Yay! I've been waiting for you to give Terry Pratchett one more try. :)

message 102: by [deleted user] (new)

Starts really well... I hope it doesn't get too silly as it goes on.

message 103: by [deleted user] (new)

Pratchett is funny, smart, and veers quite rapidly to the absurd sometimes. I picked this one because it doesn't, imo. Pratchett is also one of those authors where the more you read, the more in-jokes there are, and it makes the later volumes so much fun. Many of my favorites are later in the series(s).

Sera How is A Suitable Boy coming along?

message 105: by [deleted user] (new)

Sloooowly.... *sigh* But I am determined to finish it, Sera!

message 106: by Sera (new)

Sera I'm rooting for you!

message 107: by [deleted user] (new)

Now where did Hayes post that picture of a dumpster......

message 109: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh yes! I'm a little past the halfway point, but will stop a bit and wait for you. Gives me an opportunity to read a few other things.

message 110: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Hayes, I need an excuse to read Hunger Games. I see it is on your list, maybe we can do a buddy read and get some others to join in.

message 111: by [deleted user] (last edited May 05, 2012 11:49PM) (new)

I said I would read it for another challenge, but I am resisting. On the other hand several people I know have said--unexpectedly--that they enjoyed it. So I am glad to have a buddy to push me along.

I don't know when I will get to it. Do you have a time frame?

Sounds perfect, I am starting it today.

I have another buddy read and some reads for my niece's book club after my current buddy read. June is Tale of Two Cities, and then open until Vanity Fair in November. So there's a lot of time in there for Hunger Games.

I would be reading it for the same reasons as you because of the unexpected response of others. Let me know what your reading schedule is like. If it is okay with you I will ask on the TBR buddy read thread if anyone else would like to join us.

message 114: by [deleted user] (last edited May 06, 2012 11:12PM) (new)

Absolutely! The more the merrier. Just say when.

message 115: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Okay, I will post it tonight and see if there are any takers.

Jeannette wrote: "Yay! I've been waiting for you to give Terry Pratchett one more try. :)"

No, I guess Pratchett is not for me. Thanks anyway for getting me to try again. Next!

What is the word on the DNFs? Do they count for the challenge?

message 117: by [deleted user] (new)

So, you bailed on Monstrous Regiment? Too bad. :( You can go back to the boy now.

message 118: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, I'm afraid I did. And I've got the Boy on hold for a bit. I'll be reading Anne of Green Gables with Margaret to cleanse the reading palate!

message 119: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 173 comments Too bad we can't "like" a post, Hayes. :)

message 120: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Anne to cleanse the palate is a very good choice. Enjoy!

Wanted to ask if there was anyway to arrange the cover photos, in our challenge tracking post, horizontally instead of them coming up vertically? Thought you would be the one to ask.

message 121: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar | 358 comments Mine were horizontal but just recently they went vertical!! Would love to know how to make them go back horizontal preferably without having to do them all again! Sigh...

message 122: by [deleted user] (last edited May 13, 2012 12:30AM) (new)

I have the same problem, Jemidar. In the past if you left a space between the covers they went vertical, but if you had them right next to each other they went horizontal. Now just vertical. Might be another GR glitch while they work everything out.

Thank you, Margaret!

message 123: by [deleted user] (last edited May 30, 2012 12:45PM) (new)

without space:

Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables, #1) by L.M. Montgomery Lamb The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore

with space:

Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables, #1) by L.M. Montgomery Lamb The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore

nope.... and now there is that minute black line at the bottom right corner of the book... hmmm...

ETA: seems they have worked something out.

message 124: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) There's been at least one thread about this in Goodreads Feedback. It's a bug.

message 125: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar | 358 comments Hope they work it out soon then!

message 126: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments I'm not glad it's a bug but glad to know I wasn't doing it wrong and that I wasn't crazy. I didn't want to say that I thought I had them horizontal before but now they are vertical, ha-ha. Thanks for checking into it everyone! I didn't think a formatting thing could be a site wide bug. It sounds like GR is aware of it then and will have it ironed out soon.

message 127: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm almost finished with Anne of Green Gables... I will make a push to do that today. I hate reading so slowly; I forget what happened at the beginning of the story!

message 128: by [deleted user] (new)

Anne is best read in big chunks. I love getting into her world.

message 129: by [deleted user] (last edited May 23, 2012 06:48AM) (new)

I cried like an idiot over the last three or four chapters... such a nice story.

ETA: posted my review

message 130: by [deleted user] (new)

I was gonna say: You have to read the ending in one swoop. I cry every time, too.

message 131: by Sera (new)

Sera I haven't read Anne in about 30 years. A couple of years ago, I book the first three books in a one set volume. I will have to check it out - probably next year. My TBR list for this year is almost full! Plus, it is almost June - where did this year go?

message 132: by [deleted user] (new)

I was just thinking the same thing, Sera! *June*

We listened to Anne on audio a couple of years ago, and we watched the TV series around the same time. Time for a re-watch, at the very least.

message 133: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished Northern Lights (which is the Nora Roberts book, not the Philip Pullman story, which by sheer coincidence I am starting now)

Will post a review when I am back in civilization.

message 134: by [deleted user] (new)

Posted my review... top of this page.

We're back.

message 135: by Christine (new)

Christine (chrisarrow) Read Seabiscuit! Read it, read it. Go Seabiscuit! *Though War Admiral had better offspring*

message 136: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll get to it before too long. Can't wait. Wasn't War Admiral Secretariat's daddy?

message 137: by Christine (new)

Christine (chrisarrow) Nope. Bold Ruler x Somethingroyal. I think Sec. is related but cousins or something. Man O'War isn't in his bloodline.

Funny story for the day. My vet owns a few race horses (my vet is great and rich). He brought a horse from Bobby Flay. Horse is grand-colt of Secretariat, and can't run. My vet paid under 13 thousand. Flay bought the horse for a millon.

message 138: by [deleted user] (new)

Those guys earn too much money, imho! lol

message 139: by Christine (new)

Christine (chrisarrow) Perhaps. But my vet is great. When my cat, the one who died in 2010, got diabetes, it was a really difficult case to treat. It took forever to find the right insulin as well as the right dosage. My vet did many of those tests free of charge.

message 140: by [deleted user] (new)

I guess I was thinking more of Bobby Flay -- he earns way to much, I'm sure!

I'm glad you found a vet who is good at what he does, and is a good person on top of it.

Slipped in a "micro read" (to make up for "The Boy")

#20 Tintin au Congo by Hergé

and noticed they have fixed the "cover bug", see message #124.

message 142: by [deleted user] (new)

Tintin -- in what language?

message 143: by [deleted user] (new)

French!

message 144: by [deleted user] (new)

Of course! :D

message 145: by [deleted user] (new)

Is she back?

message 146: by [deleted user] (new)

2-1/2 hours to go. She's in Detroit and they will board soon, if they aren't already. We leave in about 1-1/4 hours to head to the airport. I sure do miss her!

message 147: by [deleted user] (new)

How exciting though! I remember when I came back from my first trip overseas and my mom met me at the airport... it was a great moment.

message 148: by [deleted user] (new)

I might be driving her crazy..... But I know she's happy at the thought of seeing me again!
