I think if I say one more time I want to read a Baldacci once when my boyfriend is around...he might buy me one just to have me read one. I keep seeing his name on books and want to try one...but I keep taking other books.

Laura (apenandzen) He would like Baldacci too. I worked for a guy once who I had a mini-crush on. He recommended Baldacci highly - Total Control actually - and he wasn't kidding. Early on, I really liked his stuff. More lately, he's been writing books I wouldn't even pick up. But who knows they may be good.

Lindsey (mamamunky) I completed 10 pt task #10- Read A Book With A Title Containing The Name Of A Body Part (Eg. Hand, Nail, Finger, Toe, Etc).

The Family Bones - Kimberly Raiser

I vaguely recall reading on here that bones were going to be considered a body part. If not, then disregard.

message 1509: by Jon (last edited Jan 25, 2009 03:48PM) (new)

Jon Liz I actually really enjoyed Santa Evita and was a good alternative to having to read a christmas book that still fit the question. Its more or less a true story and has a touch of that South American magic realism. The lines between non-fiction and fiction are blurred a lot of the time as the author writes alot about who he interviewed and facts surrounding the cult of Evita after she was dead and the strange journey of her embalmed body - you want to beleive it all, every last detail but have to remind yourself its a novel so i suppose you never really know which bits are true - are the interviews fiction too or are the only fictitious bits - those written in first person that know one could know, just to make it a better read. Leaves you guessing a bit. But its certainly based on a large ammount of fact. I played the Evita soundtrack in the background to add effect lol. She was certainly a fascinating woman. 4 stars from me! I also found some interesting you tube posts about her and the embalmed body that found itself mysteriously moving round the world to keep the interest levels going.

SusannaW (susannauk) | 51 comments Well, that's my first 5 points notched up - Harlan Coben's Hold Tight. (416 pages.)

Did I enjoy it? - not really. The central plot mystery was a good one, but the subplots were a bit contrived, and I was disappointed with his writing style... Kind of regret choosing this one as my first Coben, as so many people seem to rate him. Still, it's 5 points.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I finished Can You Trust a Tomato in January? by Vince Staten. It was HIGHLY amusing. That puts me at 145 pts.

I'm now reading Miracle on 34th Street by Valentine Davis, illustrated by Tomie dePaola. I don't think I've ever even seen the movie. It's cute so far. Kris Kringle totally swore... which I found HILARIOUS.

I'm also listening to 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke, who died last year. I've also never seen this movie, so I don't know what it's about. I expect that at SOME point it will start talking about SPACE. For the first 6 chapters, it's been "ape-men" this and "ape-men" that. It's been pretty boring and frustrating so far... I don't personally believe that we're all descended from apes... and to have him go on and on and on about it for so long.... It's as bad as this rambling review of mine! Hopefully it will get better soon...

(I think it's going to frustrate me a lot, and that I'll need to take breaks for my own sanity...) But if I can just re-read Breaking Dawn... *psshhh* No sweat. I've been meaning to read it again anyway.

Melissa (melissaconrad) I finished The Age of Innocence this weekend, but now I've watched the movie! Thus completing:

9. The Oscar's are coming: Read a Book or Play Whose Movie Counterpart Was Nominated or That Won in the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay Category and Watch the Film.

(It was nominated in 1993, but lost to Schindler's List. Must be hard to compete with Schindler's List!)

The Age of Innocence is by Edith Wharton.

So the 15 brings me to...35! Making my way up.

Laura (apenandzen) I read Age of Innocence in December, but haven't watched the film yet. I really didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the House of Mirth. I just found it kind of unbelievable that he would have a crush to the point of obsession on this woman he had barely known.

Still listening to 2001: A Space Odyssey ... Slowly but surely. I'm thinking the movie HAS to be better than the book... There's so much description... In movie format, they could chop all that out. (Although, in the forward, the author said that the novel was created for the movie--to make writing the script easier, so he probably did that on purpose... But still. Tedious.)

Next.... hmmmm... Either Sugar Daddy by Lisa Kleypas (plus eating a sugar daddy...) or Bride and the Beast by Teresa Medeiros (takes place in Scotland (Sara)). It will depend on my mood after work...

Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments I just finished Strong Spirits (can't remember the author right now). It's listed as a romance at the library, so I am counting it for that task, but I would not have categorized it as such. If I wasn't reading it for the challenge, I probably would have quit part way through--or just skipped to the end to find out the mystery. I'm bummed because I've now read two books that I really did not like. So now I'm onto Nevada Barr's Winter Study--she usually is a great read for me--I hope so this time.

Jon Jeane - is 'Im not scared' a mystery perchance?

oh and while im there, dear challenge friends, can someone elnlighten me as to what a Graphic Novel is? id never heard the term before seeing it on good reads. Took me a while to work out YA too but have got up to speed now!

message 1545: by El (new)

El Jon, graphic novels are like comic books, but the storylines usually have the complexity and depth that you would find in a regular novel. The stories are told in a comic book format with illustrations.

Jon Ah i see, thanks El. and congrats on breaking the 300 points mark !

I hear you--it's just one of my many neurosis (sp?) that I have a hard time quitting a book once I've started it. I've gotten pretty good at it, but this challenge has made me fall back into bad habits! Won't let it happen again though!!

Bonnie | 271 comments I agree with everyone who says life is too short to finish crappy books. And yet, for this challenge, I do (not that it hasn't been a bad habit for years). Satisfaction for completeing the challenge outweighs time wasted. Of course, I have a good grasp of the art of speed reading, which really helps.

I just finished one of the worst pieces of drivel I've read in a long time, because it was the only book with a holiday title I could get access to.

10 Points
2. Holiday Song Title: One Silent Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon

It didn't help that it was #23 in the series...but even if it was the first in the series it probably would've been just as painful.

Total Points: 195
