Oh wait, the task says dimensions.
So more than one alternate dimension needs to be present?
In The Bone House the characters use lay lines to travel to alternate realities on a quest to find a map and their lost friend. More than one alternate reality is visited, so I think it might work better.

Well Claudia in the first Chronicles of Narnia (The Magician's Nephew) they travel to different dimensions. You don't need to read it to get the story of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, even the characters differ. But I loved it :-) but then again, I am a Narnia geek, so it obviously depends on your taste.
