Obviously, Edward is a creepy stalker. Newsflash - REAL boys are terrifying! In real life, girls don't always know who's going to be obsessively jealous, who's going to be mentally or physically abusive, who's going to be a date rapist, etc. A real boy can text while driving with you as his passenger and kill you that way. (Not to pick on boys - some girls are abusive too.) Dating is like sex - the only way to be completely safe about it is not to do it at all!But don't we pretty much all have this experience on some level - we have fears and anxieties when we're really young and we start dating. We have to learn how to negotiate relationships. We have disasters. Sometimes we get hurt. Twilight shows a very exaggerated, fantasy version of that, but the core of the problem is real - relationships are scary!
But sometimes they work out.
Stephenie Meyer didn't invent the stalker boyfriend, though. Romeo went to Juliet's house and stalked her - and they both wound up dead.
As I read all of you guys' posts, I realized you think it's mostly about love. Well, couldn't it be that he is still confused about not being able to read her mind? That he keeps trying and trying, and maybe hoping that he can read her mind while she is sleeping, because she sleep talks and dreams. This will most likely sound weird, but maybe it's like her brain is a cellphone. She has a different amount of bars for wherever she is, what she is doing, and/or what she is thinking about. Like reception. And maybe Edward just wants to follow her everywhere in case he ends up in a place where she has 5 bars. I don't know. It was just a thought.

And I think that was part of it, too. But I don't think he was going to suddenly be able to "get reception". He just had to learn about her mind other ways - the normal ways. By what she said or did.

Well some people actually believe they are vampires and bite other peoples necks and stuff. So you never know some girl could be falling for a guy who thinks he is a vampire...but that would be wierd.

Okay here's what I think. Edward is definitely a stalker. However with the given conditions and the good he did(stopping her from being raped), it's not exactly a bad thing. Though that doesn't justify the right for him to break into Bella's room every night and wathch her.

Edward and Bella love each other for what Bella smells like to Edward. At least with Jella, the chemistry is more natural. Jacob sees how much of a dork she is but he still loves her.

Well it is sort of like that in the start but it's not further in the series. Especially after New Moon, Edward said that her blood didn't really affect him like that anymore.
Edward chuckles way to much and raises his eyebrows to much. And I agree with eveyone who says hes a stalker. But that doesn't mean I don't like him. I LOVE Edward!

I really like the points and comments you made. People do try to classify Edward in human terms. He's not. He's also a product of his time, when women were put on pedestals to be protected and provided for by men in all areas of life. So it would translate over to his vampire life to a more extreme extent I would imagine.
Another thing about this book is that it is fiction, paranormal fantasy. It should not be used as an example for reality, although fiction mimics elements of reality. Young girls, adult women etc. should be able to differentiate between the two. There are people who have NEVER read Twilight and they still make bad relationship choices. Choosing a partner comes from what you see and are taught at home first, and how you react to it. So no book is solely responsible for the impressions of young girls when it comes to choosing a partner. Besides, Edward is supposed be flawed. *shrug*
Secondly, I'm a bit embarassed I liked this book enough to even discuss it. It's not very well written or edited, and frankly it was overrated but a good product to market and make millions. But it has some good characterization and ideas in it. Great lines, too. But everyone should have a 'guilty pleasure' in reading otherwise things would get dull.
Vampires are hunters.. stalking is in their nature.
