C.C. (cchartley) | 26 comments My brother tried to get me to read this series by Laura Joh Rowland. He said he loved the series. I started to read the book he gave me. There is an evil character in it named Yanagisawa. Oh he's so evil, I couldn't finish the book. I couldn't manage getting half way, lol. I just can't stomach his evilness.

That shows how vivid the author could write.

I love Pam, Snape, and Alice! I have yet to read anything from the Black Dagger Brotherhood or Chicagoland series or any of the others you mentioned. A friend of mine is still trying to get me to start the Hollows series....

message 8: by Marcia (new)

Marcia (marcygold) I really LOVE the Chicagoland Series because of Merit. Black Dagger Brotherhood was only OK for me, I quit at Book 6:( I don't recommend it to my friends usually.

My daughter got me hooked on the hollows series, and I love the Dresdin Files. A book that is not a series but really good and I hope becomes another two or three books is Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Love Alice, Pam. I just finished the Kat Adams series, this isn't in order but Demon Song, Blood Song, Siren Song and Isis Collar. Cool.

Who is the author of the Hollow series?

message 13: by L.M. (new)

L.M. Smith (ladymuse82) | 176 comments Author of the Hollows series is Kim Harrison.

One of my all-time favorite book characters is Jenks from the Hollows series:
Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1) by Kim Harrison

One of my all-time most HATED book characters was Dolores Umbridge from the Harry Potter series. Ooooooh how I hated her as much as if she'd been a real person!
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5) by J.K. Rowling

How could I forget Prof. Umbridge!!!! Oh she makes the top 10 list of all time, might as well add Malfoy too!

L.M. Smith (ladymuse82) | 176 comments Pandora listen to your friend. The Hollows series is AWESOME! Before the Hollows series my favorite author was Richard Adams for over 15 years (seriously, I read Watership Down for the first time when I was about 8, then re-read it again and again every few years after that).

Then, in 2010, I discovered The Hollows series and I actually only gave the first book a four-star review but after reading the second I was completely hooked and Kim Harrison rocketed to the top, beating out Adams as my favorite author after more than a decade!

I'd read hundreds of books in between including Twilight and Harry Potter and neither Meyers or Rowling could do that but Harrison's writing is something unique - you'll never experience a world as richly detailed and wholly plausible as The Hollows series.

I only considered Malfoy as mildly irritating, to be honest. Most of the time I don't "hate" bullies because it's too easy to write them off for what they are. All too often they have some kind of secret reason for being the way that they are, in Malfoy's case it was how he was raised.

But nothing pisses me off more than a character who literally and deeply believes that they're right when they're really just ignorant and stubborn. The thing about Umbridge and her supporters that made me hate her/them so much wasn't the horrible things that she/they did, but the fact that they weren't genuinely evil people, they were just terrified, ignorant cowards.

If a character is evil and he or she owns that role then they're evil but at least I can respect them for knowing it and being ok with it.

It's when a character does evil things in the name of cowardice and stupidity that I really hate them - anyone unable to see and accept perfectly sound reason just boils my buzzard.

Oh geesh, here I go again. I told you I hated her as if she were a real person.

Who are some other just ignorant characters who think they're doing the right thing when they're really not or who are just too stubborn to see or believe the truth? I know there are others but right now Umbridge is all I can think about. lol

It's definitely on the list to read. It took me forever to read Old Man's War, Codex Alera, Anita Blake, the Demonata, and Skullduggery Pleasant all great books and recommendations that afterword I was upset I didn't read sooner. I'm certain, I'm going to feel the same way once I start the Hollows.
