles | 156 comments Smaller and Smaller Circles by Ichi Batacan - Full-fledged crime/mystery novel as a Jesuit priest tries to discover who is behind several serial murders in Manila.

Blue Angel, White Shadow by Charlson Ong - A crime novel set in Ongpin where a bar performer is murdered, and everyone is a suspect including the mayor, her boss, or some of her suitors.

The Kite of Stars and Other Stories by Dean Francis Alfar - Several highly-praised SF stories in this book (even io9 covered one of them) from the promoter of Philippine speculative fiction.

Philippine Speculative Fiction Vol. 1 edited by Dean Francis Alfar- A wide variety of stories ranging from a baby that eats soil to a woman who drinks from the Pasig River.

Ang Ibong Adarna by Francisco Balagtas - Aside from the Korido metric, Ang Ibong Adarna actually goes beyond what's been portrayed in the films, including an expedition into the underground where there is a fight with a hydra.

12 by Manix Abrera - Silent comics that conveys a wide variety of stories and ideas, such as world where officeworkers suddenly gain superpowers.

The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin - An exile from an utopian society migrates to another, "free" utopian society.

Ash by Malinda Lo - A unique retelling of Cinderella...

Osama by Lavie Tidhar - A detective is hired to track down the author of Osama Bin Laden vigilante pulp novels.

The Manual of Detection - An office clerk is suddenly promoted to a detective when his predecessor mysterious disappears. His only guide is the Manual of Detection, but it's missing a chapter...

Rollie (zheick) | 2096 comments I have Le Guin's Disspossed but have not read yet because I heard Jzhun said Left Hand of Darkness is its prerequisite.

message 18: by Christine (new)

Christine (diwataluna) | 99 comments Yes, more more Phil Lit books nga siguro especially since the 1001 Books list lacks Filipino authors. At to expose the younger Filipino writers na rin.

My suggestions:
Kerima Polotan and/or Gilda Cordero Fernando
Smaller and Smaller Circles by Ichi Batacan
Norman Wilwayco (Mondomanila or Responde)
Edgar Samar's poetry

Maganda yung Ibong Adarna. Marami silang adventures and the Korido style of writing is very clear. XD!

Nanalo yun sa 2004 Palanca Awards for Poetry in Filipino, first prize.

Dito may sample: http://web.archive.org/web/2009102711...

Hindi siya prerequisite.

Pero siguro kasinghirap niya basahin.

Cary (forestercary) | 1370 comments is chronicles of narnia series included in the list?

message 23: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Hindi, Cary. Yon lang The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Ire-reserve ko na yon sa yo plus yong The Giver at another one.

message 24: by Cary (new)

Cary (forestercary) | 1370 comments hmm, sige may öne year pa to prepare haha. (Assuming na narnia ang mananalo haha)

message 25: by K.D. (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments r.a., I'm deleting your comment since it's not relevant in this thread.

You may put it so on your author thread or make one under the Promote your Stuff folder.

Thank you.

So there, since you said it "can be", let's move to placing the stuffs to proper place. Promote your Stuff. :)

I honestly want to poke the human being who discovered the word preference. Swear! :)

message 30: by Ayban (last edited May 01, 2012 07:59AM) (new)

Ayban Gabriyel | 379 comments Dear R.A.
Kamusta?

Hehe.

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments Ahem.

message 32: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciuhhh) | 1752 comments TL;DR.

Can I suggest the Monstrumologist series again for the next update? Tina said it didn't won last votation!

message 33: by Joyzi (new)

Joyzi (joit) | 1768 comments Any of these three: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing.

message 34: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciuhhh) | 1752 comments @Joyzi: nabuhay ka! Namiss kita, girl! Every time I pick one book e nabibitawan ko eh. Nakakaintimidate.

message 38: by Kristel (new)

Kristel (fanarchist) | 489 comments Kung Shakespeare naman, of the ones I've read, I think Macbeth is the best Tragedy and Twelfth Night as the best Comedy.

message 39: by Joyzi (new)

Maganda basahin kahit isa sa tat long yan.

I also liked Dark Hours by Conchitina Cruz, aka Chingbee. :)
Dean Alfar and Ian Casocot are also excellent reps for Phil speculative fic (sci-fi, fantasy genre).

message 48: by Angus (new)

I could rally for it but I don't think it's a Filipino favorite.
