HeavyReader | 450 comments I read this book prior to 1989. It may have been part of a series of books with unrelated characters. I think the cover was green.

In this book a high school football player is heavily recruited to play on a different team. I'm not sure if the new team is a college team or a different high school team. The young man is excited to be recruited until he discovers he's being recruited by supernatural evil.

I think the football player is kidnapped. I think there is an explosion. (view spoiler)

Needleroozer, are you still looking for this book?

Marlene Perez has a series (and then a spin-off series) where something similar happens, I think. But I don't remember which series it is. It's been a while since I read it, but thought I'd suggest it.

HeavyReader | 450 comments Yes, I am still looking for this book. Thanks for asking.

Thanks for the suggestion, Ann.

I looked at Marlene Perez's page, and her books are much too new to be what I am looking for. It seems that her books were published in this century, and the book I am looking for was published prior to 1989. (I graduated from high school in 1989, and I read the book I am looking for while I was still in high school.)

I want to say it had a green cover, but I am unsure.

HeavyReader | 450 comments This book may have come from a school book order form. I think my school normally used Scholastic for book orders. I've looked at some images of old (from the 80s) book order forms online, but haven't seen the book I am looking for.

Holly (hollylovesbooks) | 759 comments On the Devil's Court is about a high school basketball player who makes a deal with the devil. Probably not what you're looking for but since it was also published in the 80s maybe you'll have some luck by looking at its "similar" books or something?

HeavyReader | 450 comments Thanks for the lead, Holly. I will check out On the Devil's Court.

HeavyReader | 450 comments I poked around with similar books and the lists including On the Devil's Court, but still nothing.

I do appreciate the suggestion. It was a good one.

Holly (hollylovesbooks) | 759 comments By the way, do you mean American football or football/soccer? I found a few American football horror books, but if that isn't what you mean, then they're definitely not it, haha. As it is, it doesn't seem like they match your description, but I figure they're worth a shot.

Creature
The Phantom

HeavyReader | 450 comments Oh, right, American football.

I just looked through the list of Young Adult Series Books Published in the 80s and 90s.
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4...

I didn't find anything there that rang a bell, so I may be wrong about the book I am looking for being a part of a series.

Wyntrnoire | 17 comments Not a YA, but it sounds like John Saul's Creature.

HeavyReader | 450 comments Thanks for the recommendation, but Creature is not the book I am looking for.

The book I am looking for is not about science or genetically modifying boys. It is about a boy who is literally recruited by evil, if not the Devil, one of the Devil's minions.

I'm not sure now if the main character moves to a new town where he is recruited by Evil or if he's simply recruited to go to a new team, either high school or college, but I think high school.

HeavyReader | 450 comments Also, Creature (at over 400 pages) is much longer than the book I am looking for. My book was a slim volume, under 200 pages, I would guess, with not much character development, not many secondary characters. Just a short, quick to read book, meant for 7th, 8th, 9th graders.

HeavyReader | 450 comments Thought I would bump this request in the hopes someone new sees it and knows the book for which I am looking.

HeavyReader | 450 comments Yes! Yes! Yes! Holly, you did it! The book I have been looking for is Play to Live. When I saw the title, I thought that was it. Seeing the cover and reading the brief description sealed the deal. Thank you so very much!

Holly (hollylovesbooks) | 759 comments Awesome! Congrats! Your bumping this topic made me inspired to search for your book again :]

HeavyReader | 450 comments You did a great job with searching. My searching technique yielded nothing. Thank you.
