Bryek | 273 comments I am reading two different books, The Unremembered and Advent

and after these I am thinking of starting The Magicians.

message 102: by Jonathan Cate (new)

Jonathan Cate | 57 comments I reverted to lurker mode lately, but I'm back now. I've been working through the Dresen file's this much and I'm almost done with Summer Knight. When I wrap that up I'll switch to The Magicians. After that I have a few options to sort out.

message 103: by Almira (new)

Almira (Imbre) | 17 comments I'm listening to Pandora's Star and reading that new Nocturnal book by Sigler. Probably won't read the Magicians...the very last thing I need is more Harry Potter :(

Wow, Einnyen, the Darkover novels! Serious blast from the past there :)

message 104: by Mauro (new)

Mauro (maurog) I'm finishing 1984 and today I started The Magicians. I'm also reading "I Am America (And so can you)" by Stephen Colbert. It's so funny that I can't read it on the subway because I laugh to hard and people look at me.

message 105: by Eric (new)

Eric French (frenchie612002) | 1 comments I'm reading Robopocalypse and also going to start A Game of Thrones. Very excited for both!!

message 106: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome | 7217 comments I'm 30% into Sigler's Nocturnal. Holding my interest so far. Very dark.

message 107: by Kim (new)

Kim | 477 comments Currently reading the (supposed) steampunk novel Angelmaker, the Russian dystopian classic We and the rather disappointing The Folklore of Discworld.

message 108: by Kate (new)

Kate O'Hanlon (kateohanlon) | 778 comments Just picked up The Steel Seraglio, which is written by Mike, Linda and Louise Carey. (The idea of a family unit harmonious enough to write a novel together is completely alien to me, but kind of cool.)

message 109: by terpkristin (new)

terpkristin | 4407 comments I finally finished listening to the first Wild Cards volume (review). Overall, I liked the first half of the book much more than I liked the second half, but it was all in all a pretty good listen.

I've moved onto listening to Earthseed, which (assuming work doesn't get in the way) I should be able to finish pretty quickly--it's just under 8 hours long and I'm more than a quarter through already). I'm also still reading (mostly on Kindle, but I also have the audiobook) our pick, The Magicians. I'm into the second part of the book and it's not moving as quickly for me as the first part did, but we also just started a very busy test phase at work, so that's not helping.

message 110: by Keith (new)

Keith (keithatc) I read Heartless by Gail Carriger in a day, so I didn't even have time to post that I was "currently reading" it. I love that series.

About 2/3 of the way through Infoquake. Love it so far. Very much a throwback to the cyberpunk style of Bruce Sterling, when cutthroat businesses, hackers, and programmers were the center of the action instead of mercenaries, cops, and killers.

message 111: by kvon (new)

kvon | 563 comments Echoes of Betrayal (book #3 of 5?) from Elizabeth Moon, in her post-Paksennarion D&D setting. A fun read, but I'm ready for some concluding. Large cast of POVs.

Keith, I refer to Infoquake as 'businesspunk'.

message 112: by Charles (new)

Charles | 248 comments Currently reading the Hugo nominees, except the novel category.

message 113: by Agatha (new)

Agatha (agathab) | 130 comments Reading Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (Dirk Gently #1) which I'm thoroughly enjoying and Infected by Scott Sigler until my copy of Nocturnal shows up on my doorstep.

I'm also rereading several books as exam preparation (I haven't listed these because they're work not leisure and I generally list only books I read for fun on Goodreads), such as Germinal and The Red and the Black which is one of my personal favourites and thus I don't really need to reread it but whatever. I've also got several scripts on Chateaubriand but I don't think that counts.

message 114: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (crispus) | 15 comments Finally got around to Vortex. Enjoying the interwoven story format so far.

Tamahome | 7217 comments Charles wrote: "Currently reading the Hugo nominees, except the novel category."

That's just what the voters do.

message 116: by Jess (new)

Jess | 9 comments I'm reading The Name of the Wind instead of the proper book pick for this month because I needed a new audiobook and the UK's audible store doesn't have The Magicians *shakes fist* so I'll have to put it on my "to read" for after I've finished all the physical books I'm in the middle of. I was completely sucked in as soon as Kvothe started telling his story. If anyone hasn't read it, it really is brilliant, and the person who reads the audiobook it is great.

message 117: by Stuart (new)

Stuart (stuartellis) | 47 comments As well as The Magicians, I've read Red Seas Under Red Skies and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms so far this month, both of which were great. On my to-read pile are Infernal Devices (steampunk) and She Lover Of Death (a not entirely serious pulpy Russian detective novel).

message 118: by Bassam (new)

Bassam Islam (elbaso) | 3 comments I'm reading The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
I'm about 3 and a half hours in to the Audiobook, and I already feel the epic story washing over me.
The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss

message 119: by Agatha (new)

Agatha (agathab) | 130 comments I find it funny that so many people lately have been reading The Name of the Wind considering I had just finished reading it a month ago after countless months of refusing.

I really don't know why I formed such an aversion to a book I'd heard only good things about, but it happens sometimes. Luckily I got over it, because The Name of the Wind is fantastic.

Also, wanted to add that I finished reading Dirk Gently #1 and have started on Soulless (Parasol Protectorate #1) which I bought today along with some other books (including next month's Laser) and consequently will have nothing to eat tomorrow.

message 120: by Mark (new)

Mark (romeosidvicious) I am going to have to get Magicians but currently this month has looked like (Give the teen girl fic a break I read them so I can know what my daughter is reading!):

Read so far:

Torn - Amanda Hocking
Ascend - Amanda Hocking
The Electric Church - Avery Cates
The Digital Plague Avery Cates
Thief's Covenant - Ari Marmell

Reading:

Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss

message 121: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 2433 comments Finished For Heaven's Eyes Only and started Ghost Of A Smile, both by Simon R. Green, and will be following up with The Bride Wore Black Leather -- the latest installments in all three of his current series, which share the same universe and occasionally have minor crossovers or references to each other.

message 122: by Charles (new)

Charles | 248 comments Tamahome wrote: "Charles wrote: "Currently reading the Hugo nominees, except the novel category."

I'm not a voter :)

message 123: by [deleted user] (new)

Off into non-fiction territory with "Terrible Swift Sword" by Bruce Catton and "A Guide to the Battles of the American Revolution" by Savas and Dameron. On the fiction side, I'm just finishing up Burroughs' "Gods of Mars".

message 124: by Napoez3 (new)

Napoez3 | 158 comments After finishing The Magicians, I started with The Wavering of Haruhi Suzumiya.

If I have time I would like to read Red Seas Under Red Skies.

Pickle | 192 comments Jess wrote: "I'm reading The Name of the Wind instead of the proper book pick for this month because I needed a new audiobook and the UK's audible store doesn't have The Magicians *shakes fist* so I'll have to ..."

i finished The Name of the Wind and thought it was really poor and nothing has made me want to follow the story of the wonderfully brilliant but poor Qvothe.

I read The Lies of Locke Lamora prior to The Name of the Wind, thought it was brilliant and want to continue reading his story.

message 126: by Brett (new)

Brett | 11 comments My lord, I'm reading several hundred books! The Magicians, 3 star wars books, The second book of Assassins Apprentice, Royal Assassin, and about four other things

I totally lemming that series, dropped out about book 10. I guess I'll come back someday...

message 128: by Brian (new)

Brian Wright (slink87) | 4 comments I'm a newly joined member. I read constantly have since childhood. Anyways right Now I'm reading through Steven Erikson's exallant Malazan Empire of the fallen trilogy. I'm on book 6 The bonehunters about a third way in.

message 129: by Matthew (new)

Matthew I just joined the group and am starting The Magicians!

message 130: by Doug (new)

Doug (theonceandfuturedoug) Currently reading: "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Night-Circu...

I'm about half-way through it so far and while it's not exactly action-packed (yet) and it does take a bit to get into, I love the characters and the world she's creating. So far I very much recommend it.

message 131: by Kim (new)

Kim | 477 comments I've been reading the Eddie LaCrosse series this month and am on to the latest one released, Dark Jenny.

I've also started a book I keep hearing a lot about, Retribution Falls.

Another "marmite" book it seems. I, too, really liked it. But I know a lot of people who didn't.

message 133: by Doug (new)

Doug (theonceandfuturedoug) I can understand them not. I mean, it's certainly not everyone's cup of tea and you have to like this kind of book and be willing to see where it's going. If the ending is good I'm going to love it, otherwise it'll just be a meh book that could have been better.

message 134: by Brittany (last edited Apr 20, 2012 07:42AM) (new)

Brittany (brittanywrites) | 14 comments I'm currently listening to The Lightening Thief after attempting to listen to "The Magicians" and not making it. I just finished the The Sherlockian, which was quite a lot of fun. I also have Welcome to Bordertown, Steampunk!, and The Way of Kings. Definitely can't wait for classes to be over so I can start getting to my "To Read" list!

message 135: by Linguana (new)

Linguana | 151 comments I am totally loving Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor. I did not expect to be so blown away but it's a really good read. So good in fact, that I put my Heinlein away for it.

message 136: by Monique (new)

Monique | 4 comments I am reading Soulless while finishing up The Magicians. Good reading so far this month.

message 137: by Kevin (last edited Apr 20, 2012 03:02PM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 1081 comments I'm reading That Hideous Strength and A Walk on the Nightside.

message 138: by Kate (new)

Kate O'Hanlon (kateohanlon) | 778 comments I spent a lot of today glowering at my bookshelves unable to pick anything, but I've finally settled on Occultation and Other Stories, because I've liked some of Laird Barron's other stories, because it won the Shirley Jackson Award, and because Laird Barron is a really cool name.

message 139: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 2433 comments Finished Ghost Of A Smile and am on to The Bride Wore Black Leather. After that . . . Something not written by Simon R. Green.

message 140: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Martinson | 24 comments I'm reading the Hunger Games series and the first volume in the six part epic 'World in Crisis" by Winston S. Churchill. I'm actively avoiding fantasy right now because I'm trying to write my own novel and I am very worried about it affecting my tone.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments So I need someone to tell me what to do - I'm thinking of trying out paranormal romance or urban fantasy, both genres I'm unfamiliar with. Go vote at my blog and I'll do what you say. :P

Otherwise I'm reading Embassytown and actually enjoying it quite a bit. Nominated for practically everything; thought it was time.

It's great! If you like Firefly, you'll enjoy it a lot.

message 143: by AndrewP (new)

AndrewP (andrewca) | 2667 comments Getting so excited reading The Magicians that I had to take a break and read something else before my head explodes.

So started Allan Quatermain on audio and A Hymn Before Battle on kindle.

message 145: by Aeryn98 (new)

Aeryn98 | 176 comments I'm re-reading the Malazan series by Steven Erikson. Interspersed with those I take a break and so am now reading Sword Song for a bit of a change.

I am also listening to Angelmaker. Love it. Nick Harkaway is fast becoming a favorite of mine.

message 146: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 919 comments Hmm. It's been a while since I posted what I'm reading. My recent finished reads are A Game of Thrones and House of Leaves. HoL turned out to be my favorite read of all time. I became passionate about the book.

I'm currenlty 75% into The Recognitions. Taking a break because 1000 pages of satire, no matter how great a characterization or social commentary, can be tedious. Now I''m onto Ghost Story and Frankenstein

message 147: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 919 comments I also finished Naked Lunch. That book was a trip and definitely worth reading. This was published in the 1950's, but it would still be hard to stomach for some people nowadays. I like distinctive books, and this falls under that category.

I voted but when I did, what I voted for was losing. We'll see how it plays out for ya. :)

message 149: by Gillian (new)

Gillian (glkrose) | 12 comments I'm hoping to pick up The Magicians from my library once I finish Anna Karenina (which I will hopefully finish sometime this weekend). I'm also reading Eragon.
