Shannon (shannonsbooks) The first time I read this book, I hated it. However the second time I loved it. I think it might be my favorite book in the series now. I used to hate the ending, but I like it now because Suzanne Collins lets you decide what happens. c:

An I did not like this one at all. I was confused 3/4s of the way and Ihd no idea what was going on. THat ending was not satisfying. This book really disappointed me. :/

Amber (peoplewererain) | 250 comments I thought it wasn't nearly as good as the other two yes I still loved and yes I still tore through it in a day but it wasn't as good it was almost as if Collins was rushing it desperate to finish the books to the fans and try and please everybody. it's was like without the cover of the hunger games to base her story round it fell apart the deaths of main characters were definitely not mourned over enough either. also I know she chose peeta and all but shouldn't she at least keep in touch with gale he was her only friend to years! but 5 stars for a cheesy somewhat satisfying ending!

Helen completely agree! the end was a let down

Mike (lifeofavictor) | 14 comments I loved the book and, while it wasn't what I expected, was greatly pleased with the outcome. The first time I read it, I was a little disappointed. I reread it right after, paying more attention, and saw that I shouldn't have been. Everyone who says Katniss was out of character here is wrong; the only change to her is, now, her inner emotions, which she has for so long repressed, have surfaced, and she is more emotional. I cried several times upon reading this book. The bombing of the hospital, Peeta choking Katniss, Katniss getting shot in 2, Prim's death, Finnick's death, even Boggs's death all had me in tears. I rarely cry while reading, but Mockingjay was a serious tear-jerker.

Katniss shooting Coin made me smile. It was one of the few moments where she was the Girl on Fire from the first two books. Though she didn't change, her emotional, fragile state brought more character development than badass Katniss to the plate, which, while I enjoyed, had me missing our Girl on Fire. The hospital, the Nut's destruction, and shooting Coin were the moments in the book where she was the Katniss I knew from the first two books, the one who wasn't afraid to take a stand. I also loved that she chose Peeta, even though I'm more of a Gale fan. I loved the way Suzanne wrote it too.

All in all, I loved it, and it was my favorite book out of the three. I hope SC makes a prequel or spin-off so I can continue to live in this incredible, incredible world.

Whoever | 18 comments The book in general was okay. But personally, i dislike it.
after all, i never liked Katniss from the start.
Well, the first book was okay since i didn't know how ridiculous Katniss will become.
I always have sympathy for the secondary characters because almost all the time they never get what they deserve.
I'm okay with Peeta. he's so nice. but i have to say that how he got Katniss's heart is ridiculous.
Peeta didn't do anything wrong, but the fate must hate Gale and also Katniss is stupid and selfish.
Peeta, you are one damm unlucky, lucky person in the Hunger Game World!
Peeta, who could never even talk to Katniss, starts to express his feelings now that he is in HG with Katniss and he is sure that he is going to die. blah blah blah.
That did not make sense.
If you could express it in HG, then you could have expressed in D12.
In Catching Fire, i thought i would see more Gale vs. Peeta, but it's all damn Peeta.
Not really, but actually yes, if you think about how Katniss thinks and acts during the book.
Why is Gale even here?
Can you truly say this is triangle love when Gale hardly appears and hardly do anything with Katniss?
I mean he did got his time sometimes, mostly in Mockingjay, but still it sucks.
The books ruined for me because of Katniss.
Your partner Hunter, best friend, the person who took care of your family, the person who loves you and blah blah
Katniss don't care much about him, Gale.
I understand that Katniss is not in her right mind to think clearly and what notbecause of HG and war, but still how she acts toward Gale is just ridiculous.
Oh, also Katniss blaming Gale who made the bombs, but not sending them. Coin sent them.
and by the way Katniss, Gale is not the only one who made that bombs.
Did she forget the fact that when she was in HG, Gale was the one who took care of her family through out the whole freaking books?
Because i'm sure, if it wasn't for Gale, her family should have died long before Prim was killed by the bombs.
Then later, she asks Gale to kill her.
Why not ask Peeta?
oh, because she thought only Gale could follow her wish to kill her.
i seriously wondered what Katniss thinks Gale is.
Either she thinks Gale is a heartless monster that follows Katniss like she's his mistress or a damn stupid human who is so much in love with her that he will do anything that she asks(demands)
Gale is neither. True that Gale did change during the war, but not like that.
I was so angry about how Gale was treated through out whole damn three books.
I was okay with Katniss at the first book.
I disliked her at the second.
I almost hated her at the third.
truly ridiculous

April | 236 comments @Anna I agree with you. The book had me crying multiple times (and I never cry when reading a book) An author has to be amazing to be able to write a series in such a way that you feel every emotion while reading the series for different characters: happiness, anger, sadness, anxiety, joy, sympathy, hurt, loss, depression (a little). The series had me feeling all of these emotions for different points and for several characters. Suzanne Collins is truly an amazing writer and I'm going to re-read THG trilogy very soon!!! It's prob my #1 fav series. I love it sooo much!!! :)

Jojobean I know that a lot of people didn't like this book but I loved it. I loved how Katniss was the one to bring Peeta back from what was done to him by Snow. And how in the end he brought her back from her depression. I love the conclusion of how one girl changed an entire country for the better. This series was a epic series

Stormy :) (Stormy0218) | 1589 comments This series was great! It was my first dystopian series and also made me realize that I love that genre! However, I just thought Mockingjay was a bit slow. But even so, it is still a great book.

Angelica (alsg) I hate the ending, felt rushed. I hate the ending because....well, it's an ending.

Angela (angieerickson) | 10 comments I loved the series, but I was torn with MockingJay as well.

I found many of the scenes to be too short; we needed more time to focus on the action scenes involving character deaths.

I found some scenes too long; we needed less time on Katniss locked away and more time reading about the trial.

Katniss and Peeta deserved a better Happily Ever After together. Their 'love story' felt more like a 'we settled story'.

Stormy :) (Stormy0218) | 1589 comments I agree. Some of the deaths (e.g: Finnick) I hardly knew what was going on and I had to flip back to see what happened. In the end, it all seemed really rushed, as you said. I really wanted to see how Peeta and Katniss lived, you know?

Angela (angieerickson) | 10 comments I wonder if the author feels the same, looking back. I wonder if she'd consider releasing a short epilogue story.

Stormy :) (Stormy0218) | 1589 comments I would love a short epilogue! That would be great! So many authors are releasing those ebook specials, why not Collins too?

Angela (angieerickson) | 10 comments Stormy wrote: "I would love a short epilogue! That would be great! So many authors are releasing those ebook specials, why not Collins too?"

Should we send her a link to our conversation?

Sarah Younan (sarahsongbird3) i really hope that the directors of the movie pull a "my sisters keeper" on us and just not kill prim off. please god!! its bad enough that katniss went through hell and back, but the fact that they had to kill prim is just wrong. i honestly felt like prims, finnicks, death were unnecessary. not to mention that the plot kind of just went down ward after that...
i remember J.K Rowling saying she once was going to consider killing off Ron. you could only imagine the shit she would get from that.
but yeah, movie. prim. dont kill = good happy fans :)

Stormy :) (Stormy0218) | 1589 comments Well if it weren't for Prims death Katniss may have ended up with Gale...

We totally should!!! Maybe start a petition for her to write an ebook special!

Casey Caracciolo | 6 comments This book was a fitting conclusion to the series. It shows that war is horrible, and everything Katniss tried to do to save her sister was ultimately in vain. Sacrifices have to be made for change and revolution. I think as an American this book really hits me on levels, and I can't help but see the parallels in history. I loved that she ended up with Peeta, and it was a perfect last line to a book. It was great that the whole dynamic was turned on its side from the first two. It had to be. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that the second one started to feel like a typical sequel, but the ending saves it and sets up Mockingjay. I do agree with some of you that Haymitch is underused and that maybe Finnick's death was unneeded. But Prim had to die. Katniss had a weakness and if her enemies didn't exploit it (whomever they were) the book would have felt fake. I loved this trilogy as a writer and a reader.

Stormy :) (Stormy0218) | 1589 comments It was a well written conclusion however I felt kind of unsatisfied by the end.

Casey Caracciolo | 6 comments I guess you're supposed to feel that way.

Crystal Elizabeth | 32 comments I wasn't satisfied with the ending of this book. I don't feel that we were given closure in regards to a lot if characters in the book - and this really annoys me. And top of that Suzanne Collins decided to kill off some of my favourite characters.

Janice | 2 comments aww!! I love this book!!! everything about it is just amazing. I love the story, the characters, the writing style...
I didn't like the third book as much as the other two but it's still an amazing trilogy everyone should read

message 75: by J.S. (new) - rated it 4 stars

J.S. (jsedge) | 28 comments I did enjoy this book but 1 tiny part of it continues to bug me. Can anyone explain katniss' logic in saying 'yes' to another HG with Capitol kids? After all she went through it makes no sense to me that she'd want to put other kids through it. Why? Why Katniss? With that one word, she dropped down in my estimations.

Sophie | 9 comments This book was just really boring because they spent most of their time doing nothing and the end was REALLY confusing.

Loren Secretts | 6 comments Joanne,
I read it awhile ago, but I was under the impression Katniss was tricking them into believing her passion was with them, and in that way she had an easier time (she wasn't under watch) killing off Coin.

I read Mockingjay in one sitting and couldn't put it down, but yes, I too was disappointed. The book became too political for my taste.
(I'm an adult, but I never developed a taste for politics-- one of the reasons I love YA, as it usually doesn't have to deal with that nonsense.)

Grace Knutson | 11 comments If it was me i would have sooo chosen Gale!!!! The Hunger Games was an amazing series as soon as i had finished one i would go out and buy the next! No jock!

Grace Knutson | 11 comments I agree with WHATEVER but Peeta thought he was about to die so who wouldn't tell the girl of his dreams that he loves her? Also the ending was cute but not the way a reader would want the end of a series of books to end! I mean seriously? Kids? Stupid could have written it better myself and that is saying something cause i am not that good!

Thanks:) Yeah, I guess that makes sense. still don't like that bit though!

Christy (craftychristylovesbooks) | 5 comments this book was awesome! how can we expect the characters to stay the same when their lives were turned upside down? peeta was tortured and tampered with; he will never be the same peeta we loved from the first two books. and poor katniss! she was used over and over, saw family and frends die, knowing it was her defiance that set everything in motion, but she sort of made the best of it. honestly i think coin would have been just like snow, mayb not as evil, but she wanted to continue the hunger games, which makes her snow part.2 to me.

someone commented that they decided to continue the hunger games after the war but thats FALSE. they did not continue the games, but built memorials and taught about them in school. remember there were only seven surviving tributes after the war.

all in all, an amazing series! especially since it made me cry.

message 82: by cc (new) - rated it 5 stars

cc (caitlinisakittycat) I agree with everyone saying they liked it better the second time. When I first read the trilogy, I hated Catching Fire & Mockingjay. Then, I read them to my sister & discovered that they actually are really good. I don't know why I disliked them so much the first time, but I definitely loved them the second time.

Stormy :) (Stormy0218) | 1589 comments I just reread Mockingjay and I kind of disliked it more reading it a good year or so since I last reread it. I didn't like Katniss throughout the whole book and feel like many deaths were unnecessary and not very well written. I get that Katniss went through some extreme character development but her character really annoyed me throughout the whole book.

I totally agree with Annabel. I hated it the first time I read it too. It was like she just copied the first book and changed a couple of characters, but overall I fell in love with all three of them. It's a book you need to read more than once

Leigh (leighapostolou) I liked it. I was really glad there wasn't another hunger games. I really don't get why people hate it so much. That say it's too different from the other two but if it was the same Katniss and Peeta would be in the games again and it would be way too repetitive.

Jessica Dixon-Langford | 16 comments I love it! I felt it was dragged on just a bit but I was glad they didn't go into the hunger games again.

Lisa-Anne My only gripe was the Finnick/Annie relationship. I adored their love, and then BOOM... Finnick is gone.

I yelled out "BOO!!" so loudly when I got to that part. It was 11:40pm and thank goodness it was New Years Eve, or I would have woken everyone up at my boyfriend's house.

MysticMemories I didn't like it. To be honest, it seemed like this book was completely different from the first two. It was like a different storyline with the same characters. Sorry but I wasn't a fan.

Tayla Potayta (taylapotayta) | -31 comments I hated the end and I think katniss did as well

Lisa-Anne Tayla wrote: "I hated the end and I think katniss did as well"

It was almost like Collins just wanted to get the writing over with, so she figuratively and literally dropped the bomb.

Lisa-Anne Shelby wrote: "Lots of people at school say it ended too vague and rushed but I feel like after everything Katniss went through, why wouldn't she be less bright eyed and young-souled? I feel like Suzanne didn't r..."

To me it ended so quickly because I felt like there could have easily been 2 more chapters to sum up what happened. I don't know how to explain it. I just wanted a little more about what happens right after... and I really didn't like the epilogue. I could have done without that. But.. being a writer myself, I can see why she would write it. To give the readers hope and a glimpse into the future of Pan Em.

I am curious of looking into the story of Theseus and the Minotaur and see the correlations between the series and the myth. Especially since The Hunger Games series is loosely based off this myth.

Jessica Dixon-Langford | 16 comments The first time I read this book I was addicted to the series I couldn't put the books down, but I felt that some things were a little bit drawn out and some things didn't get enough attention that I think they should have. The ending was amazing but I wish there was a few more chapters to show more insight into what happened after everything. The epilogue needed something more to make it great but I still absolutely loved it.!

Emelia{Get out. I need to go to my mind palace} {geronimo!} | 38 comments I think that the book was really good but a little rushed

Lisa-Anne Jessica wrote: "The first time I read this book I was addicted to the series I couldn't put the books down, but I felt that some things were a little bit drawn out and some things didn't get enough attention that ..."

Exactly! I feel like there could have been more said. Not a lot more, but even a chapter or two to tie everything neatly.

Careese | 24 comments I felt like the entire series was very well written, I will agree with some that there were some portions of the last book that felt a bit rushed. Especially some of the action scenes, I had to read some of them over. There were definitely some unwarranted deaths, FINNICK!!! Seriously he did not need to die or Prim for that matter, I was so upset about those. As for the epilogue I thought it was well enough, I don'think there is a really pleasant way to end a story with that much strife in it. In all I thought it was a great series.- Catching Fire is totally my favourite of the three though. :D

My love for Finnick came quickly. He reminds me of my boyfriend SO much it's kind of crazy (except he has brown hair and brown eyes, and definitely didn't have a forced to have sex with people kind of history).

I was so angry when he died that it took every power of my being to not throw the book across the room.

Maggie (ravenglass) | 3 comments This was a good book. I did get frustrated with Collins, hahaha, the series did not end the way I would have liked. But this was a creative, intruging, and exciting book.

Lisa-Anne NOW my curiosity will be what will happen to Plutarch Heavensbee? How will they explain the change in his looks between Part 1 and Part 2? Or even during part 1?!

message 99: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (ravenglass) | 3 comments loved how this book ended! kinda. loved what katniss did in regard of killing whom, but not the fact of how her relationships ended. or what happened to prim. that made me frustrated. but the book was great
