20.9 Lucky Me!: Bea's Task - I Can’t Wait for Spring!

I love springtime! After a bleak, dark, dreary winter season, I start looking for signs that spring is on the way: the first robin, the first leaves of the crocuses and tulips peaking through the ground, the slight opening at the hint of warmth of the rhododendron and forsythia buds, and the warmth of a longer day. Spring brings hope and anticipation and lures me outside. I even enjoy and welcome the first warm, gentle rain which melts the snow and gives drink to the newly growing plants. And, I love the colors of spring as the flowers and plants wake and open, bringing new color to our yard.

This task is to honor that special time. You will read ONE book. Series titles may be used. REQUIRED: Post which option you chose.

1. BIRD: Read a book that has either a bird(s) on the cover or the name of a bird in the title.
REQUIRED: If you choose the cover option, include a link to the cover.
These lists might help:
The Birds
Birds in the Title

As always, not all books on a GR list will necessarily fit the task.

2. FLOWER: Read a book that has either a flower(s) or a flowering plant on the cover. REQUIRED: Post a link to the cover of the book
These lists might help:
Flowers on Covers
Flower Covers
As always, not all books on a GR list will necessarily fit the task.

3. SPRING WORDS: Read a book with a title that contains one of these words – sun, day, rain, gentle, warm, flower, bird, or any of the color words listed in option 4. Plurals are acceptable. Compound words containing one of these words, such as sunshine or daytime or sunbird are okay. (Note: a compound word is one in which each of the parts of the word is a separate word on its own)

4. COLORS: Read a book with the main cover color of yellow, red, orange, pink, salmon, apricot, purple, lilac, green or cream.
REQUIRED: Post a link to the cover of the book.

5. SPRING: Using the word “springtime,” read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in the word. The initials must be consecutive, but can be forward or backward. Examples: Neil Gaiman with consecutive initials forward, and Robert B Parker, with consecutive first and last initials backward.

Thanks

The Boy Book A Study of Habits and Behaviors, Plus Techniques for Taming Them (Ruby Oliver, #2) by E. Lockhart

message 8: by Bea (last edited Mar 05, 2012 03:31AM) (new)

Bea @Keltie Lee: Sleepaway Girls looks more brown as the dominant color to me. There is grass but it is not a primary color for the cover. No, this one does not work.

@Lavinia: Half-Blood works! Even though there is a lot of black, the color purple is dominant and leaps off the cover to my eyes. It will also work for option 2.

@Kathryn CA: The Boy Book: A Study of Habits and Behaviors, Plus Techniques for Taming Them Yes! Even one flower will work. And, here there are several surrounding her.

message 9: by Bea (new)

Bea @Laurie: Gnome on the Range

This was a bit tough for me to decide; but overall, I think the color is orange. So I will say yes.

Want to check this for green: 40 Love by Madeleine Wickham , Maine Squeeze Maine Squeeze and Banana Splitsville by Catherine Clark , After the Moment by Garret Freymann-Weyr , Such a Pretty Face by Cathy Lamb ?

Want to check for flowers: Return to Rose Cottage by Sherryl Woods , Morning Glory by Diana Peterfreund , Summer Island by Kristin Hannah (or maybe lilac), 21 Proms by David Levithan , Rosebush by Michele Jaffe ?

Would this work for pink: The Secret History of the Pink Carnation (Pink Carnation, #1) by Lauren Willig (or word or flower)?

I like to keep my options open... I guess you could just tell me if any of these don't work.

Jessica, this is a tough one for me as green is over most of the cover. But...what jumps out at me is the white lettering. The task calls for a cover with a "main cover color of...green". I just do not think this fits. Sorry.

Bea JennRenee wrote: "is this enough green Putting Boys on the Ledge (A Girlfriend's Guide to Boys Book #1) by Stephanie Rowe"

JennRenee, the green is not the primary color on this cover. In fact, I would say that white is. I am looking for the colors listed to be the dominant color of the cover, not just a color on the cover. I'm going to say no to this one.

message 23: by Bea (new)

Bea Michelle wrote: "checking for approval on option 4... enough yellow?

Yes, Michelle, I will accept this book as yellow is definitely a dominant color.

Yes, the phoenix is a legendary bird. I will accept it.

Yes, Laurie...this is a good choice for option 4 as it has two of the listed colors.

Bea ★Meghan★ wrote: "Want to check this for cream:

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson - no, this is more beige
My Name Is Mary Sutter A Novel by Robin Oliveira - no, the cream is in the oval and part of the sky but not the main color of the cover
The Star Shack by Lila Castle - yes, I will accept this one for cream as the beach makes up at least half the cover.

Bea Meghan, for green...

40 Love by Madeleine Wickham - Yes!
Maine Squeeze Maine Squeeze and Banana Splitsville by Catherine Clark - no, the predominant color here seems to be blue
After the Moment by Garret Freymann-Weyr - another yes!
Such a Pretty Face by Cathy Lamb - the green here seems to be a mix of black and green and not the predominant color.

message 29: by Bea (last edited Mar 05, 2012 04:16PM) (new)

Bea Meghan, they all work for flowers!

Return to Rose Cottage by Sherryl Woods - rose in title or flowers on cover
Morning Glory by Diana Peterfreund - morning glory in title
Summer Island by Kristin Hannah - flowers on cover and would work for option 4 lilac
21 Proms by David Levithan - flowers on cover
Rosebush by Michele Jaffe - rosebush in title and flowers on cover

message 30: by Bea (last edited Mar 05, 2012 04:16PM) (new)

Bea Meghan, The Secret History of the Pink Carnation (Pink Carnation, #1) by Lauren Willig would work for either option 2 (carnation in title or flower on cover) or for option 4 as pink is a dominant color of cover. Bea

Sam, a mix of colors is fine...and this one is great! Very spring-like in color.

Yes, Jess. That cover is very orange and will work fine. Just be sure you link to the correct cover when posting as this book has lots of covers...many which will not work for this option.

Michael, I will allow both books, although the Nick Of Time is a bit borderline for me.

I am approving it only because the color does stand out to me, is not lost in the wording and is at least half the cover.

Jessica (sureshot26) | 745 comments I think this probably doesn't show enough of the bird, but on the off chance:

Still Midnight (Alex Morrow, #1) by Denise Mina

If that fails, can I use the following for Option 4?

Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver

Or this, for Option 2?

The Temptation of the Night Jasmine (Pink Carnation, #5) by Lauren Willig

message 45: by Bea (new)

Bea Still Midnight (Alex Morrow, #1) by Denise Mina - Actually, Jessica, there is enough bird that I can identify the item as a bird, so I would allow it.

Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver - This would work for Option 4 as the green is the prominant color.

The Temptation of the Night Jasmine - Jasmine is a flowering shrub/vine and so would work for option 2.

All work just fine, Jessica.

Bea Rachel Renee wrote: "Would either of these work for Option 4?The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David MitchellThe Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco"

Rachel Renee, The Name of the Rose would easily work for Option 4.

However, I am not so sure about The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. I see many of the colors I want but the white lettering is the predominant feature of the cover. If I am consistent with my previous decision regarding The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2011, then I have to say no to this book.

So, one yes and one no.
