Did anyone else read this for school?

I read this in the 8th grade. We subsequently watched a movie adaptation. We were also tested on this book at some point. I remember that the teacher made us do this specific test in the dark. Nobody was allowed to make a sound... no coughing, no sharpening of pencils, no leaving for the restroom. If someone was to make a sound before the entire class was finished testing, she declared that class dead. I remember I was really sick when I took that test: coughing (dog barking is more like it), sneezing, and sniffeling - the whole enchilada! Somehow I managed to muffle all of that and suffer through the entire test without "killing my class"! Come to think of it... I think my class - there were like four seperate English classes - was the only class that didn't die that day... Thinking back on it now, that was a really cool English teacher!

I didn't have to read it for school..Even though the book and the "story" was talked about. I didnt read it until last year. I read it just because... :-)

I read it during school. It was part of our curriculum to learn while in English class. I loved it and at the time I really didn't like reading historical writings and such... but this book really got me into reading more about history...especially during the times of the Nazis. I found it more interesting that I thought it would be.

During English class in the 8th grade, we read the play version of Anne's diary, but although it was encouraged, it was not mandatory to read it. Still, I had nothing else to read, and I thought that it'd be interesting to read. So, no I did not have to read it for school, but I read it anyway.

I'm actually glad I didn't have to do it for school, because I despise assigned book assignments. I am a huge reader, and it almost physically hurts me to hear people hating on good books so much just because they were for a school project, but I can't blame them. When it becomes mandatory and not at your own comfortable pace, it just sucks all the enjoyment out of it.

Since, as I mentioned earlier, I did get to read this outside of school work and what not, I actually thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gave me a great new perspective on WW2 that I really appreciated.

For starters...I'm from the Philippines so we have a different curriculum for world literature.

In HS, we never had to read it as a book review but I chose this to review personally as a teacher's pet kind of thing.

In college, we were asked to read it as English majors...

Back when I still taught English I include this in discussion and assign it to one of the top ten in every class I had.

Liking it is a different thing altogether... It's hard not to like it because it's interesting. The Nazi era, Elektra complex and the fact that it's told by a little girl who had to hide from it all. These immediately draw attention.

But it is not for the narrow minded folks. You really had to put yourself in her shoes to understand the gravity of her situation and why she thought of the stuff that practically made her controversial.

I heard there's a better and an "unedited" version which showed more of the Elektra complex. Haven't read that but I plan to once I get a copy or find it online. :)

My sentiments exactly. I probably would've enjoyed it much more if it hadn't been a school assignment. Assigning reading is much like forcing good food down your throat--you just don't enjoy it as much.

i had to read it for school but more because she was also dutch and she was in the war. i read it before i started high school so i already knew it when i had to read it for school purposes.

I read it when I was in 6th grade.
I thought it was OK, but It probably was a little advanced for me then.

I believe it was an assigned read in 8th or 9th grade. My 15 year son hasn't been assigned this book, but I wish his school would add it to their list. It's so much better than the books he's been assigned.

Anne Frank's diary is written by a thirteen year old girl in the middle of a world war. she had to hide from Nazis who wanted her dead because of her religion and she had to grow up with all those adults watching over her. yes, this is the perfect setting for writing a comedy!

Both books, have their pro's and also con's you've got to admit. So IMO I think both books are wonderful and special in their own little ways.

Didn't love it in the beginning, but loved it at the end..

Umm I think I have but it was called The Diary of Anne Frank. I also read To Kill A Mockingbird in high school. Not sure when with the other book but it was definitely for school.

volgens mij leest meer dan de helft van Nederland dit boek voor school. De andere helft leest het omdat ze in Nederland ondergedoken heeft gezeten (en iedereen het er over heeft). maar inderdaad een heel mooi boek!

I think you would like To Kill a Mockingbird, it's a really beautiful book. The film is a masterpiece as well.

That's patently false. Ballpoint pens were around and popular in Europe as early as the 1930s.
