Now I figure that Vampires are Gothic. That's a given. So what about some recommendations for non-sparkly vampire books?

The Space Vampires by Colin Wilson Dracula Unbound by Brian Aldiss

These are two I love.

(Although the first one is sci-fi)

A classic in many people's eyes.

Thanks Jac, just added it to my to-read list. I'll also add it to our bookshelf now.

I agree, a very scary book, back in the days when vampires kicked-butt.

Ooh, Amanda Hocking's series My Blood Approves? And House of Night series by the Cast ladies, and Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, and of course the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward because who wouldn't want their own Black Dagger boy ;D

Lynxie Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist was a non-sparkly vampire story... not necessarily a good one, but a book about non-sparkly vamps!

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh! I saw the 2008 movie of that one (not the more recent). Thanks, Lynxie, added. Can you add it to the Gothic Tastes bookshelf too?

This is the movie:

Nenia Campbell (neniacampbell)

this is a really good one. it's gritty, with a strong female protagonist, and the vampires are NOT attractive--plus, it's not ya!

this is a creepy gothic retelling of dracula a la dexter or hannibal.

this one is surprisingly good. actually, heathcliff as a vampire explains so much of his erratic behavior.

Yay Pikachu! I knew if I could lure you over here, we'd get some great things happening in this group. :)

Denise Verrico | 5 comments These below, for me, are the modern classic authors of vampire fiction. Dracula (Stoker) and Carmilla (Le Fanu) are earlier must-reads.
Fred Saberhagan
Anne Rice
Poppy Z. Brite
Richard MathesonChelsea Quinn Yarbro

Added, thanks Pikachu. :)

Helena (wlcm2thdwn) | 1 comments I am sure that 'NOCTURNE' by SYRIE JAMES is one of the best Vamp ooks I have ever read. No sparkle here!
