Author Profiles Need Deleting

I cleaned up some incorrect book entries, and put them all where they belonged, under G.K. Chesterton. These are now empty and need to be deleted. Thanks!

There is no way to directly delete author profiles. They can be merged; or they can wait for the blank author script, which will run after the site upgrades currently in process are done.

What does it mean to merge an author profile? Is it something i could do?

These will have to be deleted by the script, because they are all incorrect ("Chesterton Gk Chesterton", for example), and empty.

In this case, these were all incorrect, and I just edited the book records.

Now I will be able to find this link more quickly in the future, should I need it. Thanks.

What is fixed, exactly? Did you merge all of them? They weren't valid author names.

Thank you, but I think it would have been all right to let the script delete them. They were invalid or incorrect names. They weren't alternate spellings of the author's name. But, no harm done. And, now I think I finally understand how/when/why to merge an author profile.

Why does this matter? The process and results are the same.

It doesn't matter, in the end. I just prefer to see incorrect data be removed, rather than merged. I didn't imagine you would be upset with me for thinking that way. Sorry.

O, no, no. Process of combining keeps data from all participants, but merging doesn't. You don't have to worry. Invalid data is gone. :)

Thanks, Iluzija. I just figured if there is a script that runs to delete empty profiles, it saves you, or another librarian, the time needed to merge "invalid" entries.

I'm not at all upset. I am a bit confused.

These author profiles were all created because someone or some script entered the author's name incorrectly (last name first, or the last name twice). After correcting the book records, to remove these incorrect author names, (often they were listed as second author on the book), I just think someone should be able to delete these (empty) incorrect author profiles. It just seems more logical (to me) than merging them all under some correct author's name. And, if there's a script to do this, then I figure let them be until the script cleans them up. That's really all I was trying to say.

Someone had added two books from the author without the second name initial. I fixed the books but the wrong profile remains.

As noted in the help file best to copy and paste author name from the edit page as that will capture any spaces in the name

Paula, if you're trying to answer me, I'm still confused, because ED and TW are two separate authors and the 'author profiles' for them as a *team* should never have been created in the first place.

I fixed the books associated with each 'team' of ED+TW, but the teams still come up when one uses the 'add book/author' link for the comment box, even though the profiles are empty.

Merge them both together and then merge the existing one in to either unknown or one of the single author profiles.

Or merge each of the "team" profiles into one of the single author profiles

I think this author needs deleting. I'm correcting the author on the book, so it shouldn't show up, but I have no idea where this came from. I can delete it, but I wanted to be sure. Thanks.
