February reading poll - for discussion and campaigning of listed books

You can make posts here to help get the novel you wish read by giving reasons why you wish it as the monthly reading to help it get more votes.

Note: This is meant only for those novels already listed in the current poll as a way of campaigning to help receive more votes or to discuss them.

I nominate The Riyria Revelations series by Michael J Sullivan. The first book in the series is called The Crown Conspiracy.

This is new author that has just been published for the first time and I think that we should give him a try. His first book The Crown Conspiracy just came out in October, and it sounds very interesting.

I meant this thread is for discussing what book you wish voted for in the current Poll for the February reading. The list of books for the poll has already been chosen (find the list at right). I made this thread to have somewhere for members to post on what you would wish read from that listing to try and help you get others interested enough to vote (ie. for campaigning) :

So what you're saying is that you wanted this thread to be like a 'campaign' thread rather than a 'nomination' thread? So that people could campaign for whichever book they think should be read from the poll list?

Yes ! Its a way to promote the book that you wish read for that month once its been selected. Maybe you can help promote what you wish read to get others interested enough to vote for the same book (eg stating why you think its worth voting for etc). Last poll only had 7 voters so thought this may help get more interested in the poll.

Gotcha... I'd love to help, but I haven't read any of the books listed and don't know enough about any of them to campaign for them. I'll still vote though, name recognition's gotta be good for something! ;)

I cast my vote for The Curse of Chalion because of all the choices, the description of this one intrigues me the most.

I didn't see the Curse of Chalion in the poll, although I would definitely recommend it. In fact, I did. In it's absence I voted for me. I wrote The Flame in the Bowl: Unbinding the Stone to be as different from all the other books I'd ever read as possible. My main rule in the writing was 'if you've seen it done before, don't do it again.'

Marc has the right idea about this thread as i could see there was still some confusion. I know the poll has a comments thread but i hope by having a discussion thread for the books selected in the poll on the main page it would get more interested in the monthly read and so help promote it for more voting. I dont know any of those books that came up selected randomly and maybe other members are in the same situation, so having a discussion thread may help members in making a choice in which novel to vote for.

PS. I will add those books nominated here to the nominated books list, something at the end of the month. But the correct place to nominate a book is the thread 'Book readings - post your nominations here', then they are later added to 'Fantasy novel nominations listing' which then goes thru the process of random selection to find 10 titles to be voted on, with the most voted then becoming the selected book reading of the month.

I'm going to second Marc's book. I keep meaning to get a copy, but Borders keeps sending me these great coupons and I've been buying most of my books there instead of ordering them online. I can't even remember the last time I placed a book order with Amazon.

So far 'The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss' is leading with 4 votes followed by 'The Black Company: The First Chronicle of The Black Company - Glen Cook' with 3 votes.
Our own group author, Marc Vun Kannon has 3rd place with 'The Flame in the Bowl: Unbinding the Stone' jointly with Larry Nivens 'The Magic Goes Away' both with 2 votes.

I looked at all of the books on the list, and none of the others jumped out at me, to be honest. I got a chuckle just reading the description, which is a definite plus. :)

Thank you. I tried to put a good bit of humor in the book, too. Some of it's basically farce or slapstick, a lot of wordplay, some really bad puns. My usual reaction to high levels of seriousness and drama is to throw in a bit of silliness. Just a little bit. I hope you like it.

The Name of the Wind is an excellent book. I put it on the list, right up there with my own. Would I rather my book won? Sure. Unbinding the Stone is a standalone novel, unlike the Name of the Wind, and much less epic in tone, with rather more humor and romance.

Oh, I will, but I do better talking to a person in front of me. I talk about my books, and other people's, at any time and place. I talk about every book my publisher does to anyone who will listen. But I do better answering real questions asked by real people. Pro-active marketing isn't something I do well. Campaigning even less so.

The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss was the book i voted for.

The Black Company was a book i read and disliked and gave away. A impulse buy i regretted badly.

I dont read epic fantasy often since several of the recent years so called good ones was a dissapointment.

Name of the wind sounds more different in some ways. I will have to get it before March.
