Ruth | 15 comments Jesse Eisenberg (Oscar nominated actor from Social Network) narrates the 3 books in Holly Blacks The Curse Workers series. This includes: White Cat, Red Glove and Black Heart. His narration is spot on for the first person character Cassel Sharpe. White Cat (Curse Workers, #1) by Holly Black Red Glove (Curse Workers #2) by Holly Black Black Heart (Curse Workers, #3) by Holly Black

message 52: by Jennings (new)

Jennings Wright | 1 comments Loreli King does the Stephanie Plum books from the 8th one on, and she's great. (Oops, just saw someone else posted that!) The narrator who does the first Plum book sounds like a grandmother who smokes two packs a day - not good!

Eric Idle (from Monty Python) narrates "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and it's wonderful.

Jack Lemon did "Huckleberry Finn", also wonderful.

And I LOVE Tony Britton, who narrated almost all of Dick Francis' books.

Lisa Tsuruda | 16 comments Aloha from Hawaii!!! For me no one is better than JIM DALE period. I first heard him on the phenomenal 'The Night Circus' by Erin Morgenstern (everyone HAS to read or listen or both this book!)!!!! I then started looking for all of his audiobooks!! The entire Harry Potter series and the Peter and the Starcatchers series. Then I will listen to another series he did!!! I wrote about him on my blog at http://auntylisatsuruda.wordpress.com/

cEe beE (dumdeedum) | 7 comments My favorite readers are:
Carol Bilger - The Red Tent
Simon Prebble - Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

Their narration made the stories even more wonderful and magical.

Try Lenny Henry reading Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys. As much as I like Neil Gaiman reading his own work, this is a fantastic narration.

message 56: by Heather Lynn (new)

Heather Lynn Pittman | 1 comments I loved Anna Fields/Kate Fleming in her reading of Susan Elizabeth Phillips' books. Sadly, she is no longer with us as she was was killed some years ago in a flood. That being said, if I'm looking for a book to listen to for a second time, I almost always choose on that she's read. She's phenomenal.

message 57: by Rachel (last edited Aug 08, 2012 01:39AM) (new)

Rachel Saul Reichlin narrated the "Dragon Tattoo" trilogy perfectly in my opinion. I even emailed him via his website afterwards to tell him so, and I got a lovely reply back!

John Slattery (Roger Sterling from Mad Men) narrated Stephen King's "Duma Key" wonderfully.

I also liked William Roberts narrating a number of Bill Bryson books.

I love Lorelei King in Charley Davidson too, I didn't listen to her in Mercy Thompson series but I will one day.

Bahni Turpin does a good job in Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #1) by Stacia Kane Unholy Magic (Downside Ghosts, #2) by Stacia Kane City of Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #3) by Stacia Kane Sacrificial Magic (Downside Ghosts, #4) by Stacia Kane

Good to know that the Shade series is good, I already downloaded 2 books. I added the Elemental series.
Loved Phil Gigante in Fever series.

Darlene (darnis) | 8 comments I love to listen to Lisette Lecat of The #1 Ladies Detective Agency series; also, Frank Muller, John Macdonald, & Michael Beck.

David Rubenstein (davidrubenstein) | 8 comments If you like books by Dave Barry, then the fantastically sarcastic voice of Dick Hill is the one to listen to.

message 69: by Brodiew (last edited Aug 20, 2012 12:52PM) (new)

Brodiew Have you ever experienced a moment in listening to a favorite narrator when you think they have transcended your standard listening experience with them? It could be a single paragraph or an entire scene.

I recently had this experience with Scott Brick (Narrator)when listening to Clive Cussler's The Thief. Brick's standard delivery rose to the next level when he conveyed the death a minor supporting character. Though the character was minor, it was an crucial plot point. I felt that's Brick normally somber narration took on extra empathy in this scene and it actually made a lump form in my throat. Given that Cussler's work is action adventure oriented, I was pleasantly surprised by this emotionally charged scene.

message 70: by Ions (new)

Ions | 5 comments although it's not all too common, I really like listening to the author narrate their books. Roger Zelazny read most of his Amber series, as well as A Night in the Lonesome October. I really like his voice, it helps bring the dry wit of his characters out.

Neil Gaiman has read some of his books, and he does a fantastic job as well

message 71: by Brittany B. (new)

Brittany B. (benoibe) | 10 comments I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and I have come to love many authors.

Bianca Amato is easily my favorite female narrator. I noticed her first as the voice of Charlotte Brontë in The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Brontë by Syrie James

To name a few of her books:
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger The Husband Trap (The Trap Trilogy, #1) by Tracy Anne Warren Innocent Traitor A Novel of Lady Jane Grey by Alison Weir

She also reads many of Philippa Gregory's books.
The Kingmaker's Daughter (The Cousins' War #4) by Philippa Gregory The White Queen (The Cousins' War, #1) by Philippa Gregory The Red Queen (The Cousins' War, #2) by Philippa Gregory The Queen's Fool (Tudors, #4) by Philippa Gregory The Boleyn Inheritance (Tudors, #3) by Philippa Gregory

I'm currently listening to The Women of the Cousins' War The Duchess, the Queen, and the King's Mother by Philippa Gregory ,which she narrates beautifully. In fact, her narration is what persuaded me to buy this. (Very good book so far)

message 72: by Mike (last edited Nov 28, 2012 12:26PM) (new)

Mike (nhcitykid) | 6 comments Emily Gray, got me hooked on audio books. She is the narrator for most of Jasper Fforde's Tuesday Next series. She is perfect for the voice of that series.
I find that the narrator of an audio book is almost as important as the content of the book. Some narrators ruin a book for me, and conversely some narrators make a mediocre book good.

I read the Simon Vance narrated "Dragon Tattoo" Trilogy, which was excellent (though I sent a friend request to him through Goodreads with a note, and he hasn't responded).

And I just picked up "Duma Key" from the library to see how Mr. Slattery fares.

message 76: by Leonardo (new)

Leonardo Noto (leonardonoto) | 6 comments Anyone without a British accent--I listen to audiobooks in my car and British accents make me sleepy!

Ellen (more books, please) (ellenlovestoread) | 10 comments Tavia Gilbert and Emily Gray are new-to-me narrators/performers that have zoomed to my <3 <3 <3 category.

Lorelei King will probably always be my favorite.

I generally do not like it when the authors read their books. I do enjoy Sedaris, but Ephron (whose work I adore, RIP) not so much. I generally listen to samples and stay away.

I also need to start listening to more male narrators/performers. I was thinking I would start with Butcher's Dresden series. But then I "hear" good things about Xe Sands, too. Decision for another Audible sale!

Joanne (joannekled) | 13 comments I love ARTHUR MOREY!

message 79: by David (new)

David Rubenstein (davidrubenstein) | 8 comments I recently listened to Three Hearts and Three Lions by Poul Anderson. The book is read by Bronson Pinchot, who does a truly marvelous job. Here is my review.

message 80: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Simon Vance narrated The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and was incredible. I credit my loving the first two books in the Millennium Trilogy to his voice.

message 81: by Pat (last edited Feb 01, 2013 09:08AM) (new)

Pat (crabpatty) | 35 comments Rene Auberjonois, who has been around since...forever. (Sorry, Rene) "Still Life With Crows" by Lincoln Childs & Douglas Preston is simply amazing. The inflections, the voices, geez, I have goosebumps just remembering the saga!He also has done "Cabinet of Curiosities" also,by Preston & Childs.

Barbara Rosenblatt.Cassandra Campbell. How wonderfully versatile these two are!The credits to their names are many and well earned!I can't begin to mention them all, but I look for these two in particular because I like the way they pull you in with their voices.

C.J. Critt, when she did the first 7 Stephanie Plums, I was hooked. When they switched to Loreli King, I was thrown off because you sort of get used to a certain voice. I am originally from Pennsylvania, so the NJ accents that Critt used sounded more realistically NJ for me. Especially Grandma Mazur, with her gravelly old voice.

Fannie Flagg. Dare I precede that name with"good old"? When she does her books they are just plain nice. I wish she would do more of them. In fact,Fannie, read all of them for me!

Lindsay Ellison, Maine accent is very pleasant in the Home Repair is Homicide series.

You know, I think I just must enjoy being read to.

I love this series. I have not listened to Black Heart yet.

message 83: by [deleted user] (new)

My favorite narrators are: Holter Graham in anything (I just love his voice), Johanna Parker as Sookie Stackhouse and Barbara Rosenblatt at Temperance Brennan.

message 84: by David (new)

David Rubenstein (davidrubenstein) | 8 comments I just finished reading A Scanner Darkly by Philip Dick. It was brilliantly read by Paul Giamatti. He made each character's voice so distinct, and brought such pathos to the voices of the weaker characters. Here is my review.

message 85: by Pat (new)

Pat (crabpatty) | 35 comments I have just finished the audio book of Beach Music by Pat Conroy, and performed by Frank Muller.

I loved the book. Frank Muller did so many different accents through the presentation. I don't want to be a spoiler, but the accents were from many different places.

The book has 800 pages. 25 disks. I did not think I would make it through 25 and dreaded it but my friend Terri said it was very good. So I trudged forward. Believe me when I say that it was well worth it. Beach Music by Pat Conroy

message 87: by Pat (new)

Pat (crabpatty) | 35 comments Oh yes, that was a good story to listen to, also! Great accents.

message 88: by Linda (new)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 108 comments I am currently listening to The Passage and Scott Brick is the narrator and I must say that he is quickly becoming my go to narrator - I just love his voice....

message 89: by Dora (new)

Dora (dora95) I love Juliet Stevenson's, Emilia Fox's and Anna Bentinck's narrations of Austen - and Bronte novels, Karen Cass's reading of Villette by Charlotte Bronte, Clare Wille's readings of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels, Jan Hartley's performance of Charlotte Bronte's poems, Rachel Bavidge'sperformance of poems by Christina Rossetti, Martin Jarvis, Simon Vance, David Timson, Gerald Dickens and Sean Barrett reading Dickens, and I'm afraid I cannot mention all of them. There are many narrators I love!

message 90: by Dora (new)

Dora (dora95) Let me mention two more. I love Teresa Gallagher's voice. (She is the female narrator in the Naxos version of Bleak house.) Alex Jennings's reading of Nicholas Nickleby is brilliant, too.

message 92: by Howard (new)

Howard G | 3 comments Jim Dale and James Marsters!

message 93: by Dora (new)

Dora (dora95) Just wondering what you think of David Case's narration?

message 94: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I mentioned earlier I liked how Patrick Fraley did Huckleberry Finn. I just stumbled on Spoon River Anthology at my library, and I'm excited to listen because Fraley's name is on it!

message 95: by Pat (new)

Pat (crabpatty) | 35 comments Hi Joy-I would wonder why also. Because, I sometimes choose an Audiobook because of the Reader/Narrator. Maybe she has an email address that you could ask her. I often ponder those questions to the ridiculous point. But that is just me.

message 96: by Robin P (new)

Robin P Tim Gerard Reynolds made me fall in love with a trilogy by Michael J Sullivan that starts with Theft of Swords. There is a lot of humor in it for a fantasy series, and he does that extremely well. He's a narrator I never had heard of before.

Wil Wheaton narrates a group of humorous sci-fi books by John Scalzi. I went to a book reading by Scalzi and I was worried that I wouldn't enjoy it because I would be expecting Wheaton. It turns out Scalzi sounds almost exactly like Wheaton, or the other way around.
That's why he chose him to narrate.

Julie Dretzin does a great job with girls and young women. She did one I had years back on cassette called The Center of Everything by Laura Moriarty, the story of a girl coming of age in some difficult situations. She could make the word "Oh" have so much meaning!

message 97: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 1 comments Ed Westwick narrated Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare. He could read me the phone book and I would listen. I adore his voice.

Daniel Sharman read the 3rd book in the series Clockwork Princess and also did a wonderful job. Too bad both of these readers don't have many other books (at least not on audible).

message 98: by Kristin (new)

Kristin Conner (isiscloud) | 7 comments Roy Dotrice starts a little rough with Game of Thrones and has a couple hiccups on Arya's (or was it Sansa's) voice, but was otherwise terrific.
Yeah, it took a little while to get used to his voice after listening to Davina Porter, narrating Prime Suspect, but now he's excellent. Female voices are difficult for men, especially feminine, but there aren't too many Sansa sections.

A friend who's husband is a narrator, told me that there was a different reader for later Game of Thrones' books, but there was such a revolt that he had to redo them!

I don't like Jim Dale as a narrator for Harry Potter. Again, he makes Hermione too prissy. I would love to hear Stephen Frey, but I don't think you can get his version in the US.

CJ Critt is awesome for chick-lit. I also like Renee Raudman, who reads the Bailey Weggins series by Kate White.

What I don't like are overly dramatized versions, sometimes British narrators have this problem. As well as productions are too rangey (volume-wise) like too soft for certain characters and then too loud for others and I have to keep adjusting the volume.

I was so disappointed when I took out the audiobook of Where the Sidewalk Ends and Shel Silverstein (author) read. Just not what I expected and ruined the experience.
