Brenda | 123 comments Just went through ALL my kindle/ebook titles which are on my kindle, and even though none showed up on my rescue list, a small percentage of them still had to be rescued.

So just letting everyone know that just because they might not show on your 'rescue' list, they could still be in danger.

Betsy | 605 comments Recheck your rescue list periodically. I had everything cleared yesterday. Today I checked it again and it was clear. Then I just checked it again a little while ago and one of my short Kindle books needed to be rescued.

I don't know why it showed up now when it hadn't before, but I'm glad I rechecked.

message 54: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments I think the kindle books are trickling in. I found 2 a while back and friends have mentioned them coming in occasionally. I'll be checking every couple hours this evening and tomorrow, until it's too late.

Brenda | 123 comments My rescue list is now showing 4 books as kindle, all of which I own paper copies..I'm not sure why this has happened, as there is no other edition showing with the kindle one, then my hardcover one is also showing no other edition. I'm guessing they need to be merged (I'm sorry I don't know how to do that)..

That's just one example.

Can someone please help with this...thanks.

Sandra (readingontheporch) | 269 comments I now have 4 Kindle editions in my rescue list for which no other editions appear to exist on GR. How do you rescue those? I don't have the actual books yet, they're on my TBR, and I haven't obtained a copy yet because they only existed as Kindles which aren't compatible with my ereader.

message 58: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 897 comments i've been googling them to see if the author has a website etc...or any non-commercial place that might have the info needed

I have a couple of the ones on your list. I'll take care of those as soon as I pull them up on my Kindle. I might have one more but I'm not sure. (I hoard Kindle books like candy.)

message 60: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (readingontheporch) | 269 comments Thank you. I don't know how else we can rescue them. Two of the authors don't even exist in Worldcat, it seems. I figured if there was another edition of sorts I could add it to GR and then combine it with the Kindle version, but there's not even that. :(

It sounds like you might have just shelved the wrong edition. If you want, you can switch your review to the paperback edition from the choose editions page. It won't rescue the Kindle edition, but it will take it off your rescue list.

Do authors list the ASINs or ISBNs on their sites? What I've seen seems to only link back to Amazon, if there are links at all.

Patrick, I've found several kindle editions of books needing to be rescued on my shelves and I KNOW I shelved the paperback or hardcover editions. I think some of this is due to well meaning librarians messing up the database with deleting certain editions so they went to kindle.

I checked all 4 books. Neither showed any other edition but the Kindle.

ETA: Oops, you replied to Brenda. So - what do I do if there aren't any editions but those Kindles?

Why did they just appear now though...I'm positive I didn't shelve the wrong edition, but can we just combine them? Thanks for your reply so quickly!

Patrick - would a sample of a Kindle book suffice as "book in hand" as long as the sample contains the title/author info needed to rescue the book?

I actually got a few books where I accidentally shelved the kindle edition, so I am removing those and replacing them with "real" books. I guess I should be trying to save the kindle editions, but it's a bit late at night to do that and I have rescued enough books for one day.

message 69: by Patrick (new)

Patrick Brown | 101 comments Hmm. Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on with those then.

As for Kindle Samples, if it has the same ASIN as the full edition, then it counts.

message 71: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Sullivan | 8 comments As a retired 'real' librarian, I was once tasked with running a midsized library largely with volunteers. Don't get me wrong, but a volunteer is, well, a volunteer. Here today, gone tomorrow...on vacation, etc. Training is problematic. The most vital level of mid-management is entirely missing.

Hopefully your paid personnel are better organized than my poor (no pun, truth) library was.

This task you've assumed is beyond gigantic, cobbling together a multitude of sources (any one of which might step away from their duties, evaporate into the mists) to form one new source that is comparable to amazon.

My question: when you are done, will you offer your product in the way amazon once seemed to do, freely and without conditions? Or will you want recompense for your efforts--as amazon is now doing? Will you grow jealous of your labors and attempt to keep others from stealing them away...through onerous restrictions and demands?

Or, will you devolve into Wikipedia, abused and over used and rarely paid at all?

Shall we have a meeting on this, dear volunteers, authors and publishers all?

Definitely!! Just rescue books with whatever info you have. Details can be added after today.

message 76: by Reina (new)

Reina Williams Thanks, everyone! I have rescued several books now, and posted to 2 chapters of Romance Writers of America I belong to in hopes authors not on GR would be alerted. But 2 people emailed me with confusion about their titles and I notice their books have multiple editions, the Kindle ones without covers--but the titles appear rescued...my question is will the editions with no cover image, etc. be deleted or does someone need to combine them with the other ebook edition? Thanks!

message 77: by Cait (new)

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments Reina, if the titles are rescued then they will not be deleted, even if they lose their cover image or are not combined with the other editions. Any author can post in a new thread here with a link to an image of the cover to be re-uploaded, or with any other data which needs to be updated on their books, or with links to editions which should be combined. There are also imports of cover art and other data from major publishers and distributors which will be going on this week for books which were rescued but partially stripped, so some of the covers may be restored automatically. Again, as long as the books are rescued, the rest of the edition data can be updated at any time -- the Monday deadline does not apply to anything except the basic rescue.

message 78: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 29, 2012 06:55PM) (new)

Reina - as long as title and author info is in place (and not Amazon-sourced) the book will be safe. GR is importing covers from Ingram over the next few days, and no books will be deleted due to missing non-essential info.

Edit to add: Cait posted her much more thorough explanation while I was typing. :-)

message 79: by Reina (new)

Reina Williams Thanks, Cait and Christa! Sounds like waiting a few days would be best before doing any combining, etc. :)

Stacey (staceyh) | 4 comments OK, so why would a Kindle book that appears to have been rescued, have the summary appearing in Spanish, even though the edition language says English? A librarian changed the default description to Spanish, so it applies across all editions. Not good policy...

Probably accidental. But yeah, Spanish should not be the default language on a book originally and primarily published in English.

Jan (janoda) | 140 comments Allright. I've noticed that a couple of Kindle editions don't appear to be in need of rescue, but when I look at the librarian log, I can see that they should be in need of rescuing.

Since the data by amazon is correct, whatever I edit won't count as rescuing. What do I do?

message 86: by Bex (new)

Bex (kiltedtwizzles) | 23 comments I just realised I used an author's website relating to the paperback version to rescue a couple kindle versions. Is this going to have a knock back affect at all? I wasn't paying proper attention and only realised after I'd done two that the only place their ASIN was showing was the linked Amazon page.(This is one).
From what I could tell all the data is the same on the kindle version as on the paperback so I've not technically used incorrect data & it didn't come from amazon.

I have a couple friends with at-risk to be deleted kindle editions but I couldn't find any alternate sources for most & some which have only link to amazon, they don't mention the asin on their page at all so I'm a bit stuck with what to use for those too. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I received one of these helpful emails about a book from CreateSpace needing to be rescued. The book was supposedly already rescued but the title & author were not added. Since I have that information, who do I give it to to make the update as it wouldn't allow me to edit the entry? (Unknown Book 12015860 Unknown Author 861 should be The Quest for Caldaria: Book 2 in the Caldaria Trilogy (Volume 2) by Julia Faye)

Any assistance would be great! I'm not even sure if this is the proper place to bring this up. If it's not, please direct me in the right direction. Thanks!!

Because the rescue form was deactivated when the Amazon info was removed. The language currently there is confusing, though. I believe it will change with an upcoming release.

No, the book hasn't been rescued, so we'll still need new data for it. But at the moment, the feedback loop for these is broken. It shouldn't say that it's been rescued at all.

What should we do about the Public Domain books from Amazon? There is no Author site or Publisher site because the author has been long dead and the books were "published" by Amazon as public domain/"Classic" books. I'd also like to know what to do about the covers since the cover art was just a generic Amazon cover.

Please & Thank you.

message 100: by [deleted user] (new)

Title / author / publisher data can usually be gotten by downloading the free sample.

If the book is free, you can download the whole thing to Kindle for PC/Mac & screencap the cover. Also, sometimes those generic-looking book covers were at Gutenberg before they were being used on Amazon.
