Good evening friends, I will be your gamemaster for the duration of this event. If you choose to accept the task ahead a small prize might be in your future.

What this entails:

Choose wisely from here on out, because a simple number might make all the difference. It might put you ahead and it might keep you back! - Ok enough with trying to be dramatic :P

What you need to do:

All you have to do is pick 1 number between 1-1000 (If I can think of so many tasks - for now that is the number). Each number will correspond to a certain task that will stay a mystery until chosen.

About the tasks:

Most of the tasks will be straight forward, like things we have had in other challenges: Read a mystery novel or a novel with 2 words in the title. But there will be the select few that will make you wish you chose another number. Some tasks might even involve you doing something or taking a picture of your lamp.

How this works:

Each person chooses a number when they are ready to start - I will then give you the task.

When the task is completed you will get that particular number on the board, and may then ask for a new task.

What do you get:

At the end I will choose a number from one of the tasks completed (randomizer) and the winner will get $15 to spend at Bookdepository or another online shop I can order for you :) I know it might not be much, but I hope that it will be fun and that you guys will participate for that reason :)

Why:

I have wanted to do a challenge where there is a reward at the end, but something with a twist :)

Rules:

- No cheating
- No requesting of another number - Except each person will get to re-choose a number once, and only once. Just say when you wish to forfeit the task and get another one.
- This will start on the 12th of March 2012 until the 12th of January 2013.
- Anyone in the group can join, but please be honest and don't just say you finished a task if you haven't.
- No books under 150 pages unless the task requires otherwise.
- This isn't something you need to continually taking part in, if you get to finish a task that is just one more point for you. If takes some time that is perfectly fine - It is just for the fun and randomness of what you might get!

So who is in? Sign up by just saying you are in.

If anyone has ideas post them so I can add them - Not too crazy tho, easy ones :)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments With ONE THOUSAND TASKS an abundance of A-Z things could be possible(but remove the hard letters!).
Like author name start with letter (...)
Author name end
Surname start
Surname end
First letter in title
Last letter in title
Lead character name starting with
Just using those already adds up to a few tasks. :P

Perhaps you could start off with only 100. And add more as you go along?

message 15: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Whoo, I'm in!

I agree with Crusader - start with 100, it'll be much much easier. You can add about 25 tasks at a time if you need more.

I don't agree with that you should start with 100 tasks. There are already 10 people who want to join and that is only 10 tasks per person. Some of us will read a lot of books in this challenge so you will need more tasks than just a 100. We should try to get as many as we can. And I do have some suggestions:

how about certain words in title:
a placename (country, city etc.)
some kind of food
a drink
a name
a profession
an animal
a colour
a mode of transportation
a weapon
a plant
a location that is not a placename like beach, forest, space etc.
a piece of furniture
a kind of building (villa, castle, house, mansion, hospital, etc)
an emotion or feeling (desire, anger, sad etc)
something to do with weather (rain, wind, snow, cloud etc)
something to do with religion (a cross, star of david, an angel, a demon etc)
a word refering to time (month, week, minute etc.)
a bodypart (foot, hand, arm, eye, etc)
a piece of clothing (pants, shwal, coat, skirt, etc)

Of course you can also use these things for objects on the cover.

An author whose first and last name begin with the same letter.

A book about a library or book
A book about a holiday/vacation
A book about a religious holiday (Chanoeka, Easter, etc.)
A book about a wedding
A book set in a certain time period (middle ages, Victorian, 24th century etc)
A book set on a certain continent (Europe, Asia, Africa etc)
A book about a character of a certain age
A book about a teacher or school

A book by an author whose first letter of his/her first name is also the first letter in the title (for Example: Edith Wharton-first letter in her first name is E so you can read her book Ethan Frome)

Also just read a book in a certain genre. Which can be hilarious if Crusader gets historical romance (sorry Crusader) or if I get something really hardcore SF.

A book with a certain pagecount like between 600 and 630 pages. (different pagecounts can be used)

How are we getting along? How many more tasks do we need?

I'm in, but may not do as many as I would like to - I have a few other challenges that must be completed first I think!

You can create a lot of tasks based on geography:
A specific continent
Specific country (there are 200 odd members of the UN to choose from as a start)
Specific SA province/US state/English county etc

Thanks for your creative energy Lu!

message 22: by Chrizette (new)

Chrizette | 906 comments How about choosing one of the classics . . .
or book published in (specific year)
Some books are also being re-published - how about reading a book that has been re-published.

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Oh no, I just know I'm going to get some impossible task. *Glares at Lu*

message 24: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Seeing as we're throwing ideas around...

Carolien's ideas made me think of translated works - you can read books translated from languages like French, Italian, Russian.

You could also have tasks with a personal theme
- something on the cover that you have a phobia of - spiders, snakes, heights
- a book where the author or main character shares your birth month, star sign
- a book that you got for free (a gift, giveaway, review copy)

What I mean is that I have a excel spreadsheet with a 1000 lines, and I just put tasks in random numbers. So I have random numbers filled in and not from 1 until 1000. So I have no idea how far I am lol.

More tasks would be appreciated :)

message 29: by Claudia (last edited Mar 08, 2012 06:13AM) (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I'm not sure where to get a list, but there are a load of book awards out there. So read a book that won/was nominated for X award would fill up a few tasks.

And perhaps a list of simple words like "fire" "love" "dark" etc for read a book with a title containing the word ... tasks.

message 30: by Chrizette (new)

Chrizette | 906 comments How about a book chosen from your friend's favourites shelve.

message 31: by Lauren (last edited Mar 08, 2012 11:04PM) (new)

Lauren Smith - A book you started but didn't finish
- A book you bought at a sale
- A borrowed book (from the library, a friend, family member, etc)
- A book you've never heard of before getting this task
- A book about a partnership or team (romantic, business, sports, teaming up for an adventure, etc.)
- A book where the main character or narrator is a sociopath/psychopath
- Read one of the group reads chosen from now onwards
- Read a book by an author of the month (for this group)
- A book recommended to you by Goodreads (you'll find recommendations by clicking on the text in the top right-hand corner of the homepage).
- A cross-genre novel (fits into more than one genre, eg. fantasy mystery)
- Read a novel about another book or books. Eg. The Club Dumas is about a manuscript of The Three Musketeers and a book for summoning the devil.

Also, why not go through all our current and previous challenges and take tasks from there? I nicked a few for the suggestions above. If the task was really hard or annoying you can skip it, but otherwise I don't see why you can't use those again.

You could also throw a few wildcards in there where the person can read any book of their choosing. (Without a specific task attached).

Yeah. 100 of the 1000 tasks could be wildcards so if you get one you are very lucky, plus it makes it easy to fill the gaps to reach the 1000 tasks.

message 36: by Barbara (new)

Yeah but a 100 wildcards might be a lot. That would mean 1 in 10 tasks is a wildcard. I would say at the most 50 wildcards then 1 in every 20 tasks is a wildcard.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
I agree 100 might be a bit too many.

message 38: by Lu (new)

Read a book about cooking/chefs or even a cook book then make a dish mentioned in the book and post a picture of it.

read a book about or set in an historical place- Stonehenge, pyramids etc.

read a book that has been reviewed by a blogger that you follow

find a book you gave a 5 star rating to then read another book by that author

read a book by an author who's last name starts with the same letter as yours

read a book that way published this year (2012)

read a book that was published the year you graduated high school

ask a librarian or book store assistant for a recommendation then read that book.

read a book you already own but haven't read

read an award wining book

let Lauren F choose a book for you to read :D

read a book that was published in march (of any year)

read a book that involves royalty

re read a childhood favourite

read a book by an author who writes under a pseudonym

read a book by an author with 3 names eg. judith anne krentz

That's all I have for now my brain is starting to hurt!

message 49: by Riana (new)

Riana | 397 comments Okay so obviously there needs to be challenges that is not so fun to spice it up, so what about reading a book that has a rating of 1 on good reads with lots of negative reviews? (if you choose to use this karma will punish me for this and I will end up with this task so I better start looking for a book like that so long haha)
And maybe you can do something like if you choose number 3 for example, the person who chose number 5 can choose any book for you. There is obviously a chance of no one choosing the second number, so you can either chuck the idea or have extra numbers to follow that one up... Hope that makes sence now o_O
