Karen White (karenwhiteaudiobooknarrator) | 175 comments Just wanted to let y'all know about a video contest the Audiobook Publisher Association is running, "Get Caught Listening". Last year there were very few entries, so you might have a good chance of winning the cash! If you have ANY video making skills at all, think about entering. All the info is here:
http://www.audiopub.org/getcaughtlist...

Good luck!

I only listened to and never read this book but I think this is one that's better listened to. The narrators are terrific. They differentiate between the letters and bring each character alive. This is still one of my favorite audio books, right up there with The Help - another book I think is better on audio.

message 254: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 1546 comments I agree about the narration Ellen (for Guernsey) it was excellent :)

Chrissie | 1529 comments I have just finishedThe Colour. Maybe I am beginning to like fiction! This was good.
Review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

In the beginning I wasn't sure if I liked the narrating. I thought maybe it was too melancholic. By the end, I had no complaints. In fact I thought it was great. She sings songs in a beautiful voice.

Wendy T | 0 comments Over the past few days I've finished: Guilty Wives by James Patterson. I really enjoyed the suspense and strong characters of this book. I gave this book 4 stars.

Traveling With Pomegranates: A Mother-Daughter Story by Sue Monk Kidd. I thought this book was okay, but have to say this book was not what I thought it would be. I felt this story slow going throughout the entire book. I gave this book 2 stars.

Today I started The Next Always by Nora Roberts

Hey Karen I had no idea you narrated The Peach Keeper The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen when I was listening to it last year. Great job :)

MissSusie | 2420 comments Finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society loved it just as much the second time through I really enjoyed the narration done by Paul Boehmer, Susan Duerden, Rosalyn Landor, John Lee, and Juliet Mills it helped keep all the characters straight.

Tomorrow I am finally startingInsurgent by, Veronica Roth narrated by, Emma Galvin I thought she did a really good job on the first one so have high hopes for this one!

I'm eager to hear what you think of Insurgent. I listened to the first book and thought it was good, but I'm not really a dystopia kind of gal--even though I read and liked The Hunger Games trilogy.

message 262: by Jeanie (new)

Jeanie | 4024 comments I finished the latest Sookie Stackhouse--Deadlocked--by Charlaine Harris and read by Johanna Parker. I liked the story better than the last several and Parker continues to do a good job with the narration.

I also finished the final Kane Chronicle, The Serpent's Shadow. Decent finish and it will be interesting to see if Riordan actually does bring this pantheon into his other stories as was hinted. Katherine Kellgren portrays Sadie accurately, but too shrill and obnoxious for my liking.

message 263: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie | 1529 comments I am listening to Travels in Siberia, which I find interesting, informative and quite funny. So far at least. For me, the narrator's spead is perfect. The author is reading his own book; he is not doing a bad job.

I am half done and Insurgent is really good and Emma Galvin does a nice job at the narration but I had to laugh at a bit of a blooper when she said "She put her mouth over her hand" so am curious about getting the print version and seeing if it was an editing problem in the print version or if it is a narrator goof!

message 265: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 1546 comments Jeanie I think in some cases people who loved Hunger Games rated Insurgent higher because they missed the Hunger Games and it somewhat reminded them of it. It has rec'd a lot of 5 star ratings and I just don't see it myself. Oh well. To each their own.

Also, I think the Divergent series has more direct YA appeal because the romance is a clearer part of the story. I did find the concept of the world in Divergent to be interesting, but I am absolutely not an adrenalin junkie and being forced into the POV of someone who is was uncomfortable. Normally, with a first person POV I identify strongly with the narrator, but I couldn't in this case. Not since being trapped inside Bella Swan's head have I so dearly wanted, yet been unable, to distance myself from a character--although in Bella's case I wanted to slap her silly or give her a good shake until her teeth rattled.

message 268: by MissSusie (new)

MissSusie | 2420 comments The thing I enjoy about the Divergent series is there is no love triangle in it yes there is a teen romance but at least it seems to be growing realistically or at least as realistically as it can in their situation. As Heidi said to each their own but I really enjoy this series!

Jeanie | 4024 comments Susie wrote: "The thing I enjoy about the Divergent series is there is no love triangle in it yes there is a teen romance but at least it seems to be growing realistically or at least as realistically as it can ..."

Like I said, I like the ideas in the series and, yeah, the romance. So, hehlp me out here... is there a lot of wreckless adrenalin-seeking behavior or can I settle into the heroine's head without wanting to scream "But I don't want to jump off the Sears Tower!"

She actually had to start chemo the day her book tour was supposed to start last year. But another author (whose book I also happened to read - Meg Waite Clayton) basically talked about Sarah's book along with hers on tour. It was so lovely of her.
And again, I think Sarah is doing really well. And I hope you are, too!

Javasapien | 272 comments Finished C J Box' 4th Joe Picket novel called Trophy Hunt. It's a great series by a great author and pretty well narrated. This one was a little more gross/gory than previous ones, which I didn't enjoy but overall it was still a great listen.

Now I'm on the first in the "Her Royal Spyness" series, by Rhys Bowen. I had be debating whether to purchase it from audible because I wasn't sure if it would fit my taste or not, but while I was debating some kind soul here posted a link to where audible was giving a free download of it. I am enjoying it so I'll probably be adding the remaining 4 to my audible wishlist. The narrator is Katherine Kellgren who is excellent, as many people here have already expressed.

message 277: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 1546 comments Loved Her Royal Spyness! I read the book then listened to the audiobook (Katherine is awesome).

message 278: by MissSusie (new)

MissSusie | 2420 comments Finished Insurgent by, Veronica Roth narrated by Emma Galvin really liked this one but one heck of a cliffhanger!

Now listening to A Place of Secrets by Rachel Hore narrated by, Jilly Bond.

John | 3917 comments I have finished listening to The House in Paris at last! The first part and third parts were interesting, while the middle seemed interminable - I kept looking at mp3 counter mumbling, "Are we THERE yet!" For those who may be interested in the possibility of French scenery and culture - there's very little. I'd recommend reading the print version to skim Part Two.

message 280: by LindaD (new)

LindaD (freedom333) Listening to Folly and Glory by Larry McMurtry(New Mexico) with Dog on It (A Chet and Bernie Mystery, #1) by Spencer Quinn by Spencer Quinn(Arizona) waiting in the wings.

Needed some serious silliness after back to back James Lee Burke novels - Jolie Blon's Bounce(Lousiana) and Swan Peak(Montana) in my 50 states challenge.

message 283: by Susan (new)

Susan (chlokara) I loved The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak when I read it in book form several years ago. I just finished listening to the audio book narrated by Alan Corduner, and it was fantastic. Corduner has a beautiful voice, and he is a wonderful actor with the expression that he brings to the reading. And, one of my alltime favorite characters is the gentle, stalwart Hans Huberman. I highly recommend the audiobook to all.

Wendy, I finished The Witness a week or so. It was the perfect vacation read. I pace myself on NR because the formula is so familiar to me but she does do a good job with suspense plots. I'm looking for another, and recommendations?

I loved this audiobook too. It has become my all time favorite, and one I would listen to again.

message 293: by Lyn (new)

Lyn (lynsusan) | 8 comments The only reason I gave this two stars is that it was Waaaayyy too complicated on Audio.......my husband and I listened to this for a good 1/2 hour before we made the decision to move onto something else on our roadtrip. Even though I have read many Tolkien books, just the introduction alone of characters and background was very difficult to follow. Maybe another time. Interestingly enough, Goodreads says that the Audio CD format is not available, but it is sitting in front on me as I write this; published by Harper Collins AudioBooks!: J.R.R. Tolkien "The Children of Hurin", The Children of Húrin (Middle-Earth Universe) by J.R.R. Tolkien

message 294: by Lyn (new)

Lyn (lynsusan) | 8 comments The Law of Nines by Terry Goodkind
Excellent! Terry Goodkind tends to be a bit "wordy" on the descriptive-narrative, but the Audio book was most enjoyable. Narrator Mark Deakins did a great job and I will look for his other work - comments are welcome!

I have to say I love my public library.

@John
This version is read by a Ron McLarty.

I hadn't heard about Travels with Charley: In Search of America until this week. Found it in one of the lists here at Goodreads. Looking forward to it.

Wendy T | 0 comments Over the past two weeks I've managed to finish:
A Red Herring Without Mustard by Alan Bradley. I really enjoy this series and this was another good read. I gave this book 3 stars.
What it Was by George Pelecanos. I thought this book was okay. I gave it 2 stars.
Standoff by Sandra Brown. I enjoyed this book, but have read better by this author. I gave this book 3 stars.
Calling Mr. Lonely Hearts by Laura Benedict. This was such as good suspense novel. I gave this book 5 stars.
Stay Close by Harlan Coben. I found this book really creepy and suspenseful. I gave this book 4 stars.
The Expats: A Novel by Chris Pavone. I have to say I liked this book. I have to say I liked the second part of this book much more then the first part. I gave this book 3 stars.

I am now starting Defending Jacob by William Landay

message 299: by MissSusie (new)

MissSusie | 2420 comments Wendy will be curious what you think of Defending Jacob!

I just finished A Place of Secrets by, Rachel Hore narrated by, Jilly Bond both author and narrator were new to me and will be seeking out more from both of them. If you are a fan of Kate Morton or Susanna Kearsley I think you will like this one!

Now starting The Lost Years by, Mary Higgins Clark narrated by, Jan Maxwell who I recently found out went to the same high school as I did.

message 300: by Janice (new)

Janice | 0 comments In the last couple of weeks I have listened to: The Sisters by Nancy Jensen. It was okay, the story was interesting, I just didn't ever feel very engaged with any of the characters. Cassandra Campbell does a nice job on the narration.
Out Of Range by C.J. Box and narrated by David Chandler. I had read all the others in this series in print, until someone in this group mentioned liking the audio version so I tried the audio for this one, and really liked it. I will try to get the next ones in the series on audio if they are available from my library.
Grave Sight was my first time to read anything by Charlaine Harris; I enjoyed this new twist on a paranormal mystery, and Alyssa Bresnahan does a great job narrating. The story and characters were all interesting.
I thought I was getting out of control, with 60 to 70 books now downloaded waiting for me to listen; then I saw someone here posted that they have over 800 audio books to choose from. I felt much better about my addiction, but also a little jealous!
