Luke Dyess Does anyone know of anymore books like this that are memoirs and that don't metion nudity, sex or part of the body?

Rachel It has been a while, but perhaps try Bruchko by Bruce Olson.

Lauren Walker Evidence Not Seen: A Woman's Miraculous Faith in the Jungles of World War II

This book is spectacular. It's a story of a young woman and her husband as missionaries to the Netherland East Indies, their Japanese POW experience, and their redemption. Absolutely thrilling.

Kristen Gianna: Aborted and lived to tell about it by Jessica Shaver
Gifted Hands by Ben Carson
Rachel's Tears by Beth Nimmo
Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
Child Called It by Dave Pelzer
The Vow by Kim Carpenter
The Road of Lost Innocence by Somaly Mam (this one is actually about a girl escaping from the sex trade, but it doesn't go into any detail.)

And these are ones I haven't read yet, but look really good:
The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards
The Nazi Officer's Wife: How One Jewish Woman Survived the Holocaust by Edith Hahn Beer
The Girl in the Green Sweater by Krystyna Chiger
The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Von Trapp

Not sure if those are what you're looking for, but enjoy :)

John There is also the follow up by Corrie Ten Boom, Tramp for the Lord.

Deborah George I first read this book when i was about 12/13 but due to moving several times I lost the book then couldnt remember the title. So glad i have seen it here.. Must get it again.

Preeti Corrie ten Boom has also written 'In My Father's House'
It's great as well :)

In My Father's House

Molly I wouldn't read the Memory Keeper's Daughter if nudity is an issue. It was a wonderfully written book, but there was some nudity.

Bendy I read this on the recommendation of a friend. I have never forgotten the story of this family. Another book that had an impact on me was (For Those I Loved by Martin Gray) . Truth is always better than fiction.

MaryJo Dawson anyone who enjoyed Corrie Ten Boom's The Hiding Place might also enjoy Anna by Alberta Harris. it is also a true story, about the author's grandmother in Holland during WWII, a young married woman at the time. this is published by a vanity press so there are some editing issues, etc., but I thought the story was very inspiring, very interesting.
for inspiring fiction along these lines, surely you have heard of Jan Karon's At Home In Mitford series? they are wonderful.

Katy There was nudity in this book. It wasn't sexual, and there was a theological point to it, but it was nudity.

The Memory Keeper's Daughter definitely involves nudity and other explicits.

MaryJo Dawson oh, would like to add "Let's Roll, by Lisa Beamer, for
quality biography of admirable individuals.

Bendy There is a book called "For Those I Loved " written by Martin Gray. This book actually haunted me for a while and Ihave never forgotten it. It is worth reading.

Jean Coleman My book "Chapter 29 Revisited" has just come out and although I certainly wouldn't compare it to "The Hiding Place" which is a true classic, it does show that exciting things can happen to Christians right in home town America. God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things no matter where they are or what the circumstances of their lives may be. We need to have more testimonies on the market today to prove that you don't have to be someone famous or rich to be used by God in supernatural ways.

Karen There is an old book by ten Boom called Don't Wrestle, Just Nestle. She gives lots of good advice and recounts personal experiences.

As a side note, The Heavenly Man would be similar to The Hiding Place. It's not about the Nazi camps, but it is similar in that he escaped China because he was being hunted down because of his religious beliefs. Several people at my church have told me that it's a great book, so I've added it to my "to read" list. Oh, and one of our missionary pilots didn't realize until after the fact that he had actually transported the Heavenly Man in his plane.

Heather If you liked "The Hiding Place," then you would like Return to the Hiding Place by Hans Poley. It is about the hiding place of Corrie Ten Boom, written from the perspective of one of the actual refugees who hid there.

Samantha Li Luke wrote: "Does anyone know of anymore books like this that are memoirs and that don't metion nudity, sex or part of the body?"

Yes, Things We Couldn't Say by Diet Eman. It has no profanity or sex. Diet was a Dutch Christian who rescued Jews. Christianity is a main theme in the book (check out the quotes and some reviews) and God worked some amazing miracles in her life. She also met Corrie in a concentration camp and later, hearing Corrie's story, Diet was inspired to tell hers :)

Pat "The Hiding Place" is wonderful but even better, to me, is "Life and Death in Shanghi" by Nien Cheng. This is one of my favorite books. I hope you love it, too.

message 22: by Donna Pingry (new)

Donna Pingry Anything by Margaret T. Jensen comes to mind. She was a wonderful and prolific author. She didn't write about Nazi Germany but she did write about the pain of being disappointed by "the church".

Jean Coleman There do not seem to be as many testimonies on the market as there were in the seventies and eighties. The trend nowadays seems to be more to Christian fiction books. It is because of the lack of testimony books that I have recently published the fifth edition of my testimony book that was first released in 1976. I have found that when people read about ordinary people (like Corrie Ten Boom) who are used by God, they can identify with them and believe that the Lord will also use them. The Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship and Aglow were actually founded on testimonies and "testimony time" used to be very popular in churches at Sunday evening services. I recently ordered the book, "Shout It from the Housetops," which is the testimony of Pat Robertson just because I was so inspired by it years ago. He had nothing, but he believed God and look at the way he was used to expand the kingdom of God. Anyway, if you are looking for a testimony book, you might want to read mine. Chapter 29 Revisited

Samantha Li Night Song by Tricia Goyer is Christian fiction set in WWII. Tricia Goyer is one of those good non-cheesy Christian authors. Slightly similar.

MaryJo Dawson thank you for great recommendations, Sheryl. I have also read The Heavenly Man, and would recommend it to anyone, a tremendous story, very humbling.

MaryJo Dawson almost forgot! also want to add my recommendation to the one made several months ago for Brucho by Bruce Olson. if it's still in print, it is another must read for lovers of biographies of individuals used in a fantastic way for the Lord.

Samantha Li I've read lots of good Christian and WWII biographies.
Things We Couldn't Say is as similar to The Hiding Place as you could really get.

YES. I just got it but haven't read it. Go to this site.
rutasepetys.com

A Lithuanian woman goes back and traces history through her family and other survivors of Stalin's regime. Watch the short video and you will be sold! "Between shades of Gray".

Adelheide Gods' Smuggler, by Brother Andrew, and The Cross and the Switchblade, by David Wilkerson, are both co-authored by the same couple (John and Elizabeth Sherrill) who co-authored The Hiding Place, and are likewise well-written, exciting, and worthwhile. Both are missionary stories: the first of dangerous treks and hairs-breadth escapes behind the Iron Curtain; the second of a man's outreach to gangs and street kids in Inner New York City.

message 30: by Rachel (last edited Feb 04, 2013 02:16PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Rachel The Small Woman (The Inn Of The Sixth Happiness) by Alan Burgess is a great biography about Gladys Aylward, who survived the Japanese invasion in China during WWII and the rise of communism. Wonderful book!

Karen Lauren wrote: "Evidence Not Seen: A Woman's Miraculous Faith in the Jungles of World War II

I loved that book.

Peggy Hendrick I really liked "A Town Like Alice" by Nevil Shute. It is about a young English woman who finds herself in Malaya during the Japenese invasion...She and several other women and children are forced by their Japanese captors to march through the country from one place to another...they made a movie about it but the book is much better...I've read it at least twice.

message 33: by Nola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nola Lorraine "Tramp for the Lord" also by Corrie ten Boom or "God's Smuggler" by Brother Andrew - incidentally that last one was co-written by the same authors who co-wrote The Hiding Place.

Teressa Adelheide wrote: "Gods' Smuggler, by Brother Andrew, and The Cross and the Switchblade, by David Wilkerson, are both co-authored by the same couple (John and Elizabeth Sherrill) who co-authored The Hiding Place, and..."

"God's Smuggler" was the book I was going to recommend. Corrie ten Boom had a prolific writing career. I'm not sure you can get to the end of her books.

Teressa Rachel wrote: "The Small Woman (The Inn Of The Sixth Happiness) by Alan Burgess is a great biography about Gladys Aylward, who survived the Japanese invasion in China during WWII and the rise of communism. Wonde..."

This is a great book. It was also made into a movie, maybe in the '40's.

message 36: by Jean (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jean Coleman You may really enjoy my book, "Chapter 29 Revisited" which is the testimony of how I heard the voice of God in 1972, gave my heart to Jesus and how my life was dramatically changed. This recent rewrite is the fifth edition of the book and it is now in five different languages. Who would have ever thought that forty years after I met Jesus that I would be traveling all around the world sharing the gospel. It isn't as dramatic as "The Hiding Place" perhaps, but you will have to admit when you read it that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. The book is available through Amazon.com in paperback or for your Kindle. Chapter 29 Revisited by Jean Coleman

Carol "This is a great book. It was also made into a movie, maybe in the '40's."

Be careful with the movie though. The book is much better and iirc, Gladys Aylward was not happy with how she was characterized in the movie.

message 38: by Philip (last edited Feb 24, 2013 02:14PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Philip Paul similar to this is Lois Lowry's Number the Stars.

Also try Dietrich Bonhoeffer's The Cost of Freedom or [Book: The_Cost_of_Discipleship]

Elizabeth Check out Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand... such an amazing story!

Samantha Li I love Unbroken!!!! Not quite like The Hiding Place but a definite must read for all teenagers and adults. There is seriously no other book like it. Not your average dry all-facts biography but extremely well researched.

"Of Whom the World Was Not Worthy" by Marie Chapian, is the true story of Christian Yugoslavians, who's faith held, during the years the German tanks swept through their country, bringing war, famine, cold. Amazing story of the faithfulness of God to His faithful people.

MaryJo Dawson Lena wrote: ""Of Whom the World Was Not Worthy" by Marie Chapian, is the true story of Christian Yugoslavians, who's faith held, during the years the German tanks swept through their country, bringing war, fami..."

Lena! I read that years ago, and was so moved by that story! I've never met anyone else who read it before. Anyone who enjoys well written true stories of the Lord's faithfulness should give this a look and see.

Yes! By all means.

MaryJo Dawson Lena, perhaps you or someone else here have read another book.... cannot remember the name of it, it was about a young missionary wife in Indonesia during WWII, she and her husband, plus many others were in prisoner of war camps - her husband died in one, separated from her - early in the war, and she writes about the entire experience, including her own 3 years held prisoner. I am almost certain her first name was Darlene. another fantastic read.

Hi MaryJo - I googled the description of this book and came up with a couple possibilities. One is Jungle Wife. The other, Evidence Not Seen. Hope this helps! Let me know. :)

After looking at the description I think it is Evidence Not Seen.

MaryJo Dawson Evidence Not Seen is The book, all, and if you enjoyed The Hiding Place or Of Whom the World Was Not Worthy, this is a book for you.
thank you Leena.

MaryJo Dawson I want to mention another book - it has been mentioned on Goodreads in another discussion before. It is called The Guest House, The witnesses at Nuremberg, a memoir by Countess Kalnoky. this lady struggles with her faith with all she experiences and sees, but she is a moral and fine woman who becomes a hostess at a house in Nuremberg during the famous trials right after the war. if you enjoy biographies and WWII history you may want to look for this one.
